    PLECOPTERA OR STONEFLIES (INSECTA) OF INDIANA: DIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION STATUS OF SPECIES

    Stoneflies (Plecoptera) are indicators of water quality and have been lost in dramatic numbers from Midwest states, including Indiana. This study synthesizes over 5,000 specimen level records from museums and recent fieldwork to build a current species list, assess watershed level species richness, and calculate state level conservation assessments using NatureServe’s Conservation Rank Calculator. Results include 1,050 positive occurrence records that yielded 92 species. Among these is one recently described species, a new species not yet described, and three previously described species new to Indiana. We have also found additional locations for rare species and confirmed the presence of a few species thought to be extirpated. United States Geological Survey Hierarchical Unit Code scale 6 (HUC6) drainages with the highest species richness values were the Patoka-White (73 species), Lower Ohio-Salt (60 species), and the Wabash River (57 species). The other seven drainages produced from five to 28 species, being limited by low gradient streams due to lake plain landscapes and by stream nutrient enrichment from agriculture. Eleven species were rated as extirpated or presumed extirpated, leaving 81 extant species. Of these, 17 were rated as critically imperiled (S1), 26 imperiled (S2), 25 vulnerable (S3), while only 13 species were rated as secure (S4 & S5).     Age, Growth, and Reproductive Biology of Cownose Rays in Chesapeake Bay

    The Cownose Ray Rhinoptera bonasus is an opportunistic predator of benthic invertebrates and has had a long history of negative interactions with commercial shellfish industries. Most recently, Cownose Rays have been implicated in negatively affecting the recovery of bay scallop Argopecten irradians stocks in North Carolina and oyster restoration and commercial aquaculture efforts in Chesapeake Bay. A mitigation attempt to decrease predation on shellfish has resulted in an unregulated fishery for Cownose Rays. Cownose Ray life history suggests that they are highly susceptible to overexploitation. We determined age, growth, and size at maturity for Cownose Rays collected in Chesapeake Bay. In total, 694 rays were used for the study: 246 males ranging in size from 30.0 to 98.0cm disc width (DW) and 448 females ranging from 30.0 to 110.5cm DW. The oldest individual observed was a female (107cm DW) estimated at age 21. Our data suggested that Cownose Rays grow considerably faster during the first few years than has been previously reported, thus producing higher estimates of the growth coefficient k. The best-fit growth models (three-parameter von Bertalanffy models) estimated k-values of 0.2741 for males and 0.1931 for females. The large sample size and inclusion of many older animals (n = 119 rays over age 10) resulted in theoretical maximum size estimates that matched the observed sizes well. The median size at 50% maturity was 85-86cm DW for males and females (corresponding to ages of approximate to 6-7 for males and approximate to 7-8 for females). Fecundity in Cownose Rays was typically one embryo per mature female, with a gestation period of 11-12 months. Our study confirms that the Cownose Ray is a K-selected species with late maturity, long gestation, and low reproductive potential, indicating that it could be highly susceptible to overexploitation

    Synthesis and Cell Adhesive Properties of Linear and Cyclic RGD Functionalized Polynorbornene Thin Films

    Described herein is the efficient synthesis and evaluation of bioactive arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) functionalized polynorbornene-based materials for cell adhesion and spreading. Polynorbornenes containing either linear or cyclic RGD peptides were synthesized by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using the well-defined ruthenium initiator [(H_(2)IMes)(pyr)_(2)(Cl)_(2)Ru═CHPh]. The random copolymerization of three separate norbornene monomers allowed for the incorporation of water-soluble polyethylene glycol (PEG) moieties, RGD cell recognition motifs, and primary amines for postpolymerization cross-linking. Following polymer synthesis, thin-film hydrogels were formed by cross-linking with bis(sulfosuccinimidyl) suberate (BS^3), and the ability of these materials to support human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) adhesion and spreading was evaluated and quantified. When compared to control polymers containing either no peptide or a scrambled RDG peptide, polymers with linear or cyclic RGD at varying concentrations displayed excellent cell adhesive properties in both serum-supplemented and serum-free media. Polymers with cyclic RGD side chains maintained cell adhesion and exhibited comparable integrin binding at a 100-fold lower concentration than those carrying linear RGD peptides. The precise control of monomer incorporation enabled by ROMP allows for quantification of the impact of RGD structure and concentration on cell adhesion and spreading. The results presented here will serve to guide future efforts for the design of RGD functionalized materials with applications in surgery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine

    We present transport measurements of a tunable silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor double quantum dot device with lateral geometry. Experimentally extracted gate-to-dot capacitances show that the device is largely symmetric under the gate voltages applied. Intriguingly, these gate voltages themselves are not symmetric. Comparison with numerical simulations indicates that the applied gate voltages serve to offset an intrinsic asymmetry in the physical device. We also show a transition from a large single dot to two well isolated coupled dots, where the central gate of the device is used to controllably tune the interdot coupling.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Applied Physics Letter

    Rapid self-assembly of brush block copolymers to photonic crystals

    The reduced chain entanglement of brush polymers over their linear analogs drastically lowers the energetic barriers to reorganization. In this report, we demonstrate the rapid self-assembly of brush block copolymers to nanostructures with photonic bandgaps spanning the entire visible spectrum, from ultraviolet (UV) to near infrared (NIR). Linear relationships were observed between the peak wavelengths of reflection and polymer molecular weights. This work enables “bottom-up” fabrication of photonic crystals with application-tailored bandgaps, through synthetic control of the polymer molecular weight and the method of self-assembly. These polymers could be developed into NIR-reflective paints, to combat the “urban heat island effect” due to NIR photon thermalization
