Environmental protection requirements for scout/shuttle auxiliary stages
The requirements for enabling the Scout upper stages to endure the expected temperature, mechanical shock, acoustical and mechanical vibration environments during a specified shuttle mission were determined. The study consisted of: determining a shuttle mission trajectory for a 545 kilogram (1200 pound) Scout payload; compilation of shuttle environmental conditions; determining of Scout upper stages environments in shuttle missions; compilation of Scout upper stages environmental qualification criteria and comparison to shuttle mission expected environments; and recommendations for enabling Scout upper stages to endure the exptected shuttle mission environments
The human hand and foot in evolution and art : the effects of wearing footwear
The structures of the human hands and feet are shaped by evolution and its effects on the brain, skeleton and other structures, and on behavior. We used measurements obtained of hands and feet from living humans in Europe, the Americas (South and North) and Australia and images of hands and feet in cave art, paintings, and photographs obtained from the Web including some from Africa. We used the ratios of the third finger/width of hand and second toe/width of foot. We hypothesized that hand ratios would not have changed over millennia whereas, because of the use of footwear and mechanical locomotion, the ratios obtained from feet could have changed significantly. Here we report that statistical analyses and modeling confirmed our initial hypothesi
Temperature dependence of the interlayer magnetoresistance of quasi-one-dimensional Fermi liquids at the magic angles
The interlayer magnetoresistance of a quasi-one-dimensional Fermi liquid is
considered for the case of a magnetic field that is rotated within the plane
perpendicular to the most-conducting direction. Within semi-classical transport
theory dips in the magnetoresistance occur at integer amgic angles only when
the electronic dispersion parallel to the chains is nonlinear. If the field
direction is fixed at one of the magic angles and the temperature is varied the
resulting variation of the scattering rate can lead to a non-monotonic
variation of the interlayer magnetoresistance with temperature. Although the
model considered here gives a good description of some of the properties of the
Bechgaard salts, (TMTSF)2PF6 for pressures less than 8kbar and (TMTSF)2ClO4 it
gives a poor description of their properties when the field is parallel to the
layers and of the intralayer transport.Comment: 10pages, RevTeX + epsf, 3 figure

Field-induced spin density wave in (TMTSF)NO
Interlayer magnetoresistance of the Bechgaard salt (TMTSF)NO is
investigated up to 50 teslas under pressures of a few kilobars. This compound,
the Fermi surface of which is quasi two-dimensional at low temperature, is a
semi metal under pressure. Nevertheless, a field-induced spin density wave is
evidenced at 8.5 kbar above 20 T. This state is characterized by a
drastically different spectrum of the quantum oscillations compared to the low
pressure spin density wave state.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev. B 71 (2005
Soil quality has become an important issue in soil science. Considerable attempts have been made to define soil quality, but a general concept has not yet been accepted by the scientific community. The selection of quantitative indices for soil quality is extremely difficult, and a considerable number of chemical, physical, and biochemical properties have been suggested as potential indicators of soil quality. Because soil organic matter (SOM) can be associated with different soil chemical, physical and biological processes, it has been widely considered as one of the best soil quality indicator. Land use can significantly influence dynamics of organic carbon and N, P, and S cycle. However, changes in total soil organic carbon (SOC) contents in response to land use may be difficult to detect because of the natural soil variability. In the short to medium term, biological properties and readily decomposable fractions of SOC, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), are much more sensitive to soil management than is SOM as a whole, and can be used as a key indicator of soil natural functions. Despite the fact that labile C accounts for a small portion of the total organic matter in the soils, DOC is the most mobile and important C-source for microorganisms, and can easily reflect the effects of land use on soil quality. Although several methods are used to characterize DOC, the factors influencing mineralization and bioavailability of elements associated with organic matter (N, P, and S) remains unclear. Future research should focus on the processes that govern DOC and nutrient dynamics and how they affect soil quality
Orbital quantization in the high magnetic field state of a charge-density-wave system
A superposition of the Pauli and orbital coupling of a high magnetic field to
charge carriers in a charge-density-wave (CDW) system is proposed to give rise
to transitions between subphases with quantized values of the CDW wavevector.
By contrast to the purely orbital field-induced density-wave effects which
require a strongly imperfect nesting of the Fermi surface, the new transitions
can occur even if the Fermi surface is well nested at zero field. We suggest
that such transitions are observed in the organic metal
-(BEDT-TTF)KHg(SCN) under a strongly tilted magnetic field.Comment: 14 pages including 4 figure
Magnetothemopower study of quasi two-dimensional organic conductor -(BEDT-TTF)KHg(SCN)
We have used a low-frequency magneto-thermopower (MTEP) method to probe the
high magnetic field ground state behavior of
-(BEDT-TTF)KHg(SCN) along all three principal crystallographic
axes at low temperatures. The thermopower tensor coefficients (
and ) have been measured to 30 T, beyond the anomalous low temperature,
field-induced transition at 22.5 T. We find a significant anisotropy in the
MTEP signal, and also observe large quantum oscillations associated with the de
Haas - van Alphen effect. The anisotropy indicates that the ground state
properties are clearly driven by mechanisms that occur along specific
directions for the in-plane electronic structure. Both transverse and
longitudinal magnetothermopower show asymptotic behavior in field, which can be
explained in terms of magnetic breakdown of compensated closed orbits.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
Coherent vs incoherent interlayer transport in layered metals
The magnetic-field, temperature, and angular dependence of the interlayer
magnetoresistance of two different quasi-two-dimensional (2D) organic
superconductors is reported. For -(BEDT-TTF)I we find a
well-resolved peak in the angle-dependent magnetoresistance at (field parallel to the layers). This clear-cut proof for the coherent
nature of the interlayer transport is absent for
''-(BEDT-TTF)SFCHCFSO. This and the non-metallic
behavior of the magnetoresistance suggest an incoherent quasiparticle motion
for the latter 2D metal.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Phys. Rev. B, in pres
