    Genomic co-processor for long read assembly

    Genomics data is transforming medicine and our understanding of life in fundamental ways; however, it is far outpacing Moore's Law. Third-generation sequencing technologies produce 100X longer reads than second generation technologies and reveal a much broader mutation spectrum of disease and evolution. However, these technologies incur prohibitively high computational costs. In order to enable the vast potential of exponentially growing genomics data, domain specific acceleration provides one of the few remaining approaches to continue to scale compute performance and efficiency, since general-purpose architectures are struggling to handle the huge amount of data needed for genome alignment. The aim of this project is to implement a genomic-coprocessor targeting HPC FPGAs starting from the Darwin FPGA co-processor. In this scenario, the final objective is the simulation and implementation of the algorithms described by Darwin using Alveo boards, exploiting High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) to increase its performance

    La pesca-turismo es un concepto nuevo de diversificación turística que consiste en la experiencia por parte del turista de embarcarse en un barco pesquero y vivir de cerca la experiencia de pescar. Este trabajo se aproxima al concepto analizando lo que se consideran sus antecedentes, el agroturismo y su regulación legal, aplicándolos a los recursos marítimos de los que presume nuestro país. Así mismo, se describe el proceso administrativo y legal por el cual se ha considerado una actividad legal en España, y de la misma forma, en las Comunidades Autónomas que ya la contemplan. De manera especial, se menciona Andalucía que aún no contempla regulación legal alguna y se propone una concienciación social para conocer y valorar mejor los recursos marítimos que posee.―Fishing Tourism‖ is a new concept of touristic diversification related to the experience of going on board of a fishing boat and live the experience of fishing. This Project analyzes the concept and its connection to another new type of tourism called ―agrotourism‖ and its normative. It is part of a sustainable type of tourism and can be included into the modality of ―maritime tourism‖.     Effect of fatigue strength exercise on anterior thigh skin temperature rewarming after cold stress test

    Although dynamic thermography skin temperature assessment has been used in medical field, scientific evidence in sports is scarce. The aim of the study was to assess changes in anterior thigh skin temperature in response to a cold stress test after a strength exercise fatiguing protocol. Ten physically active adults performed a familiarization session and two strength exercise sessions, one with dominant and the other with non-dominant lower limb. Participants performed bouts of 10 concentric and eccentric contractions of leg extensions in an isokinetic device until reaching around 30% of force loss. Infrared thermographic images were taken at baseline conditions and after the fatigue level from both thighs after being cooled using a cryotherapy system. ROIs included vastus medialis, rectus femoris, adductor and vastus lateralis. Skin temperature rewarming was assessed during 180s after the cooling process obtaining the coefficients of the following equation: ΔSkin temperature = β0 + β1 * ln(T), being β0 and β1 the constant and slope coefficients, respectively, T the time elapsed following the cold stress in seconds, and ΔSkin temperature the difference between the skin temperature at T respect and the pre-cooling moment. Lower β0 and higher β1 were found for vastus lateralis and rectus femoris in the intervention lower limb compared with baseline conditions (p  0.6). Adductor only showed differences in β0 (p = 0.01 and ES = 0.92). The regressions models obtained showed that β0 and β1 had a direct relationship with age and muscle mass, but an inverse relationship with the number of series performed until 30% of fatigue (R2 = 0.8). In conclusion, fatigue strength exercise results in a lower skin temperature and a faster thermal increase after a cold stress test

    Assessment of a mattress with phase change materials using a thermal and perception test

    Mattresses composed by phase change materials (PCMs) may improve the thermoregulation of the human body. The aim of the study was to analyze the thermoregulatory efficiency of a PCMs and a conventional mattresses via the evaluation of the skin temperature, thermal comfort and thermal perception. Twenty participants lay on a PCMs and a conventional mattress for 20 minutes in each mattress on the same day. Skin temperature of the back of the participants and temperature of the sheet of the mattresses were measured before and immediately after lying on each mattress. Thermal comfort and thermal perception were also reported during the last minute of the lying test. The PCMs mattress resulted in a lower increase in skin temperature (0.3 - 1.0°C, p=0.002 and ES=1.4) and a greater increase of the sheet temperature (0.2 - 1.6°C, p=0.02 and ES=0.8). No differences in thermal comfort and thermal perception were observed between mattresses (p>0.05 and ES<0.8). The analysis of the superficial temperature (skin, sheet) was an adequate tool to identify differences in the thermoregulatory efficiency of different mattresses. The use of PCMs in mattresses improved the heat dissipation of the human body during lying in a proportion between 2.7% and 25.6%. However, the thermoregulatory differences were not big enough to alter the thermal comfort and thermal perception of the participants after 20 minutes of test.SIThe contribution of two of the authors were funded with doctoral fellowships (FPU) from the Spanish Ministry of Education.     Relationship between foot eversion and thermographic foot skin temperature after running

    [EN] The main instruments to assess foot eversion have some limitations (especially for field applications), and therefore it is necessary to explore new methods. The objective was to determine the relationship between foot eversion and skin temperature asymmetry of the foot sole (difference between medial and lateral side), using infrared thermography. Twenty-two runners performed a running test lasting 30 min. Skin temperature of the feet soles was measured by infrared thermography before and after running. Foot eversion during running was measured by kinematic analysis. Immediately after running, weak negative correlations were observed between thermal symmetry of the rearfoot and eversion at contact time, and between thermal symmetry of the entire plantar surface of the foot and maximum eversion during stance phase (r = −0.3 and p = 0.04 in both cases). Regarding temperature variations, weak correlations were also observed (r = 0.4 and p < 0.05). The weak correlations observed in this study suggest that skin temperature is not related to foot eversion.     International journalism in Brazil: a comparative study between the worlds’coverage of Folha de S. Paulo and O Globo

    Este trabalho tem por objetivo identificar como é feita a cobertura da editoria “mundo” de dois portais de notícia brasileiros – O Globo e Folha de S. Paulo. Nos interessa compreender se os países da América Latina são representados nessas editorias ou se o espaço é destinado para nações como Estados Unidos e alguns países europeus. A partir da literatura, partimos de duas hipóteses: que os EUA são o país que mais aparece na cobertura dos dois portais; e que países latino-americanos aparecem pouco, mesmo em se tratando da cobertura de portais brasileiros, que fazem parte da América Latina. Para atingir os objetivos propostos, empregamos a análise de conteúdo quantitativa, que auxiliou no estudo comparativo e também na identificação de padrões e diferenças contidas na cobertura dos portais. O período de análise compreendeu os meses de abril a julho de 2018, e os resultados indicam que os portais apresentam perfis semelhantes de cobertura noticiosa. Entretanto, países da América Latina estão presentes nos dois veículos, embora de modo muito diferente das nações consideradas desenvolvidas.Palavras-chave: Portais noticiosos. Jornalismo internacional. América Latina. Análise comparativa.This paper aims to identify how the coverage of the World section of two Brazilian news portals (O Globo and Folha de S. Paulo) is accomplished. We seek to comprehend in which range Latin America countries are presented within the World section of the researched portal, examining also the rate of appearance of the United States as well as European countries. The literature review enables to advance two hypothesis: 1) The United States is the country with the highest rate of appearance in both portals’ coverage; 2) Latin American countries have a low rate of appearance, even though both portals being Brazilian. In order to test this hypothesis, we used quantitative content analysis, which allows us to identify patterns and differences in the coverage of portals permitting comparisons. The data was collected since 2018 April until July and the results indicated similarities in the analyzed portals, with both coverages presenting Latin America countries, although showing significant differences in comparison to the so-called developed nations.Keywords: News portals.     Do Docking Sites Persist Upon Fluorination? The Diadamantyl Ether-Aromatics Challenge for Rotational Spectroscopy and Theory

    Fluorinated derivatives of biological molecules have proven to be highly efficient at modifying the biological activity of a given protein through changes in the stability and the kind of docking interactions. These interactions can be hindered or facilitated based on the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character of a particular protein region. Diadamantyl ether (C20 H30 O) possesses both kinds of docking sites, serving as a good template to model these important contacts with aromatic fluorinated counterparts. In this work, an experimental study on the structures of several complexes between diadamantyl ether and benzene as well as a series of fluorinated benzenes is reported to analyze the effect of H→F substitution on the interaction and structure of the resulting molecular clusters using rotational spectroscopy. All experimentally observed complexes are largely dominated by London dispersion interactions with the hydrogen-terminated surface areas of diadamantyl ether. Already single substitution of one hydrogen atom with fluorine changes the preferred docking site of the complexes. However, the overall contributions of the different intermolecular interactions are similar for the different complexes, contrary to previous studies focusing on the difference in interactions using fluorinated and non-fluorinated molecules

    Relationship between students' perception of a rubric for oral presentations and their academic characteristics

    The use of rubrics in the evaluation of oral presentations has been associated with several benefits for students. However, it is unknown whether students with better academic marks and greater self‐regulation find the use of rubrics more useful or not. This paper aims to assess the relationship between how students perceive the use of a rubric and their academic characteristics, and to analyze the congruence between the professor's and students' evaluations when using the rubric. Eighty‐five students studying for a Degree in Sport Sciences participated in this study. A rubric for oral presentations was used to assess the students' performance. The students then filled out a questionnaire about their perception of the validity of the rubric, an assessment of academic performance, and a self‐regulation questionnaire. Inverse correlations were observed between the academic record and two items of the rubric validity perception (r 0.22). There was very good congruence between the professor's and students' marks when using the rubric (ICC = 0.78). The results suggest that the rubric used is a good instrument to ensure fair and consistent evaluations, despite possible differences between evaluators

    Effects of different hydration supports on stride kinematics, comfort, and impact accelerations during running

    Background: Different supports for hydration can influence total body mass and affect running biomechanics. Research question: Do different hydration supports affect the perceived exertion and comfort, stride kinematics, and impact accelerations during running?. Methods: This was a crossover study design. Thirteen trail runners completed a treadmill running test divided into four different durations and randomized hydration supports conditions, lasting 8 min each at moderate intensity: A) waist bag (0.84 kg); B) medium load backpack (0.84 kg); C) full load backpack (3.40 kg); and D) a control condition without water support. Impact accelerations were measured for 30 s in 4, 6, and 8 min. The rate of perceived exertion and heart rate were registered on minutes 4 and 8. At the last minute of each condition, comfort perception was registered. Results and significance: No condition affected the stride kinematics. Full load backpack condition reduced head acceleration peak (−0.21 g; p = 0.04; ES=0.4) and head acceleration magnitude (−0.23 g; p = 0.03; ES=0.4), and increased shock attenuation (3.08 g; p = 0.04; ES=0.3). It also elicited higher perceived exertion (p 0.8) being considered heavier (p 1.1). The waist bag condition was more comfortable in terms of noise (p = 0.006; ES=1.3) and humidity/heat (p = 0.001; ES=0.8). The waist bag was the most comfortable support. On the other hand, the full backpack elicited lower comfort and was the only generating compensatory adjustments. These results may help to improve design of full load backpack aiming at comfort for runners
