Forecasting severe ice storms using numerical weather prediction: the March 2010 Newfoundland event
The northeast coast of North America is frequently hit by severe ice storms. These freezing rain events can produce large ice accretions that damage structures, frequently power transmission and distribution infrastructure. For this reason, it is highly desirable to model and forecast such icing events, so that the consequent damages can be prevented or mitigated. The case study presented in this paper focuses on the March 2010 ice storm event that took place in eastern Newfoundland. We apply a combination of a numerical weather prediction model and an ice accretion algorithm to simulate a forecast of this event.

The main goals of this study are to compare the simulated meteorological variables to observations, and to assess the ability of the model to accurately predict the ice accretion load for different forecast horizons. The duration and timing of the freezing rain event that occurred between the night of 4 March and the morning of 6 March was simulated well in all model runs. The total precipitation amounts in the model, however, differed by up to a factor of two from the observations. The accuracy of the model air temperature strongly depended on the forecast horizon, but it was acceptable for all simulation runs. The simulated accretion loads were also compared to the design values for power delivery structures in the region. The results indicated that the simulated values exceeded design criteria in the areas of reported damage and power outages
Phantom Pains: The Image of Bulgarian Transition in Elena Aleksieva’s Dramas
Phantom Pains: The Image of Bulgarian Transition in Elena Aleksieva’s Dramas
The article analyzes Elena Aleksieva’s dramas in the books Ангелски огън [Angel fire, 2014] and Жертви на любовта [Victims of love, 2015] in the context of the social changes in Bulgaria after 1989. Although this Bulgarian author does not write about the transition itself, the picture of the time created by her plays is very clear and representative. In the article, I focus on elements that serve to create this picture, such as freedom, women and their role in the new society, social stratification and art (particularly theatre).
Bóle fantomowe. Obraz bułgarskiej tranzycji w dramatach Eleny Aleksijewej
Algorithms for optimal control of hybrid systems with sliding motion
This paper concerns two algorithms for solving optimal control problems with
hybrid systems. The first algorithm aims at hybrid systems exhibiting sliding
modes. The first algorithm has several features which distinguishes it from the
other algorithms for problems described by hybrid systems. First of all, it can
cope with hybrid systems which exhibit sliding modes. Secondly, the systems
motion on the switching surface is described by index 2 differential--algebraic
equations and that guarantees accurate tracking of the sliding motion surface.
Thirdly, the gradients of the problems functionals are evaluated with the help
of adjoint equations. The adjoint equations presented in the paper take into
account sliding motion and exhibit jump conditions at transition times. We
state optimality conditions in the form of the weak maximum principle for
optimal control problems with hybrid systems exhibiting sliding modes and with
piecewise differentiable controls. The second algorithm is for optimal control
problems with hybrid systems which do not exhibit sliding motion. In the case
of this algorithm we assume that control functions are measurable functions.
For each algorithm, we show that every accumulation point of the sequence
generated by the algorithm satisfies the weak maximum principle

Why Do States Use Cyber Weapons? An Empirical Analysis of State-sponsored Cyber Interactions and Rival Dynamics, 2011-2011
When peripheral concept becomes a key issue : the term "(un)translatability" in the context of Bulgarian literature and culture : a reconnaissance
In recent years, in Bulgaria returns the belief of untranslatability formulated equally in relation to native literature, as well as culture and is expressed both by the creators and researchers.
The term "untranslatability" appears essentially in two spaces – public discourse and scientific discourse. This article focuses on the second one, namely on scientific discourse. The paper analyzes selected articles, debates and scientific studies published in the beginning of 21st century. The purpose of the proposed exegesis is to try to understand what Bulgarian researchers
understand using the term "neprevodimost"
Impossible future : forms of forgetting and oblivion in "Time Shelter" by Goergi Gospodinov
Losing memory is a kind of axis of the latest novel by a Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov. The article attempts to trace the forms of oblivion and forgetting process that appear in Time Shelter. The point of reference for the considerations is the characters’ attitude to time and history. At the same time, the study is an attempt to read the implied forms of oblivion which seem to be connected with the opposite process - remembering
Polish Women Translators Outside the Canon. On a Forgotten Translation of Dostoyevsky’s The Devils
In 1928, two translations of Dostoevsky’s The Devils were published: one by Tadeusz Zagórski, another by an unknown woman signed as J.B. This article analyses both translations to understand why Zagórski’s version has become canonical. It seems that the main reasons for the privileged status of Zagórski’s translation are, on the one hand, its publisher’s strong position, and on the other – the visual aspect of the J.B. version. The J.B. edition was illustrated: the drawings depict the female characters of the novel. The illustrated plates present also excerpts selected from the novel, which are frequently amorous in tone. Most probably because of its distinctly feminine look, the J.B. translation of The Devils was superseded by Zagórski’s version
Wybrzeże Morza Czarnego jako przestrzeń (wyobrażonej?) wolności we współczesnym kinie bułgarskim
The article analyzes the metaphor of the Black Sea in three contemporary Bulgarian movies – Hunting down small predators (dir. Tsvetodar Markov, 2010), Sneakers (dir. Ivan Vladimirov, Valeri Jordanov, 2011) and The Sinking of Sozopol (dir. Kostadin Bonev, 2014). The author of the thesis aims to answer the question about the origin of the symbolic meaning of the space and its connection with experiencing of freedom. The analysis focuses on two aspects of freedom – symbolic and generational. The article analyzes the metaphor of the Black Sea in three contemporary Bulgarian movies – Hunting down small predators (dir.
