The Heidelberg International Comprehensive School as a Peace School and UNESCO Project School
The essay provides a comprehensive account of the Heidelberg International Comprehensive School as Peace School and UNESCO Project School. First of all there is an outline of the main factors influencing the establishment of the school in 1974, these being certain approaches within the framework of education reforms, as well as the resulting Peace Education aspects. Following this there are some insights into the planning phase, which involved amongst others the Ministry of Education, The Lord Mayor, the Planning Group made up of academics, representatives of the teaching staff and parents. Examples of practice within the school are discussed; the practice is typified by its international character, e.g. links with schools in other countries, above all the high proportion of foreign children who have been integrated, through other forms of international cooperation, and finally through various topic areas pertaining to Peace Education (for instance, English lessons as a means of integrating foreign pupils, co-operation with an old peopleâs home, environmental projects, mediation incorporating active involvement by pupils). Because of the pioneering efforts of the school in the field of Peace Education and extensive public recognition, the school was granted the status of UNESCO Project School in 2001. Overall, the article gives a differentiated overview of the basic concepts of Peace Education and of opportunities for putting these into practice within a school context. In so doing the essay once again raises our awareness of the fundamental and vital significance of Peace Education for our times, despite efforts towards globalisation. (DIPF/ Orig.
An Animal-Centered Perspective on Colonial Oppression: Animal Representations and the Narrating Ox in Uwe Timmâs ââMorengaââ (1978)
As a result of its topic and its narrative style, Uwe Timmâs novel âMorengaâ (1978) marks an important step in the development of postcolonial German literature. The main theme of the book is the bloody suppression of the Herero and the Nama uprisings through the German army in South-West Africa at the beginning of the 20th century. With recourse to historical and fictional documents and by using different narrative perspectives, the text achieves a plurality of voices and thereby destabilizes a one-dimensional view on colonialism. The present article discusses the functions of the nonhuman animals appearing in âMorengaâ. It is assumed that the animal representations are an essential part of the plot and underscore the criticism of colonial rule in a narrative manner too. The novel contains several descriptions of suffering animals and links them to the harm of the Herero and the Nama in order to point out the ruthlessness of the colonists. Moreover, the book features a story-telling ox, which initiates a reflection process about possible ways of narrating colonial history. The talking ox adds a specific animal-centered perspective on colonial oppression and raises questions about emancipation, self-determination, and the agency of the nonhuman âother

8.1 Anhang 1: Autoren-Kurzform
homöopathischen Arzneien Arsenicum album, Atropa belladonna, Lachesis muta,
Symptome aus der Literatur vor 1950, 44-49% aus der Literatur nach 1950;
aktualisierten Arzneimittellehre bzw. Materia Medica in der Tiermedizin

historic roots and current applications in practice - instancing Arsenicum
album, Atropa belladonna, Lachesis muta, Strychnos nux vomica and Pulsatilla
pratensis The objective of this research was to analyse veterinary remedy
pictures (RP) of the homeopathic remedies Arsenicum album, Belladonna,
Lachesis, Nux vomica and Pulsatilla with regard to the origin of their
respective symptoms (veterinary / human) and to make a statement about the
current RP of these remedies in veterinary homeopathy. The results of the
research were analysed and discussed under different aspects. Literature was
sorted through and the chosen symptoms were searched for the existence or
absence of a human homeopathic reference. To exactly pinpoint their origin,
the symptoms which have a human homoeopathic equivalent and which have not
been observed by Genzke at a proving were referenced as human homoeopathic
derived symptoms. Symptoms observed by Genzke during a proving were referenced
as veterinary-symptoms. Symptoms without a human homoeopathic counterpart were
treated likewise. A symptom quoted by several authors was chronologically
referenced. To illustrate the historic development of veterinary remedy
pictures, symptoms were divided in groups mentioned only before 1950, after or
before and after 1950. Results of the count of the lists of symptoms (remedy
pictures) The symptoms of the veterinary remedy pictures were counted with
regard to the mentioned criteria and the results were compared. Numbers are
expressed as a percentage (rounded to the next integer) in relation to the
totality of symptoms (N=100%). Historical referencing of the symptoms The
remedy picture of Arsenicum, Belladonna, Nux vomica und Pulsatilla are
mentioned 40 to 46% of the time in literature before 1950 only, 44-49% are
mentioned in literature only after 1950; 10-11% are mentioned before 1950 and
after 1950 as well. The remedy picture of Lachesis moved the chronological
distribution of symptoms significantly towards recent symptoms. This
divergence is explained by the late introduction of Lachesis as a homoeopathic
remedy. Presence or Absence of human homeopathic references The percentage of
symptoms with a human homeopathic reference was with 80-84% much larger than
the group of symptoms without a human homeopathic reference. Influence of
Genzke to homoeopathic provings The percentage of symptoms mentioned by Genzke
is 18-34%, the percentage of Symptoms observed during a proving is 3-14%. The
percentage of Proving-Symptoms mentioned by Genzke found in literature after
1950 was 1-4%. Analysis of the veterinary remedy pictures with regard to the
origin of their symptoms The examined symptoms were divided in six groups
taking into account their origin and the period of time they were mentioned as
well. Ranks of value were assigned to the groups (Rank 1-6) providing a
ranking that made the analysis of the base of recent veterinary remedy
pictures possible. The basis of veterinary remedy pictures consists of
veterinary symptoms (proving, practical experience) of the ranks 1-3 (11-16%)
and the symptoms with human homeopathic reference of the ranks 4-5 (43-46%).
Symptoms of rank 6 (symptoms mentioned before 1950: 40-46%) have no impact on
the current remedy picture. Defining afterwards the symptoms of ranks 1-5 as
the totality of symptoms of recent remedy pictures, 17-26% were of veterinary
origin whereas 74-83% of the symptoms derived from human homeopathic origins.
Conclusion Today s selection of veterinary remedies is based on remedy
pictures mainly containing symptoms of human homoeopathic origin. Although
some symptoms of a RP are similar on humans and animals, the details, which
are critical for the remedy choice, are different. The transfer of symptoms
from human to animal (and between different animal species) is being judged
differently by varying authors. The question whether and under what
circumstances a transfer is possible, could not be answered conclusively with
the data on hand. Moreover the question seems (emotionally) linked to the
demand for remedy provings on animals. Although detailed provings on animals
based on guidelines of modern methodology are a possibility to develop
veterinary remedy pictures independently from human homoeopathy, such provings
haven t been carried out in large scale. In practice, the carrying out of this
plan would be limited by the tremendous amount of resources required.
Additionally, questions pertaining to the systematic of homoeopathy (in human
homoeopathy, too) are still unanswered. Symptoms integrated into veterinary
remedy pictures because of practical experiences of homoeopathic veterinarians
appear to be especially important in the light of the conclusions drawn. It
seems prudent to back up the homoeopathic remedy pictures through the
collection of carefully documented cases (i.e. comprehensible choice of
remedies because of the diagnosis, precise description of the course of the
disease and the appearance and disappearance of symptoms) and systematic
recording of the recognized symptoms. The greatest possible accuracy with
regard to the origin and the frequency and strength of the symptoms should be
taken. Such a procedure might lead to the creation of a constantly updated
remedy theory or materia medica in veterinary practice
A neuraminidase-negative variant of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1
Role of the Rdr1 gene family in the black spot resistance in roses
Black spot disease, caused by the hemibiotrophic ascomycete Diplocarpon rosae, is the most severe disease in field-grown roses. The Rdr1 locus, comprising nine highly similar TNL-genes, was previously characterised in roses and it is known to confer resistance to black spot. To identify the active Rdr1 gene, we analysed stable transgenic roses harbouring single members of the Rdr1 locus in a disease assay. muRdr1A was identified as the functional Rdr1 and it provides resistance to 13 different single-spore isolates of Diplocarpon rosae belonging to six different races; so far, Rdr1 is only overcome by two races. The identification and phylogenetic analysis of Rdr1-family members from the two recently available genomes of the diploid old Chinese Rosa chinensis cultivar âOld Blushâ, together with nine different rose species, resulted in a genomic organisation of the Rdr1-family in two major clusters at the distal end of chromosome 1 with different ancient origins. Genes belonging to cluster 2, like the functional muRdr1A, were subjected to a faster evolution compared to genes from cluster 1 due to known processes, such as higher rates of recombination, gene conversion, and birth and death processes. In addition, phylogenetic analysis with additional Rdr1 homologues identified in other Rosaceae, i.e. Fragaria, Malus, Prunus and Rubus, resulted in the hypothesis that the Rdr1-family moved to its current position after the split of Rubeae from other groups within Rosoideae. Transcriptomic analysis during the compatible interaction of roses and D. rosae indicated an initial PTI reaction which is either insufficient, avoided or suppressed by D. rosae. As for the incompatible interaction of roses and D. rosae caused by Rdr1, two genes (peroxidase superfamily protein and Kunitz family trypsin and protease inhibitor protein) showed significant higher expressions in the incompatible interaction compared to the compatible interaction, independently of the genetic background. In conclusion, Rdr1 can be used as the starting point for the breeding of rose varieties with a durable broad spectrum resistance against D. rosae. Furthermore, the genomic organisation and the sequence information of the Rdr1-family provided in this study is a valuable source to analyse the role of Rdr1 homologs in disease resistance in other species
An algorithm to detect sea ice leads by using AMSR-E passive microwave imagery
Leads are major sites of energy fluxes and brine releases at the air-ocean interface of sea-ice covered oceans. This study presents an algorithm to detect leads wider than 3 km in the entire Arctic Ocean. The algorithm detects 50 % of the lead area that was visible in optical MODIS satellite images. Passive microwave imagery from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer â Earth Observation System (AMSR-E) is used, allowing daily observations due to the fact that AMSR-E does not depend on daylight or cloud conditions. Using the unique signatures of thin ice in the brightness temperature ratio between the 89 GHz and 19 GHz channels, the algorithm is able to detect thin ice areas in the ice cover and is optimized to detect leads. Leads are mapped for the period from 2002 to 2011 excluding the summer months, and validated qualitatively by using MODIS, Envisat ASAR, and CryoSat-2 data. Several frequently recurring large scale lead patterns are found, especially in regions where sea ice is known to drift out of the Arctic Ocean

Field-testing of the revised, draft South African Paediatric Food-Based Dietary Guidelines among mothers/caregivers of children between the ages of 3 and 5 years in the Northern Metropole, City of Cape Town, Western Cape province, South Africa
Objective: To assess the appropriateness and understanding of the revised, draft South African Paediatric Food-Based Dietary (SA-PFBDGs) among mothers/caregivers of children between the ages of 3 and 5 years. Exposure to similar messages, barriers and enablers were also assessed.
Design: A qualitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study design was followed. Participants were purposively recruited to participate in 9 focus-group discussions (FGDs) conducted in isiXhosa, English and Afrikaans totalling 55 participants.
Setting: Formal and informal urban communities along the West Coast, in the Northern Metropole, City of Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa.
Subjects: Mothers/caregivers older than 18 years who provided informed consent.
Results: The majority of the participants mentioned previous exposure to messages similar to the revised, draft SA-PFBDGs mainly from healthcare workers, health facilities and the media. Cultural differences and taste preferences contributed to poor following of healthy eating guidelines, specifically regarding lean meats and chicken, dry beans, split peas, lentils and soya, salt, fat and sugar. With regard to dietary variety and fresh fruit and vegetables, availability and financial barriers existed. Understanding nutritional needs of children, supportive communities and education were strong enabling factors for following of the revised, draft SA-PFBDGs.
Conclusion: Overall, the guidelines were familiar and understood. However, the comprehension of some guidelines must be clarified further, specifically those pertaining to sugar, salt and fat. The design of appropriate educational materials for the revised draft SA-PFBDGs, complementing national actions, could help to minimise inconsistent messages on young-child nutrition and create a supportive environment for improved nutritional health
