    Time spent at home poststroke: “home-time” a meaningful and robust outcome measure for stroke trials

    <p><b>Background and Purpose:</b> Stroke outcome assessment requires some measure of functional recovery. Several instruments are in common use but all have recognized limitations. We examined duration of stay in the patient’s own home over the first 90 days since stroke—"home-time"—as an alternative outcome likely to show graded response with improved reliability.</p> <p><b>Methods:</b> We examined prospectively collected data from the GAIN International trial using analysis of variance with Bonferroni contrasts of adjacent modified Rankin scale score categories.</p> <p><b>Results:</b> We had full outcome data from 1717 of 1788 patients. Increasing home-time was associated with improved modified Rankin scale scores (P<0.0001). The relationship held across all modified Rankin scale grades except 4 to 5.</p> <p><b>Conclusions:</b> Home-time offers a robust, useful, and easily validated outcome measure for stroke, particularly across better recovery levels.</p&gt

    Liquid-Solid Transition of Hard Spheres Under Gravity

    We investigate the liquid-solid transition of two dimensional hard spheres in the presence of gravity. We determine the transition temperature and the fraction of particles in the solid regime as a function of temperature via Even-Driven molecular dynamics simulations and compare them with the theoretical predictions. We then examine the configurational statistics of a vibrating bed from the view point of the liquid-solid transition by explicitly determining the transition temperature and the effective temperature, T, of the bed, and present a relation between T and the vibration strength.Comment: 14 total pages, 4 figure

    Present Effects of Past Wildfires on Leaf Litter Breakdown in Stream Ecosystems

    We investigated the present effects from a 10-year-old wildfire on leaf litter breakdown rates in 3 headwater streams in central Idaho. These systems experienced a massive debris flow one year after the fire. Based on soil instability and burn patterns, we identified 3 stream conditions: unburned, burned only, and burned/scoured. We placed leaf bags containing willow leaves (Salix sp.) in each stream type and removed bags at various time intervals until all bags were collected 100 days after their introduction. Leaf material was dried and weighed, and decay rate coefficients were calculated. Macroinvertebrates colonizing the bags were enumerated and identified, and selected taxa were placed into trophic groups. We found that the unburned stream had the fastest leaf litter breakdown rate, the lowest level of incident light reaching the stream, and the largest amount of benthic organic matter. The burned/scoured stream was nearly opposite in all respects. Numbers of 2 detritivore invertebrate taxa, Serratella tibialis and Zapada oregonensis, were highest in the unburned stream but lowest in the burned/scoured stream. A third taxon, Baetis sp., showed the opposite relationship. Presence of predatory invertebrates did not affect detritivore abundance or leaf decay rate in the bags. Our research suggests that recovery response variables of some stream systems may not have returned to prefire levels even a decade after the initial wildfire. In this study, the recovery of our streams appears to be connected to the return of the riparian zone, though fire-induced debris flows may slow or alter final recovery of the stream system

    The First VERITAS Telescope

    The first atmospheric Cherenkov telescope of VERITAS (the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) has been in operation since February 2005. We present here a technical description of the instrument and a summary of its performance. The calibration methods are described, along with the results of Monte Carlo simulations of the telescope and comparisons between real and simulated data. The analysis of TeV Îł\gamma-ray observations of the Crab Nebula, including the reconstructed energy spectrum, is shown to give results consistent with earlier measurements. The telescope is operating as expected and has met or exceeded all design specifications.Comment: Accepted by Astroparticle Physic

    Transverse Beam Spin Asymmetries in Forward-Angle Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering

    We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic scattering of transversely-polarized 3 GeV electrons from unpolarized protons at Q^2 = 0.15, 0.25 (GeV/c)^2. The results are inconsistent with calculations solely using the elastic nucleon intermediate state, and generally agree with calculations with significant inelastic hadronic intermediate state contributions.     Olfactory Jump Reflex Habituation in Drosophila and Effects of Classical Conditioning Mutations

    Habituation is a nonassociative learning mechanism, in which an initial response toward repeated stimuli gradually wanes. This is amongst the simplest and most widespread forms of behavioral plasticity. So far, neither the underlying molecular mechanisms nor the precise neural networks of habituation are well understood. We have developed a novel paradigm to quantify habituation of the olfactory jump reflex in Drosophila. We present data demonstrating several behavioral properties of this phenomenon, generally observed in other species. We also show that the dunce and rutabaga memory mutants behave abnormally in this assay, suggesting that this assay might be used in behavioral screens for new mutants with defects in this simpler form of behavioral plasticity

    The Fueling and Evolution of AGN: Internal and External Triggers

    In this chapter, I review the fueling and evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) under the influence of internal and external triggers, namely intrinsic properties of host galaxies (morphological or Hubble type, color, presence of bars and other non-axisymmetric features, etc) and external factors such as environment and interactions. The most daunting challenge in fueling AGN is arguably the angular momentum problem as even matter located at a radius of a few hundred pc must lose more than 99.99 % of its specific angular momentum before it is fit for consumption by a BH. I review mass accretion rates, angular momentum requirements, the effectiveness of different fueling mechanisms, and the growth and mass density of black BHs at different epochs. I discuss connections between the nuclear and larger-scale properties of AGN, both locally and at intermediate redshifts, outlining some recent results from the GEMS and GOODS HST surveys.Comment: Invited Review Chapter to appear in LNP Volume on "AGN Physics on All Scales", Chapter 6, in press. 40 pages, 12 figures.     A precision six-load-component transducer: A design incorporating finite-length measurement paths

    The design of an instrument is described that measures three resultant force components and three resultant moment components acting on a surface. Within the framework of linear elastostatics of an isotropic homogeneous material the device separates to a given precision the six resultant load components. Sensor paths of finite length are employed. Moreover if fiber-optic differential displacement sensors are used rather than traditional electrical resistance strain gages, the range and sensitivity of the instrument can in principle be improved without sacrificing the device stiffness. The primary reason for these improvements is that a complete solution to the equations of elasticity allows certain displacements to be measured over large distances and be combined to yield all of the resultant load components. These displacement measurements over a long distance accommodates the use of fiber-optic interferometric sensors. The use of optical sensors in contrast with electrical-resistance gages, has the potential to allow the measurement precision and range to scale with the geometry of the device rather than the maximum strain in the instrument.     An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics

    For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types
