Caturra.Ecuador produces Arabica and Robusta coffee varieties, adaptable to different
agroecosystems. Fruit set deficiency is a problem that affects coffee yield, with boron (B)
being an essential micronutrient for fruit development and fruit set. In this context, it is
necessary to identify a concentration of B that maximizes productivity and profitability in
Guachapala, an area that presents conditions for the development of Coffea arabica, where
agriculture is one of the main economic sources. The objective was to evaluate the foliar
application of boron in different concentrations on the fruit set of Coffea arabica L cv. Caturra
at the El Romeral experimental farm of the University of Cuenca. A randomized complete
block design with 8 treatments and 4 repetitions was used. The variables evaluated were the
fruit set at 30, 60 and 90 days and the weight of the fresh fruit at 120 days post-application of
the treatments, in addition, the boron absorption capacity in the leaves was determined. The
results did not show statistically significant differences, however, the treatment T6 (60 ppm)
and T4 (40 ppm) of boric acid (H3BO3
) showed a certain tendency to improve the fruit set
percentage and weight respectively. Regarding boron absorption, an increasing trend was
observed according to boron concentrations. The investigation concluded that the
application of different concentrations could improve fruit set and weight in Coffea arabica cv.

Recent advances in thermosensitive hydrogels as drug delivery systems: A review
Polymers that exhibit physicochemical responses to stimuli have been widely explored as potential drug delivery systems. Different kind of stimuli investigated to date includes, for example, chemical substances and changes in temperature, pH and electric fields. Polymers that exhibit dramatic changes in their behavior in an aqueous solution at temperatures close to the body temperature are of particular interest in drug delivery and biomedical applications. Thermosensitive polymers have a wide range of applications, specially, the thermosensitive triblock copolymers because they exhibit unique aqueous solution properties, biodegradability and biocompatibility. These copolymers can be designed to be used as potential drug delivery systems for therapeutic protein drugs or poorly water soluble drugs. This article reviews the applications of polymer solutions with the ability to form in situ implants under temperature changes, in areas of interest to biomedical, pharmacist and engineer scientists. Recent advantages on thermosensitive and biodegradable polymers are discussed to give a wide overview of the available strategies to modify them in order to make them suitable for potential applications in health products.Fil: Bermudez, Jose Maria. Hybrid Formulations of Liposomes and Bioadhesive Polymers Improve the Hypotensive Effect of the Melatonin Analogue 5-MCA-NAT in Rabbit Eyes
For the treatment of chronic ocular diseases such as glaucoma, continuous instillations of eye drops are needed. However, frequent administrations of hypotensive topical formulations can produce adverse ocular surface effects due to the active substance or other components of the formulation, such as preservatives or other excipients. Thus the development of unpreserved formulations that are well tolerated after frequent instillations is an important challenge to improve ophthalmic chronic topical therapies. Furthermore, several components can improve the properties of the formulation in terms of efficacy. In order to achieve the mentioned objectives, we have developed formulations of liposomes (150–200 nm) containing components similar to those in the tear film and loaded with the hypotensive melatonin analog 5-methoxycarbonylamino-N-acetyltryptamine (5-MCA-NAT, 100 µM). These formulations were combined with mucoadhesive (sodium hyaluronate or carboxymethylcellulose) or amphiphilic block thermosensitive (poloxamer) polymers to prolong the hypotensive efficacy of the drug. In rabbit eyes, the decrease of intraocular pressure with 5-MCA-NAT-loaded liposomes that were dispersed with 0.2% sodium hyaluronate, 39.1±2.2%, was remarkably higher compared to other liposomes formulated without or with other bioadhesive polymers, and the effect lasted more than 8 hours. According to the results obtained in the present work, these technological strategies could provide an improved modality for delivering therapeutic agents in patients with glaucoma.Fil: Quinteros, Daniela Alejandra. Synergistic effect of acetazolamide-(2-hydroxy)propyl β-cyclodextrin in timolol liposomes for decreasing and prolonging intraocular pressure levels
The purpose of this study was to design, for the first time, a co-loaded liposomal formulation (CLL) for treatment of glaucoma including timolol maleate (TM) in the lipid bilayer and acetazolamide (Acz)-(2-hydroxy)propyl β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) complexes (AczHP) solubilized in the aqueous core of liposomes. Formulations with TM (TM-L) and AczHP (AczHP-L), separately, were also prepared and characterized. A preliminary study comprising the Acz/HPβCD complexes and their interaction with cholesterol (a component of the lipid bilayer) was realized. Then, a screening study on formulation factors affecting the quality of the product was carried out following the design of the experiment methodology. In addition, in vitro release and permeation studies and in vivo lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) studies were performed. The results of the inclusion com-plexation behavior, characterization, and binding ability of Acz with HPβCD showed that HPβCD could enhance the water solubility of Acz despite the weak binding ability of the complex. Ch disturbed the stability and solubility parameters of Acz due to the fact of its competence by CD; thus, Chems (steroid derivative) was selected for further liposome formulation studies. The optimization of the lipid bilayer composition (DDAB, 0.0173 mmol and no double loading) and the extrusion as methods to reduce vesicle size were crucial for improving the physico-chemical properties and encapsulation efficiency of both drugs. In vitro release and permeation studies demonstrated that the CLL formulation showed improvement in in vitro drug release and permeation compared to the liposomal formulations with a single drug (TM-L and AczHP-L) and the standard solutions (TM-S and AczHP-S). CLL showed high efficacy in reducing and prolonging IOP, suggesting that the synergistic effect of TM and Acz on aqueous humor retention and the presence of this cyclodextrin and liposomes as permeation enhancers are responsible for the success of this strategy of co-loading for glaucoma therapy.Junta de Andalucía 2017/CTS214Universidad de Sevilla PPI546/202
