    Get PDF
The main objective of this study is the analysis of the vertical transmission of prices in the organic and conventional fresh carrot markets in the state of California, United States. It aims to empirically examine the evolution of prices and the degree of linkage between the origin and the wholesale markets. To achieve the above objective monthly prices of organic and conventional carrots, at the producer and central market level in California, were analyzed during the period of October 2007 to January 2016. Regression and cointegration methods were used in the analysis. It was concluded that both carrot markets were not vertically integrated and that commercial margins did not remain constant during the period under study. The results obtained in this study were consistent with other studies previously conducted in the US agricultural sector.Fil: Quiroga, María Victoria. Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata. Habitat heterogeneity and connectivity shape microbial communities in South American petlands

    Get PDF
Bacteria play critical roles in peatland ecosystems. However, very little is known of how habitat heterogeneity affects the structure of the bacterial communities in these ecosystems. Here, we used amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA and nifH genes to investigate phylogenetic diversity and bacterial community composition in three different sub-Antarctic peat bog aquatic habitats: Sphagnum magellanicum interstitial water, and water from vegetated and non-vegetated pools. Total and nitrogen-fixing bacterial communities from Sphagnum interstitial water differed significantly from vegetated and non-vegetated pool communities (which were colonized by the same bacterial populations), probably as a result of differences in water chemistry and biotic interactions. Total bacterial communities from pools contained typically aquatic taxa, and were more dissimilar in composition and less species rich than those from Sphagnum interstitial waters (which were enriched in taxa typically from soils), probably reflecting the reduced connectivity between the former habitats. These results show that bacterial communities in peatland water habitats are highly diverse and structured by multiple concurrent factors.Fil: Oloo, Felix. The plankton communities from peat bog pools: structure, temporal variation and environmental factors

    Get PDF
This is the first characterization of the structure and temporal variation of the plankton communities comprising the complete food web in five peat bog pools related to environmental factors over two consecutive ice-free periods in Tierra del Fuego (548S). Remarkably, picophytoplankton was composed solely of eukaryotic cells, surpassing the dominance expectations for these acidic water bodies, whereas testaceans were virtually absent, even as tychoplankters. Abundances of the different planktonic communities were slightly higher than those reported for Northern Hemisphere peat bogs and humic lakes. Mixotrophic nutrition prevailed among nano- and microphytoplankters, a strategy also common in humic lakes. The structures in spring of the planktonic communities were similar. In contrast, in late summer there were differences in the abundance and biomass of the different trophic compartments among small, shallow water bodies and large ones. These seem to be dictated by distinct pool size-driven patterns of water temperature variation. A general shift in the control of heterotrophic flagellates abundance in the pools occurred, changing from bottom-up regulation in spring to top-down control in late summer related to temperature-dependant variations in zooplankton abundance and composition. We hypothesize that changes in the trophic interactions affecting the entire food web occur over the open water period in these aquatic ecosystems, and that these are dictated by pool morphometry and related abiotic features.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y MuseoInstituto de Limnología "Dr. Raul A. This work aimed to synthesize a novel β-cyclodextrin derivative, itaconyl-β-cyclodextrin to evaluate whether albendazole inclusion complexes with the new β-cyclodextrin derivative-improved albendazole dissolution efficiency and its anthelminthic activity. The new derivative was thoroughly evaluated and characterized, and an average degree of substitution of 1.4 per cyclodextrin molecule was observed. Albendazole:itaconyl-β-cyclodextrin complexes were prepared by spray drying procedures and investigated using phase solubility diagrams, dissolution efficiency, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electronic microscopy, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Phase solubility diagrams and mass spectrometry studies showed that the inclusion complex was formed in an equimolar ratio. Stability constant values were 602 M −1 in water, and 149 M −1 in HCl 0.1 N. Nuclear magnetic resonance experiments of the inclusion complex showed correlation signals between the aromatic and propyl protons of albendazole and the itaconyl-β-cyclodextrin inner protons. The studies indicated solid structure changes of albendazole included in itaconyl-β-cyclodextrin. The maximum drug release was reached at 15 min, and the inclusion complex solubility was 88-fold higher than that of the pure drug. The in vitro anthelmintic activity assay showed that the complex was significantly more effective than pure albendazole.Fil: García, Agustina. The American bullfrog Lithobates catesbeianus has been introduced around the world, with invasive populations reported from almost all South American countries. A population of this species was introduced in the Calingasta department of San Juan province, which is an arid environment in western Argentina. This work provides information on the dietary composition of an invasive population of L. catesbeianus, and compares the degree of dietary overlap between adults and juveniles. Stomach contents of 169 bullfrogs (82 adults and 87 juveniles) were analysed. Adults consumed 40 prey taxa and Hymenoptera (Insecta) was the most numerous prey item (41.8%), followed by Araneae (13.6%) and Aeglidae (13.4%). Juveniles consumed 29 prey taxa and Hymenoptera constituted the highest percentage in prey number (77.2%). The trophic overlap niche index at the same level shows a value of 0.64 overlap in dietary community between adults and juveniles of this bullfrog. Aeglidae was volumetrically the most important trophic item (25.4%), followed by Anura (25.02%). Our results showed that cannibalism in bullfrogs is more common than the consumption of native anurans, coinciding with that reported in other populations of introduced bullfrogs. The high similarity in the diets of both size classes and the association between the size of the predator and prey suggest that the impact caused by bullfrogs throughout their ontogeny is high andprobablyhasanimpactontheirprey.Freshwatercrabsarethemainitemsinthe diet of Lithobates catesbeianus in other introduced populations and are usually the most conspicuous at our study site. The crabs in freshwater ecosystems are part of the lowest trophic level in the food chain. The major threats to the southern region’s freshwater crabs include deforestation, farming and exotic species. Lithobates catesbeianus has a generalist diet and high overlap between adults and juveniles.Fil: Quiroga, Lorena Beatriz. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. The impact of digital technologies on the bond between parents and adolescent children

    Get PDF
This project aims to investigate the impact that new information and communication technologies (ICT) and digital environments have on the bond between parents and adolescent children, in families of La Plata and Gran La Plata. In the framework of the family, social and cultural transformations of these last decades, the meanings that demarcate the generational territories also construct novelties in a different spatiality, the digital territories, where technology is inextricably interwoven with the constructive plots of the subjectivity. We intend to investigate the ways that parents and teenage children find in these new plots to link with each other, in a world in full transformation. The shift and generational relocation of the children to abandon childhood and register the novelty of the possibility of reproduction, challenges a work to symbolize the generational difference in an operation of symbolic murder of the parental figures and assumption of the identifying emblems of a lineage. Generational gap that today poses an alphabet-generational gap between natives and digital immigrants puts in check the senses of continuity / discontinuity, transmission and belonging.Facultad de Psicologí

FlowDiv: A new pipeline for analyzing flow cytometric diversity

    Get PDF
Background: Flow cytometry (FCM) is one of the most commonly used technologies for analysis of numerous biological systems at the cellular level, from cancer cells to microbial communities. Its high potential and wide applicability led to the development of various analytical protocols, which are often not interchangeable between fields of expertise. Environmental science in particular faces difficulty in adapting to non-specific protocols, mainly because of the highly heterogeneous nature of environmental samples. This variety, although it is intrinsic to environmental studies, makes it difficult to adjust analytical protocols to maintain both mathematical formalism and comprehensible biological interpretations, principally for questions that rely on the evaluation of differences between cytograms, an approach also termed cytometric diversity. Despite the availability of promising bioinformatic tools conceived for or adapted to cytometric diversity, most of them still cannot deal with common technical issues such as the integration of differently acquired datasets, the optimal number of bins, and the effective correlation of bins to previously known cytometric populations. Results: To address these and other questions, we have developed flowDiv, an R language pipeline for analysis of environmental flow cytometry data. Here, we present the rationale for flowDiv and apply the method to a real dataset from 31 freshwater lakes in Patagonia, Argentina, to reveal significant aspects of their cytometric diversities. Conclusions: flowDiv provides a rather intuitive way of proceeding with FCM analysis, as it combines formal mathematical solutions and biological rationales in an intuitive framework specifically designed to explore cytometric diversity.Fil: Wanderley, Bruno M.
