    The Effect of Zhongyong Thinking on Remote Association Thinking: An EEG Study

    The Doctrine of the Mean (zhongyong) introduced by Confucianism is not only an aspect of faith, but also a way of thinking for Chinese individuals. Zhongyong includes two thinking forms: eclectic thinking (ET; i.e., “neither-A-nor-B”) and integrated thinking (IT; i.e., “both-A-and-B”). Given the inclination of Asian individuals toward situational cognition, this study used questions about situations familiar to Chinese undergraduates to activate either ET or IT. This was done to investigate the effects of the two divergent thinking forms of zhongyong on performance levels on the Remote Associates Test (RAT). Both behavioral and EEG results found that participants in the IT condition demonstrated higher RAT scores than those in the ET condition. The conclusion was that the RAT and priming tasks shared the same neural mechanism. This meant that the priming tasks of IT allowed participants to enter a state of creative preparation in advance, further affecting resolution of the RAT

    The large-scale transformation of natural ecosystems to socio-economic development land types under human activities was a primary reason for the decline of regional ecosystem services. It is a key issue for regional ecosystem planning and management to reveal the relationship between ecosystem services of different land use types under different socio-economic driving degrees. However, the current related research was not in-depth. Based on the land use data of Wuhan City in 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020, this study classified land use into three categories according to the different degrees of human activities on natural ecosystem development: the land use of a natural ecosystem (LUNE), the land use of a productive ecosystem (LUPE), and the land use of a socio-economic system (LUSE). The InVEST model was used to simulate five ecosystem services (grain yield, water yield, carbon storage, habitat quality, and water purification), and the spatio-temporal distribution and functional transformation of the three land use types were analyzed. Results showed that with the intensified urban expansion in Wuhan, the LUSE types increased to 2.7 times that of the original. However, the natural land types basically maintained a stable area, coupling with the large-scale transformation between the LUPE and LUSE types. Land use change resulted in significant spatial changes of five ecosystem services, especially carbon storage and habitat quality. The correlation analysis indicated that the five kinds of ecosystem services mainly showed a synergistic relationship, meanwhile the LUSE type denoted the most significant correlation with ecosystem services among these three category types. This study indicated that besides the protection of natural ecosystems, the LUSE type would become the key land use type in the planning and management of improving regional ecological function

    Relative Roles of Deterministic and Stochastic Processes in Driving the Vertical Distribution of Bacterial Communities in a Permafrost Core from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China.

    Understanding the processes that influence the structure of biotic communities is one of the major ecological topics, and both stochastic and deterministic processes are expected to be at work simultaneously in most communities. Here, we investigated the vertical distribution patterns of bacterial communities in a 10-m-long soil core taken within permafrost of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. To get a better understanding of the forces that govern these patterns, we examined the diversity and structure of bacterial communities, and the change in community composition along the vertical distance (spatial turnover) from both taxonomic and phylogenetic perspectives. Measures of taxonomic and phylogenetic beta diversity revealed that bacterial community composition changed continuously along the soil core, and showed a vertical distance-decay relationship. Multiple stepwise regression analysis suggested that bacterial alpha diversity and phylogenetic structure were strongly correlated with soil conductivity and pH but weakly correlated with depth. There was evidence that deterministic and stochastic processes collectively drived bacterial vertically-structured pattern. Bacterial communities in five soil horizons (two originated from the active layer and three from permafrost) of the permafrost core were phylogenetically random, indicator of stochastic processes. However, we found a stronger effect of deterministic processes related to soil pH, conductivity, and organic carbon content that were structuring the bacterial communities. We therefore conclude that the vertical distribution of bacterial communities was governed primarily by deterministic ecological selection, although stochastic processes were also at work. Furthermore, the strong impact of environmental conditions (for example, soil physicochemical parameters and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles) on these communities underlines the sensitivity of permafrost microorganisms to climate change and potentially subsequent permafrost thaw

    Convergence and divergence emerging in climatic controls of polynomial trends for northern ecosystem productivity over 2000–2018

    Southwest China has been the largest terrestrial carbon sink in China over the past 30 years, but has recently experienced a succession of droughts caused by high precipitation variability, potentially threatening vegetation productivity in the region. Yet, the impact of precipitation anomalies on the vegetation primary productivity is poorly known. We used an asymmetry index (AI) to explore possible asymmetric productivity responses to precipitation anomalies in Southwest China from 2003 to 2018, using a precipitation dataset, combined with gross primary productivity (GPP), net primary productivity (NPP), and vegetation optical depth (VOD) products. Our results indicate that the vegetation primary productivity of Southwest China shows a negative asymmetry, suggesting that the increase of vegetation primary productivity during wet years exceeds the decrease during dry years. However, this negative asymmetry of vegetation primary productivity was shifted towards a positive asymmetry during the period of analysis, suggesting that the resistance of vegetation to drought, has increased with the rise in the occurrence of drought events. Among the different biomes, grassland vegetation primary productivity had the highest sensitivity to precipitation anomalies, indicating that grasslands are more flexible than other biomes and able to adjust primary productivity in response to precipitation anomalies. Furthermore, our results showed that the asymmetry of vegetation primary productivity was influenced by the effects of temperature, precipitation, solar radiation, and anthropogenic and topographic factors. These findings improve our understanding of the response of vegetation primary productivity to climate change over Southwest China
