    The non-overlapping statistical approximation to overlapping group lasso

    Group lasso is a commonly used regularization method in statistical learning in which parameters are eliminated from the model according to predefined groups. However, when the groups overlap, optimizing the group lasso penalized objective can be time-consuming on large-scale problems because of the non-separability induced by the overlapping groups. This bottleneck has seriously limited the application of overlapping group lasso regularization in many modern problems, such as gene pathway selection and graphical model estimation. In this paper, we propose a separable penalty as an approximation of the overlapping group lasso penalty. Thanks to the separability, the computation of regularization based on our penalty is substantially faster than that of the overlapping group lasso, especially for large-scale and high-dimensional problems. We show that the penalty is the tightest separable relaxation of the overlapping group lasso norm within the family of q1/q2\ell_{q_1}/\ell_{q_2} norms. Moreover, we show that the estimator based on the proposed separable penalty is statistically equivalent to the one based on the overlapping group lasso penalty with respect to their error bounds and the rate-optimal performance under the squared loss. We demonstrate the faster computational time and statistical equivalence of our method compared with the overlapping group lasso in simulation examples and a classification problem of cancer tumors based on gene expression and multiple gene pathways

    Splitting Method for Support Vector Machine in Reproducing Kernel Banach Space with Lower Semi-continuous Loss Function

    In this paper, we use the splitting method to solve support vector machine in reproducing kernel Banach space with lower semi-continuous loss function. We equivalently transfer support vector machines in reproducing kernel Banach space with lower semi-continuous loss function to a finite-dimensional tensor Optimization and propose the splitting method based on alternating direction method of multipliers. By Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz inequality, the iterative sequence obtained by this splitting method is globally convergent to a stationary point if the loss function is lower semi-continuous and subanalytic.     Ionization Induced by the Ponderomotive Force in Intense and High-Frequency Laser Fields

    Atomic stabilization is a universal phenomenon that occurs when atoms interact with intense and high-frequency laser fields. In this work, we systematically study the influence of the ponderomotive (PM) force, present around the laser focus, on atomic stabilization. We show that the PM force could induce tunneling and even over-barrier ionization to the otherwise stabilized atoms. Such effect may overweight the typical multiphoton ionization under moderate laser intensities. Our work highlights the importance of an improved treatment of atomic stabilization that includes the influence of the PM force

    Patient Outcomes After Hospital Discharge to Home with Home Health Care vs to a Skilled Nursing Facility

    In this study of more than 17 million Medicare hospitalizations between 2010 and 2016, patients discharged to home health care had a 5.6 percent higher 30-day readmission rate than similar patients discharged to a skilled nursing facility (SNF). There was no difference in mortality or functional outcomes between the two groups, but home health care was associated with an average savings of $4,514 in total Medicare payments in the 60 days after the first hospital admission

    Connecting Researchers with Companies for University-Industry Collaboration

    Nowadays, companies are spending more time and money to enhance their innovation ability to respond to the increasing market competition. The pressure makes companies seek help from external knowledge, especially those from academia. Unfortunately, there is a gap between knowledge seekers (companies) and suppliers (researchers) due to the scattered and asymmetric information. To facilitate shared economy, various platforms are designed to connect the two parties. In this context, we design a researcher recommendation system to promote their collaboration (e.g. patent license, collaborative research, contract research and consultancy) based on a research social network with complete information about both researchers and companies. In the recommendation system, we evaluate researchers from three aspects, including expertise relevance, quality and trustworthiness. The experiment result shows that our system performs well in recommending suitable researchers for companies. The recommendation system has been implemented on an innovation platform, InnoCity.

    Twinning-assisted dynamic adjustment of grain boundary mobility

    Grain boundary (GB) plasticity dominates the mechanical behaviours of nanocrystalline materials. Under mechanical loading, GB configuration and its local deformation geometry change dynamically with the deformation; the dynamic variation of GB deformability, however, remains largely elusive, especially regarding its relation with the frequently-observed GB-associated deformation twins in nanocrystalline materials. Attention here is focused on the GB dynamics in metallic nanocrystals, by means of well-designed in situ nanomechanical testing integrated with molecular dynamics simulations. GBs with low mobility are found to dynamically adjust their configurations and local deformation geometries via crystallographic twinning, which instantly changes the GB dynamics and enhances the GB mobility. This selfadjust twin-assisted GB dynamics is found common in a wide range of face-centred cubic nanocrystalline metals under different deformation conditions. These findings enrich our understanding of GB-mediated plasticity, especially the dynamic behaviour of GBs, and bear practical implication for developing high performance nanocrystalline materials through interface engineering

    Cancer-targeted and intracellular delivery of Bcl-2-converting peptide with functional macroporous silica nanoparticles for biosafe treatment

    Abstract(#br)Therapeutic peptide, NuBCP-9 (N9) as a Bcl-2 functional converter, has been demonstrated to have the remarkable anticancer efficiency in Bcl-2-abundant cancer. However, it faced technical challenges in clinical use, such as the low bioavailability, the easily-destroyed bio-stability, and the insusceptibility to cellular interior. With the potential of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as the promising delivery vehicle of therapeutic macromolecules, we developed a kind of MSNs with the surface coating of folic acid (FA) for cancer cell targeting and with the macropore loading of N9 peptide for cancer therapy. Our results showed that the functional MSNs had the relatively greater biosafety than the naked MSNs in zebrafish models, leading to less than 30% embryo of death at 200 μg/ml, which could further specifically target the folate receptor (FR)-overexpressed cervical cancer HeLa cells instead of FR-negative normal embryonic kidney HEK 293T cells in a FA-competitive manner. N9 peptide with the delivery of functional MSNs could be internalized by HeLa cells, and co-localized with mitochondria in a Bcl-2-dependent manner. Moreover, N9 peptide delivered by FA-modified MSNs displayed the excellent anticancer efficiency with great selectivity, inducing approximately 52% HeLa cells into apoptosis. In summary, our results illustrated the potential of functional MSNs with large pore size as an efficient nanocarrier for the intracellular delivery of peptide drugs with targeting proteins to realize cancer therapy

    Characterization of the gut microbiota and fecal and blood metabolomes under various factors in urban children from Northwest China

    IntroductionChildren have regional dynamics in the gut microbiota development trajectory. Hitherto, the features and influencing factors of the gut microbiota and fecal and plasma metabolites in children from Northwest China remain unclear.MethodsShotgun metagenomic sequencing and untargeted metabolomics were performed on 100 healthy volunteers aged 2-12 years.ResultsAge, body mass index (BMI), regular physical exercise (RPE), and delivery mode (DM) significantly affect gut microbiota and metabolites. Lactobacillus, Butyricimonas, Prevotella, Alistipes, and predicted pathway propanoate production were significantly increased with age while Bifidobacterium breve, B. animalis, B. pseudocatenulatum, Streptococcus infantis, and carbohydrate degradation were decreased. Fecal metabolome revealed that the metabolism of caffeine, amino acids, and lipid significantly increased with age while galactose metabolism decreased. Noticeably, BMI was positively associated with pathogens including Erysipelatoclostridium ramosum, Parabacteroides distasonis, Ruminococcus gnavus, and amino acid metabolism but negatively associated with beneficial Akkermansia muciniphila, Alistipes finegoldii, Eubacterium ramulus, and caffeine metabolism. RPE has increased probiotic Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Anaerostipes hadrus, acetate and lactate production, and major nutrient metabolism in gut and plasma, but decreased pathobiont Bilophila wadsworthia, taurine degradation, and pentose phosphate pathway. Interestingly, DM affects the gut microbiota and metabolites throughout the whole childhood. Bifidobacterium animalis, Lactobacillus mucosae, L. ruminis, primary bile acid, and neomycin biosynthesis were enriched in eutocia, while anti-inflammatory Anaerofustis stercorihominis, Agathobaculum butyriciproducens, Collinsella intestinalis, and pathogenic Streptococcus salivarius, Catabacter hongkongensis, and amino acid metabolism were enriched in Cesarean section children.DiscussionOur results provided theoretical and data foundation for the gut microbiota and metabolites in preadolescent children’s growth and development in Northwest China
