    CCD photometric study of the W UMa-type binary II CMa in the field of Berkeley 33

    The CCD photometric data of the EW-type binary, II CMa, which is a contact star in the field of the middle-aged open cluster Berkeley 33, are presented. The complete R light curve was obtained. In the present paper, using the five CCD epochs of light minimum (three of them are calculated from Mazur et al. (1993)'s data and two from our new data), the orbital period P was revised to 0.22919704 days. The complete R light curve was analyzed by using the 2003 version of W-D (Wilson-Devinney) program. It is found that this is a contact system with a mass ratio q=0.9q=0.9 and a contact factor f=4.1f=4.1%. The high mass ratio (q=0.9q=0.9) and the low contact factor (f=4.1f=4.1%) indicate that the system just evolved into the marginal contact stage

    Heat transport capacity of an axial-rotating single- loop oscillating heat pipe for abrasive-milling tools

    In order to enhance heat transfer in the abrasive-milling processes to reduce thermal damage, the concept of employing oscillating heat pipes (OHPs) in an abrasive-milling tool is proposed. A single-loop OHP (SLOHP) is positioned on the plane parallel to the rotational axis of the tool. In this case, centrifugal accelerations do not segregate the fluid between the evaporator and condenser. The experimental investigation is conducted to study the effects of centrifugal acceleration (0–738 m/s2), heat flux (9100–31,850 W/m2) and working fluids (methanol, acetone and water) on the thermal performance. Results show that the centrifugal acceleration has a positive influence on the thermal performance of the axial-rotating SLOHP when filled with acetone or methanol. As for water, with the increase of centrifugal acceleration, the heat transfer performance first increases and then decreases. The thermal performance enhances for higher heat flux rises for all the fluids. The flow inside the axial-rotating SLOHP is analyzed by a slow-motion visualization supported by the theoretical analysis. Based on the theoretical analysis, the rotation will increase the resistance for the vapor to penetrate through the liquid slugs to form an annular flow, which is verified by the visualization

    Antecedents of attitude and their impact on behavioral intention in the staycation context

    The year 2020 and 2021 have been decimated by the pandemic, leading to outbound vacations largely scrapped. Staycation, a typical domestic journal, has then been adopted by those who are tired of self-isolation for so long. This study aims to explore and assess the drivers exerting impact on attitude of tourists toward staycation and the interrelationship among the research constructs is also examined. A quantitative analysis is employed for evaluating the roles of reduced risk perception, benign envy, and perceived benefits as they exert the effect on attitude toward staycation. An online questionnaire survey was used, and a total of 213 samples were collected from target respondents in Hong Kong, which were still under lockdown at the time of the study. The results of the study showed that reduced risk perception, benign envy as well as perceived benefits will influence tourists’ attitude toward staycation. The managerial and theoretical implications of the results are discussed based on the significant relationships identified in the study

    Enhancing the number of modes in metasurfaced reverberation chambers for field uniformity improvement

    The use of metasurfaces to increase the number of modes, lower the operating frequency, and improve the field uniformity in reverberation chambers (RCs) is investigated in this paper. The method used to improve the field uniformity and decrease the resonance frequencies is based on increasing the number of modes by using the concept of subwavelength cavities. The resonance frequencies of a RC with metasurface wall are derived and expressed analytically in terms of macroscopic characteristics. Simulation of the reflection phase of the unit cell is then given as a guideline to choose the required microscopic parameters of the designed metasurface. The mode density in such subwavelength RCs is then obtained using a numerical eigenmode solver. Compared to traditional RCs, a much higher modal density is obtained at low frequencies. The standard deviation of the field uniformity in the test volume of the RC corresponding to different types of metasurface walls is finally compared. It is shown that by increasing the number of modes in the RC at the lower band, the operating frequency decreases and the field uniformity of the RC is improved

    Seasonal, Spatial Distribution and Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Surface Sediments from a Watershed Area in Gonghu Bay in Taihu Lake, China

    Surface sediments from five stations within Gonghu Bay in Taihu Lake, China, were sampled for seasonal and spatial metal contamination analysis variations and ecological risks assessment from April 2009 to January 2010. The Contamination Factor (CF) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) indicated that the sediments in Gonghu Bay ranged from unpolluted to moderately polluted, except for Cd. The one-way ANOVA analysis results showed that the Pb, Zn, Cr, and Cu concentrations were higher at station 3 (lake inlet) and the Cr, Pb, and Zn concentrations were significantly higher in the spring. Additionally, using BCR¡¦s sequential extraction, the results showed that the fractionated metals Zn and Cd were observed as bioavailable fractions in the sediments, which could have potential moderate mobility in the water system. There was a significant increase in the bioavailable form during winter. The ratio of secondary and primary phrase (RSP) decreased according to the order Zn > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd > Cr. Finally, these results indicated that the sediments of Gonghu Bay were polluted by Cd, Zn, and Cu, which provides a scientific basis for effectively protecting sediments in watershed areas from long-term heavy metal accumulation

    Logistic Regression Analysis of Factors Influencing the Effectiveness of Intensive Sound Masking Therapy in Patients with Tinnitus

    Objectives: To investigate factors influencing the effectiveness intensive sound masking therapy on tinnitus using Logistic Regression Analysis. Design: The study used a retrospective cross-section analysis. Participants: 102 patients with tinnitus were recruited at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, China. Intervention: Intensive sound masking therapy was used as an intervention approach for patients with tinnitus. Primary and secondary outcome measures: participants underwent audiological investigations and tinnitus pitch and loudness matching measurements, followed by intensive sound masking therapy. The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) was used as the outcome measure pre- and post-treatment. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to investigate the association of demographic and audiological factors with effective therapy. Results: According to the THI score changes pre-and post-sound masking intervention, fifty-one participants were categorised into an effective group, the remaining 51 participants were placed in a non-effective group. Those in the effective group were significantly younger than those in the non-effective group (p=0.012). Significantly more participants had flat audiogram configurations in the effective group (p=0.04). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that age (OR=0.96, 95% CI: 0.93, 0.99, p=0.007), audiometric configuration (p=0.027) and THI score pre-treatment (OR=1.04, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.07, p<0.001) were significantly associated with therapeutic effectiveness. Further analysis showed that patients with flat audiometric configurations were 5.45 times more likely to respond to intervention than those with high-frequency steeply sloping audiograms (OR=5.45, 95% CI: 1.67, 17.86, p=0.005). Conclusion: Audiometric configuration, age and THI scores appear to be predictive for the effectiveness of sound masking treatment. Gender, tinnitus characteristics and hearing threshold measures seem not to be related to treatment effectiveness. Further randomized control study is needed to provide further evidence of the effectiveness of prognostic factors in tinnitus interventions

    ATF4 activation by the p38MAPK–eIF4E axis mediates apoptosis and autophagy induced by selenite in Jurkat cells

    AbstractPrevious studies have shown that selenite exerts pro-apoptosis and pro-autophagy effects and is associated with the activation of ER stress in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Herein we demonstrate the underlying mechanisms by which the activation of p38MAPK plays essential roles in apoptosis and autophagy and the coordination of cellular metabolic processes during leukemia therapy. MKK3/6-dependent activation of p38MAPK is required for the phosphorylation of eIF4E, thus initiating the translation of ER stress-related transcription factor ATF4. Upregulated ATF4 results in the transcriptional initiation of the apoptosis-related chop gene and autophagy-related map1lc3b gene, through which selenite links ER stress to apoptosis and autophagy during leukemia treatment. Moreover, autophagy induction enhances cell apoptosis under this condition
