Resistance imparted by vitamin C, vitamin e and vitamin B12 to the acute hepatic glycogen change in rats caused by noise.

The effects of vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin B12 on the noise-induced acute change in hepatic glycogen content in rats were investigated. The exposure of rats to 95 dB and 110 dB of noise acutely reduced their hepatic glycogens. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and vitamin E (alpha -tocopherol) attenuated the noise-inducedacute reduction in the hepatic glycogen contents. This result suggests that antioxidants could reduce the change via reactive oxygen species. Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) delayed the noiseinduced change, a finding that suggests that vitamin B12 could postpone the acute change via compensating for vitamin B12 deficiency

BACKGROUND: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune condition characterized by peripheral neuropathy. The pathogenesis of GBS is not fully understood, and the mechanism of how intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) cures GBS is ambiguous. Herein, we investigated lymphocyte subsets in patients with two major subtypes of GBS (acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, AIDP, and acute motor axonal neuropathy, AMAN) before and after treatment with IVIG, and explored the possible mechanism of IVIG action. METHODS: Sixty-four patients with GBS were selected for our study and divided into two groups: AIDP (n = 38) and AMAN (n = 26). Thirty healthy individuals were chosen as the control group. Relative counts of peripheral blood T and B lymphocyte subsets were detected by flow cytometry analysis. RESULTS: In the AIDP group, the percentage of CD4(+)CD45RO(+) T cells was significantly higher, while the percentage of CD4(+)CD45RA(+) T cells was notably lower, than in the control group. After treatment with IVIG, the ratio of CD4(+)/CD8(+) T cells and the percentage of CD4(+)CD45RA(+) T cells increased, while the percentages of CD8(+) T cells and CD4(+)CD45RO(+) T cells decreased significantly, along with the number of CD19(+) B cells. However, there were not such obvious changes in the AMAN group. The Hughes scores were significantly lower in both the AIDP and AMAN groups following treatment with IVIG, but the changes in Hughes scores showed no significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested that the changes in T and B-lymphocyte subsets, especially in CD4(+)T-lymphocyte subsets, might play an important role in the pathogenesis of AIDP, and in the mechanism of IVIG action against AIDP

Dissociating stable nitrogen molecules under mild conditions by cyclic strain engineering

All quiet on the nitrogen front. The dissociation of stable diatomic nitrogen molecules (N-2) is one of the most challenging tasks in the scientific community and currently requires both high pressure and high temperature. Here, we demonstrate that N-2 can be dissociated under mild conditions by cyclic strain engineering. The method can be performed at a critical reaction pressure of less than 1 bar, and the temperature of the reaction container is only 40 degrees C. When graphite was used as a dissociated N* receptor, the normalized loading of N to C reached as high as 16.3 at/at %. Such efficient nitrogen dissociation is induced by the cyclic loading and unloading mechanical strain, which has the effect of altering the binding energy of N, facilitating adsorption in the strain-free stage and desorption in the compressive strain stage. Our finding may lead to opportunities for the direct synthesis of N-containing compounds from N-2

The title compound, C14H10ClN3O4·CH4O, was synthesized from the reaction of 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde with 4-nitrobenzohydrazide in methanol. The Schiff base molecule is nearly planar, with a dihedral angle of 9.1 (3)° between the two benzene rings. The methanol solvent molecules are linked to the Schiff base molecules by N—H⋯O, O—H⋯N and O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming chains running parallel to the a axis

Genomic diversity among Basmati rice (Oryza sativa L) mutants obtained through 60Co gamma radiations using AFLP markers

Mutation breeding can be considered successful in obtaining new cultivars and broadening the genetic base of rice crop. In order to obtain new varieties of rice with improved agronomic and grain characteristics, gamma radiation (60Co) has been used to generate novel mutants of the Basmati rice. In this study rice cultivars; Basmati-370 and Basmati-Pak, were exposed to different doses of gamma radiations and stable mutants along with parents were studied for genomic diversity on the basis of molecular marker (AFLP). Morphological data showed that mutants of Basmati-370 performed well for yield and yield components and grain physical parameters whereas, the mutant EL-30-2-1 has extra long rain trait as compared to the parent (Basmati-Pak). The genetic variations determined through AFLP revealed a total of 282 scorable bands, out of which 108 (37.81%) were polymorphic. The number of fragments produced by various primers combinations ranged from 11 - 26 with an average of 17.63fragments per primer combination. Maximum 26 bands were amplified with P-AAG/M-CAG primer combination and minimum one band was amplified with P-ATG/M-CTA primer combination. Two groups of genotypes were detected; group-A had DM-1-30-3-99, DM-1-30-34-99 and EF-1-20-52-04 mutants along with parent Basmati-370, whereas the group-B contained EL-30-2-1 and parent Basmati-Pak. The results of AFLP analysis indicated that the rate of polymorphism was 4.43% (DM-1-30-3-99), 4.25% (DM-1-30-34-99) and 6.38% (EF-1-20-52-04) among the genomes of mutants and parent Basmati-370, respectively, whereas polymorphism rate was 5.32% between genome of EL-30-2-1 and Basmati-Pak. The study further confirmed that the use of gamma radiations is an effective approach for creating new rice germplasm

Allergenicity and oral tolerance of enzymatic cross-linked tropomyosin evaluated using cell and mouse models

The enzymatic cross-linking of proteins to form high-molecular-weight compounds may alter their sensitization potential. The IgG-/IgE-binding activity, digestibility, allergenicity, and oral tolerance of cross-linked tropomyosin with tyrosinase (CTC) or horseradish peroxidase (CHP) were investigated. ELISA results demonstrated CTC or CHP reduced its IgE-binding activity by 34.5 ± 1.8 and 63.5 ± 0.6%, respectively. Compared with native tropomyosin or CTC, CHP was more easily digested into small fragments; CHP decreased the degranulation of RBL-2H3 cells and increased endocytosis by dendritic cells. CHP can induce oral tolerance and reduce allergenicity in mice by decreasing IgE and IgG1 levels in serum, the production of T-cell cytokines, and the percentage composition of dendritic cells. These findings demonstrate CHP has more potential of reducing the allergenicity than CTC via influencing the morphology of protein, changing the original method of antigen presentation, modulating the Th1/Th2 immunobalance, and inducing the oral tolerance of the allergen tropomyosin
