Formulation of gradient multiaxial fatigue criteria
International audienceA formulation of gradient fatigue criteria is proposed in the context of multiaxial high-cycle fatigue (HCF) of metallic materials. The notable dependence of fatigue limit on some common factors not taken into account in classical fatigue criteria, is analyzed and modeled. Three interconnected factors, the size, stress gradient and loading effects, are here investigated. A new class of fatigue criteria extended from classical ones with stress gradient terms introduced not only in the normal stress but also in the shear stress components, is formulated. Such a formulation allows to capture gradient effects and related “size” effects, as well as to cover a wide range of loading mode, then can model both phenomena “Smaller is Stronger” and “Higher Gradient is Stronger”. Gradient versions of some classical fatigue criteria such as Crossland and Dang Van are provided as illustrations
Changes in Bitterness, Antioxidant Activity and Total Phenolic Content of Grapefruit Juice Fermented by Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium Strains
Four strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium including L. plantarum 01, L. fermentum D13, L. rhamnosus B01725, and B. bifidum B7.5 exhibiting naringinase production were applied in grapefruit juice fermentation. All investigated strains grew well in grapefruit juice without nutrition supplementation. In all cases, cell counts were 108–109 CFU ml−1 after 24 hours of fermentation. The highest lactic acid and acetic acid productions were observed in the case of strain L. plantarum 01. The L. plantarum 01 and L. fermentum D13 strains prefer glucose over fructose and sucrose, whereas fructose was the most favoured sugar for L. rhamnosus B01725 and B. bifidum B7.5. At the end of the fermentation process, antioxidant activity and total polyphenol content of grapefruit juice decreased in all cases, but the changes were not significant. Significant decrease of naringin was observed in the case of L. plantarum 01, 28% naringin in grapefruit juice was removed after fermentation. This result is promising for development of technology for production of probiotic grapefruit juice
Observer-based decentralized approach to robotic formation control
Control of a group of mobile robots in a formation requires not only environmental sensing but also communication among vehicles. Enlarging the size of the platoon of vehicles causes difficulties due to communications bandwidth limitations. Decentralized control may be an appropriate approach in those cases when the states of all vehicles cannot be obtained in a centralized manner. This paper presents a solution to the problem of decentralized implementation of a global state-feedback controller for N mobile robots in a formation. The proposed solution is based on the design of functional observers to estimate asymptotically the global state-feedback control signals by using the corresponding local output information and some exogenous global functions. The proposed technique is tested through simulation and experiments for the control of groups of Pinoneer-based non-holonomic mobile robots.<br /
Cooper pair insulator in amorphous films induced by nanometer-scale thickness variations
Unusual transport properties of superconducting (SC) materials, such as the
under doped cuprates, low dimensional superconductors in strong magnetic
fields, and insulating films near the Insulator Superconductor Transition
(IST), have been attributed to the formation of inhomogeneous phases.
Difficulty correlating the behaviors with observations of the inhomogeneities
make these connections uncertain. Of primary interest here are proposals that
insulating films near the IST, which show an activated resistance and giant
positive magnetoresistance, contain islands of Cooper Pairs (CPs). Here we
present evidence that these types of inhomogeneities are essential to such an
insulating phase in amorphous Bi (a-Bi) films deposited on substrates patterned
with nanometer-sized holes. The patterning induces film thickness variations,
and corresponding coupling constant variations, that transform the composition
of the insulator from localized electrons to CPs. Analyses near the
thickness-tuned ISTs of films on nine different substrates show that weak links
between SC islands dominate the transport. In particular, the ISTs all occur
when the link resistance approaches the resistance quantum for pairs. These
observations lead to a detailed picture of CPs localized by spatial variations

Adaptive Genetic Algorithm for Crystal Structure Prediction
We present a genetic algorithm (GA) for structural search that combines the
speed of structure exploration by classical potentials with the accuracy of
density functional theory (DFT) calculations in an adaptive and iterative way.
This strategy increases the efficiency of the DFT-based GA by several orders of
magnitude. This gain allows considerable increase in size and complexity of
systems that can be studied by first principles. The method's performance is
illustrated by successful structure identifications of complex binary and
ternary inter-metallic compounds with 36 and 54 atoms per cell, respectively.
The discovery of a multi-TPa Mg-silicate phase with unit cell containing up to
56 atoms is also reported. Such phase is likely to be an essential component of
