VirtuWind: Virtual and programmable industrial network prototype deployed in operational wind park.

With anticipated exponential growth of connected devices, future industrial networks require an open solutions architecture facilitated by standards and a strong ecosystem. Such solutions should also deal with range of quality of service requirements imposed by industrial networks. Preserving strict quality of service is particularly challenging when services pass across domains of multiple provides. VirtuWind aims to develop and demonstrate a Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization ecosystem, based on an open, modular and secure framework to address stringent requirements of the industrial networks. A prototype of the framework for intra-domain and inter-domain scenarios will be showcased in real Wind Parks, as a representative use case of industrial networks. This paper details this vision and explains steps forward

INCA: An Agent-based Network Control Architecture

    No full text
This paper describes the design and implementation of INCA, an open architecture for the distributed management of multi-service networks and systems applications. The Intelligent Network Control Architecture is populated by stationary and mobile intelligent agents. These agents perform monitoring and control of network and systems components, thereby supporting the integrated management of networks and services. The architecture provides transaction capabilities to control transport and mobility of agents, agent prioritization, and multiple agent code transfer schemes. Managed objects used to access resources on network elements and new system functionalities can be created, distributed, and replaced dynamically. An example INCA application demonstrates that prioritized agents are necessary to support the timely execution of critical tasks. The design of our agent based network management platform is not bound to a particular programming language or computing environment;..

Intelligent network provisioning for dynamically downloadable applications in beyond 3G mobile networks

    No full text
Mobile communications beyond 3G will integrate different (but complementary) access technologies into a common platform to deliver value-added services and multimedia content in an optimum way. However, the numerous possible configurations of mobile networks complicated the dynamic deployment of mobile applications. Therefore, research is intensely seeking a service provisioning framework that is technology-independent, supports multiple wireless network technologies, and can interwork high-level service management tasks to network management operations. This paper presents an open value chain paradigm, a model for downloadable applications and a mediating platform for service provisioning in beyond 3G mobile settings. Furthermore, we introduce mechanisms that support a coupled interaction between service deployment and network configuration operations, focusing on the dynamic provisioning of QoS state to data path devices according to the requirements of dynamically downloadable mobile value-added services (VAS). © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc
