Engineering Moir\'e Meta-crystals with Conventional Photonic and Phononic Structures

Recent discoveries on Mott insulating and unconventional superconducting states in twisted bilayer graphene with Moir\'e superlattices have reshaped the landscape of ''twistronics'' and paved the way for developing high-temperature superconductors and new devices for quantum computing and sensing. Meanwhile, artificially structured photonic and phononic metamaterials/crystals (or meta-crystals) have become a fertile playground for emulating quantum-mechanical features of condensed matter systems, revealing new routes for robust control of classical waves. Drawing inspiration from the success of twisted bilayer graphene, this perspective casts an overarching framework of the emerging Moir\'e photonic and phononic meta-crystals that promise novel classical-wave devices. We begin with the fundamentals of Moir\'e superlattices, before highlighting recent works that exploit twist angle and interlayer coupling as new ingredients to engineer and tailor the band structures and effective material properties of photonic and phononic meta-crystals. We finally discuss future directions and promises of this emerging area in materials science and wave physics.Comment: 4 figure

Ultrahigh-capacity non-periodic photon sieves operating in visible light

Miniaturization of optical structures makes it possible to control light at the nanoscale, but on the other hand it imposes a challenge of accurately handling numerous unit elements in a miniaturized device with aperiodic and random arrangements. Here, we report both the new analytical model and experimental demonstration of the photon sieves with ultrahigh-capacity of subwavelength holes (over 34 thousands) arranged in two different structural orders of randomness and aperiodicity. The random photon sieve produces a uniform optical hologram with high diffraction efficiency and free from twin images that are usually seen in conventional holography, while the aperiodic photon sieve manifests sub-diffraction-limit focusing in air. A hybrid approach is developed to make the design of random and aperiodic photon sieve viable for high-accuracy control of the amplitude, phase and polarization of visible light. The polarization independence of the photon sieve will also greatly benefit its applications in optical imaging and spectroscopyThis research is supported by the National Research Foundation, Prime Minister’s Office, Singapore under its Competitive Research Program (CRP Award No. NRF-CRP10-2012-04). The barley S-adenosylmethionine synthetase 3 gene HvSAMS3 positively regulates the tolerance to combined drought and salinity stress in Tibetan wild barley

Drought and salinity are two of the most frequently co-occurring abiotic stresses. Despite recent advances in the elucidation of the effects of these stresses individually during the vegetative stage of plants, significant gaps exist in our understanding of the combined effects of these two frequently co-occurring stresses. Here, Tibetan wild barley XZ5 (drought tolerant), XZ16 (salt tolerant), and cultivated barley cv. CM72 (salt tolerant) were subjected to drought (D), salinity (S), or a combination of both treatments (D+S). Protein synthesis is one of the primary activities of the green part of the plant. Therefore, leaf tissue is an important parameter to evaluate drought and salinity stress conditions. Sixty differentially expressed proteins were identified by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF) and classified into 9 biological processes based on Gene Ontology annotation. Among them, 21 proteins were found to be expressed under drought or salinity alone; however, under D+S, 7 proteins, including S-adenosylmethionine synthetase 3 (SAMS3), were exclusively upregulated in drought-tolerant XZ5 but not in CM72. HvSAMS3 carries both N-terminal and central domains compared with Arabidopsis and activates the expression of several ethylene (ET)-responsive transcription factors. HvSAMS3 is mainly expressed in the roots and stems, and HvSAMS3 is a secretory protein located in the cell membrane and cytoplasm. Barley stripe mosaic virus-based virus-induced gene silencing (BSMV-VIGS) of HvSAMS3 in XZ5 severely compromised its tolerance to D+S and significantly reduced plant growth and K+ uptake. The reduced tolerance to the combined stress was associated with the inhibition of polyamines such as spermidine and spermine, polyamine oxidase, ethylene, biotin, and antioxidant enzyme activities. Furthermore, the exogenous application of ethylene and biotin improved the tolerance to D+S in BSMV-VIGS:HvSAMS3-inoculated plants. Our findings highlight the significance of HvSAMS3 in the tolerance to D+S in XZ5
