    Imaging Features of Pediatric Pentastomiasis Infection: a Case Report

    We report here a case of pentastomiasis infection in a 3-year-old girl who had high fever, abdominal pain, abdominal tension and anemia. Ultrasound scanning of the abdomen revealed disseminated hyperechoic nodules in the liver and a small amount of ascites. Abdominal MRI showed marked hepatomegaly with disseminated miliary nodules of high signal intensity throughout the hepatic parenchyma on T2-weighted images; retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy and disseminated miliary nodules on the peritoneum were also noted. Chest CT showed scattered small hyperdense nodules on both sides of the lungs. The laparoscopy demonstrated diffuse white nodules on the liver surface and the peritoneum. After the small intestinal wall and peritoneal biopsy, histological examination revealed parenchymal tubercles containing several larvae of pentastomids and a large amount of inflammatory cell infiltration around them. The pathological diagnosis was parasitic granuloma from pentastomiasis infection

    Iridescent Daytime Radiative Cooling with No Absorption Peaks in the Visible Range

    Coatings for passive radiative cooling applications must be highly reflected in the solar spectrum, and thus can hardly support any coloration without losing their functionality. In this work, a colorful daytime radiative cooling surface based on structural coloration is reported. A designed radiative cooler with a bioinspired array of truncated SiO2 microcones is manufactured via a self-assembly method and reactive ion etching. Complemented with a silver reflector, the radiative cooler exhibits broadband iridescent coloration due to the scattering induced by the truncated microcone array while maintaining an average reflectance of 95% in the solar spectrum and a high thermal emissivity (ε) of 0.95, owing to the reduced impedance mismatch provided by the patterned surface at infrared wavelengths, reaching an estimated cooling power of ≈143 W m-2 at an ambient temperature of 25 Â°C and a measured average temperature drop of 7.1 Â°C under direct sunlight. This strong cooling performance is attributed to its bioinspired surface pattern, which promotes both the aesthetics and cooling capacity of the daytime radiative cooler

    Evolution of East Asias Arcto-Tertiary relict Euptelea (Eupteleaceae) shaped by Late Neogene vicariance and Quaternary climate change

    Background: The evolutionary origin and historical demography of extant Arcto-Tertiary forest species in East Asia is still poorly understood. Here, we reconstructed the evolutionary and population demographic history of the two extant Euptelea species in China (E. pleiosperma) and Japan (E. polyandra). Chloroplast/nuclear DNA sequences and microsatellite loci were obtained from 36 Euptelea populations to explore molecular structure and diversity in relation to past and present distributions based on ecological niche modelling (ENM). Time-calibrated phylogenetic/phylogeographic inferences and niche-identity tests were used to infer the historical process of lineage formation. Results: Euptelea pleiosperma diverged from E. polyandra around the Late Miocene and experienced significant ecological differentiation. A near-simultaneous diversification of six phylogroups occurred during the mid-to-late Pliocene, in response to the abrupt uplift of the eastern Tibetan Plateau and an increasingly cooler and drier climate. Populations of E. pleiosperma seem to have been mostly stationary through the last glacial cycles, while those of E. polyandra reflect more recent climate-induced cycles of range contraction and expansion. Conclusions: Our results illustrate how Late Neogene climatic/tectonic changes promoted speciation and lineage diversification in East Asias Tertiary relict flora. They also demonstrate for the first time a greater variation in such species responses to glacial cycles in Japan when compared to congeners in China.(VLID)193287

    Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation Improves the Postoperative Quality of Recovery and Analgesia after Gynecological Laparoscopic Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    Background. We conducted this prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the effects of transcutaneous electric acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on the quality of recovery (QoR) and postoperative analgesia after gynecological laparoscopic surgery. Methods. 74 American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status (ASA) I or II patients undergoing gynecological laparoscopic surgery were randomly allocated to TEAS or control groups. The primary outcome was the quality of recovery, which was assessed on the day before surgery and 24 h after surgery using a 40-item questionnaire. Secondary outcomes included postoperative pain scores, the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), duration of postanesthesia care unit (PACU) stay, and patient’s satisfaction. Results. The TEAS group had higher QoR scores than control group upon 24 h after surgery (177 versus 165; P<0.001). Compared with the control group, postoperative pain scores and the cumulative number of opioids administered were lower in the TEAS group patients (P=0.04). TEAS reduced the incidence of PONV and dizziness, as well as duration of PACU stay. Simultaneously, the patient’s satisfaction scores were higher in the TEAS group (P=0.002). Conclusion. Preoperative TEAS enhances QoR, improves postoperative analgesia and patient’s satisfaction, alleviates postoperative side effects, and accelerates discharge after general anesthesia for gynecological laparoscopic surgery

    Action Real-Time Strategy Gaming Experience Related to Increased Attentional Resources: An Attentional Blink Study

    Action real-time strategy gaming (ARSG) is a cognitively demanding task which requires attention, sensorimotor skills, team cooperation, and strategy-making abilities. A recent study found that ARSG experts had superior visual selective attention (VSA) for detecting the location of a moving object that could appear in one of 24 different peripheral locations (Qiu et al., 2018), suggesting that ARSG experience is related to improvements in the spatial component of VSA. However, the influence of ARSG experience on the temporal component of VSA—the detection of an item among a sequence of items presented consecutively and quickly at a single location—still remains understudied. Using behavioral and electrophysiological measures, this study examined whether ARSG experts had superior temporal VSA performance compared to non-experts in an attentional blink (AB) task, which is typically used to examine temporal VSA. The results showed that the experts outperformed the non-experts in their detection rates of targets. Furthermore, compared to the non-experts, the experts had faster information processing as indicated by earlier P3 peak latencies in an AB period, more attentional resources distributed to targets as indicated by stronger P3 amplitudes, and a more flexible deployment of attentional resources. These findings suggest that experts were less prone to the AB effect. Thus, long-term ARSG experience is related to improvements in temporal VSA. The current findings support the benefit of video gaming experience on the development of VSA

    Assessment of chemotherapy response in non-Hodgkin lymphoma involving the neck utilizing diffusion kurtosis imaging: a preliminary study

    PURPOSE:We aimed to examine the utility of non-Gaussian diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) for assessment of chemotherapy response in patients with cervical (neck) non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).METHODS:Patients with cervical NHL underwent 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging with maximal b value of 2000 s/mm2 at baseline and seven days after chemotherapy onset. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value and diffusion kurtosis imaging maps for diffusion coefficient (D) and kurtosis (K) were calculated. Based on clinical examination, laboratory screening, and PET/CTs, patients were classified as responders or nonresponders.RESULTS:Twenty-six patients were enrolled. Among them, 24 patients were classified as responders and two as nonresponders. For responders, mean follow-up ADC and D increased significantly compared with baseline (ADC: 0.92±0.11 ×10-3 mm2/s vs. 0.68±0.11 ×10-3 mm2/s; D: 1.47±0.32 ×10-3 mm2/s vs. 0.98±0.21 ×10-3 mm2/s, P < 0.001 for both). Mean follow-up K decreased significantly compared with baseline (1.14±0.10 vs. 1.47±0.19, P < 0.001) for responders. Dratio showed significant positive correlation and high agreement with ADCratio (r = 0.776, P < 0.001). Likewise, Kratio showed significant negative correlation and high agreement with ADCratio (r = -0.658, P < 0.001).CONCLUSION:The new DKI model may serve as a new biomarker for the evaluation of early chemotherapy response in NHL

    A taurine-functionalized 3D graphene-based foam for electrochemical determination of hydrogen peroxide

    Abstract(#br)We present a synthesis approach of taurine-functionalized graphene foam (a-NSGF) using hydrothermal reduction, freeze-drying and high temperature annealing. The higher temperature in annealing allowed the N/S atoms of taurine enter into the graphene lattice, which improves its electrocatalytic activity greatly. The a-NSGF consisting of taurine that modified into 3D layers of graphene and endow is of the rapid sensitive to hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). The electrode using a-NSGF modification reveals highly sensitive and stable towards the concentration change of H 2 O 2 due to the stable 3D structure and good electrical conductivity of a-NSGF. A linear correlation between H 2 O 2 concentration and the electrochemical signal is found to be in a range from 1.5 to 300 μM and the correlation coefficient is R 2 = 0.999. The modified electrode has been applied in the determination of H 2 O 2 in rain samples and the results have been compared with the China National Standard Method. The recoveries range from 94.6% to 106.7%. These results show that the proposed sensor is promising for the development of novel electrochemical sensing for H 2 O 2 determination
