Streamlining the Acquisition Process: Systems Analysis for Improving Army Acquisition Corps Officer Management
The Army Acquisition Officer lacks proficient experience needed to fill key leadership positions within the Acquisition Corps. The active duty Army officer is considered for the Acquisition Corps functional area between their 5th and 9th years of service as an officer – after completing initial career milestones. The new Acquisition Corps officer is the rank of senior Captain or Major when he arrives to his first acquisition assignment with a proficiency level of novice (in acquisition). The Army officer may be advanced in his primary career branch, but his level decreases when he is assigned into the Acquisition Corps functional area. The civilian grade equivalent to the officer is a GS-12 or GS-13 whose proficiency level is advanced in his career field. The purpose of this study is to use a systems analysis approach to decompose the current acquisition officer professional development system, in order to study how well the current active duty officer flow works and how well it interacts or influences an acquisition officer\u27s professional development; and to propose a potential solution to assist in the management of Army acquisition officers, so they gain proficiency through not only education and training, but also the hands-on experience that is needed to fill key leadership positions in the Army Acquisition Corps. An increased proficiency and proven successful track record in the acquisition workforce is the basis to positively affect acquisition streamlining processes within the Department of Defense by making good decisions through quality experience

Psoriasis Vulgaris Successfully Treated with Goeckerman Treatment at Home: A Patient and Physician's Experience.
Goeckerman therapy is a highly effective treatment regimen for moderate-to-severe psoriasis. It involves regular exposure to ultraviolet B radiation and the application of crude coal tar. To our knowledge, only three centers in the USA currently offer a formal Goeckerman therapy treatment program; thus, access to this therapy is geographically limited. In this article, a motivated patient discusses his experience with generalized plaque psoriasis. This patient, while living in a Goeckerman-inaccessible area, deferred treatment with biologics and outpatient phototherapy to develop a modified Goeckerman regimen for at-home use. This home regimen, which did not involve the use of prescription-strength medications, resulted in full clearance of his psoriasis. We also discuss the patient's case from the perspective of a dermatology treatment team that has reviewed his experience
Congestion Tax in New York City: Progressive or Regressive Tax?
Thesis advisor: Richard TreschMy thesis topic is an analysis of the effects that a congestion tax in mid-town Manhattan would have on drivers who normally drive there. A congestion charge was proposed in 2008 in an attempt to lessen traffic in Manhattan below 80th street, but it was struck down in the New York State Assembly. My thesis will look into the data the Assembly used to make its decision to reject the charge. I will then use this and other data to calculate my own elasticity and find hypothetical effects of a congestion tax in the area on drivers. Commonality of ground systems in launch operations
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2008.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 124-125).NASA is examining the utility of requiring a certain degree of commonality in both flight and ground systems in the Constellation Program. While the benefits of commonality seem obvious in terms of minimizing upfront development and long-term operations and maintenance costs, success in real, large-scale engineering systems used to support launch operations is relatively unknown. A broad literature review conducted for this paper did not yield a single paper specifically addressing the application of commonality for ground systems at any launch site in the United States or abroad. This paper provides a broad overview of the ground systems, captures historical and current application of commonality at the launch site, and offers suggestions for additional research to further develop commonality approaches.by Shawn M. Course Code: ENR/AEDE 4567The focus of our project is to reduce energy consumption community-wide by 20% over the next five years within the residential and commercial sectors. This 20% reduction is a goal within Green Memo III, set forth by the City of Columbus and Mayor Michael B. Coleman. Focusing on five objectives, we conducted research, gathered data on best practices from cities that have been making strides in this area, reached out to key energy providers, and provided a cost-benefit analysis on the financial feasibility of our goals. We hope to advise Columbus decision makers on how to effectively target homes and commercial buildings in order to market energy efficiency programs. Concurrent Primary Cardiac Tumors in a High-Risk Patient Presenting With Tamponade.
Primary cardiac tumors are rare, particularly in the elderly population. The patient described in this report presented with symptoms of dyspnea on exertion, leg swelling, and weight gain and was found to have two histologically distinct cardiac masses: atrial myxoma with concurrent aortic fibroelastoma. Given her history of cirrhosis and end-stage renal disease, the patient was a poor surgical candidate but opted for excision of both masses. The patient eventually succumbed to her cirrhosis six weeks after presentation. In this report, we advocate for further research into medical management for the unique presentation of concurrent primary cardiac tumors in high-operative-risk patients, particularly those whose symptoms are mostly due to tamponade
Utilization of bedside ultrasound in the diagnosis and management of massive pulmonary embolism: a case report
AbstractThe prompt diagnosis and treatment of massive pulmonary embolism is a well-known challenge for physicians. We report a case of a 61-year-old hemodynamically unstable man who presented to the emergency department with complaints of acute dyspnea. After performing a focused history and physical, we used bedside ultrasound to diagnose significant right heart strain, which suggested massive bilateral pulmonary embolisms. This diagnosis was further supported by the visualization of deep venous thrombosis in the left lower extremity. The patient was treated with IV tissue plasminogen activator in the emergency department and survived to discharge in his usual state of health
