    A new neurosurgical tool incorporating differential geometry and cellular automata techniques

    Using optical coherence imaging, it is possible to visualize seizure progression intraoperatively. However, it is difficult to pinpoint an exact epileptic focus. This is crucial in attempts to minimize the amount of resection necessary during surgical therapeutic interventions for epilepsy and is typically done approximately from visual inspection of optical coherence imaging stills. In this paper, we create an algorithm with the potential to pinpoint the source of a seizure from an optical coherence imaging still. To accomplish this, a grid is overlaid on optical coherence imaging stills. This then serves as a grid for a two-dimensional cellular automation. Each cell is associated with a Riemannian curvature tensor representing the curvature of the brain's surface in all directions for a cell. Cells which overlay portions of the image which show neurons that are firing are considered "depolarized"

    An open trial in the NHS of Blues Begone®: A new home based computerised CBT program

    Background: Computer based treatment for depression and anxiety has been available for several years and has demonstrated useful clinical effects. Most existing computerized CBT products in the UK that are designed to treat depression and co-morbid anxiety require patients to visit a clinic and require staff input to manage the process. Such intervention adds to the costs and bottlenecks in delivering a clinically effective treatment with mass availability. Internet treatment options are becoming more readily available, although data to support use are not yet strong, and most still require human assessment and telephone support. Blues Begone (R) is a new computerized CBT program that has been designed to be used at home with minimal human support. Method: This pilot project provides data from an open trial of Blues Begone (R) with both primary and secondary care patients. Results: One hundred patients started Blues Begone (R), 58 completed the program, 72% (n = 42) of completers achieved reliable change and (n = 36) 62% achieved both reliable and clinically significant change, and may be considered to have recovered by the end of the program. Conclusion: These data provide the first demonstration of the potential viability of Blues Begone (R) as a home based computerized treatment for depression and anxiety

    Examining the frequency and nature of gambling marketing in televised broadcasts of professional sporting events in the United Kingdom

    Objective: Gambling operators in the United Kingdom have introduced a voluntary ban on adverts broadcast during televised sport before 21:00 (the 'whistle-to-whistle' ban). To inform debates around the potential effectiveness of this ban, we examine the frequency and nature of gambling marketing in televised broadcasts across professional sporting events. Study Design: Frequency analysis of verbal and visual gambling marketing references during television broadcasts of football (n=5), tennis, Formula 1, boxing and rugby union (each n=1) from 2018. Methods: For each gambling reference, we coded: whether it appeared in-play or out-of-play; location (e.g. pitch-side advertising); format (e.g. branded merchandise); duration (seconds); number of identical references visible simultaneously; brand; and presence of age restriction or harm reduction messages. Results: Boxing contained the most gambling references, on average, per broadcast minute (4.70 references), followed by football (2.75), rugby union (0.55), and tennis (0.11). Formula 1 contained no gambling references. In boxing, references most frequently appeared within the area-of-play. For football and rugby union, references most frequently appeared around the pitch border or within the area-of-play (e.g. branded shirts). Only a small minority of references were for adverts during commercial breaks that would be subject to the whistle-to-whistle ban(e.g. 2% of references in football). Less than 1% of references in boxing, and only 3% of references in football, contained age restriction or harm-reduction messages. Conclusions: As gambling sponsorship extends much beyond adverts in commercial breaks, the 'whistle-to-whistle' ban will have limited effect on gambling exposure.     The use of tumour markers CEA, CA-195 and CA-242 in evaluating the response to chemotherapy in patients with advanced colorectal cancer.

    Tumour markers CEA, CA-195 and CA-242 were measured in 33 patients undergoing chemotherapy for advanced colorectal cancer. The aim was to determine whether they could be used to accurately monitor the course of the disease, and reduce the need for imaging. Treatment with a 5-fluorouracil based regimen resulted in a partial response in nine patients (27%), whereas the remainder either had disease stabilisation or suffered from progression. Before treatment the CEA was elevated in 85% of patients and the CA-195 and CA-242 in 78%. All three markers were elevated in 70% and at least one elevated in 93%. CA-195 and CA-242 appeared to be co-expressed, by contrast with the CEA. When compared to the results of serial CT scanning the CEA correlated best with the course of the disease, the positive predictive value being 54% for a partial response, 77% for minor and partial responses combined and 100% for progressive disease. The corresponding values for CA-195 were 46%, 62% and 100% respectively and for CA-242, 50%, 67% and 100% respectively. Thus, although falling levels of markers overestimate the number of responses demonstrated by imaging, rising tumour markers invariably herald progressive disease. This was often evident up to 16 weeks before progression was observed on scanning. CEA is the most useful of the three markers in the monitoring of patients being treated for advanced colorectal cancer, but other markers may prove valuable if the CEA is normal. The use of tumour markers should reduce the need for regular scanning

    Alcohol Marketing during the UEFA EURO 2016 Football Tournament: A Frequency Analysis

    This study examined the frequency and nature of alcohol marketing references in broadcasts of the 2016 UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) European Championships football tournament in the United Kingdom (UK). Eighteen matches from across the tournament were recorded in full as broadcast in the UK, including all four matches featuring the English national team and all seven featuring the French national team. All visual and verbal references to alcohol marketing were recorded using a tool with high inter-rater reliability. A total of 2213 alcohol marketing references were recorded, an average of 122.94 per broadcast and 0.65 per broadcast minute (0.52 per minute in-play and 0.80 per minute out-of-play). Almost all references were visual (97.5%), with 77.9% occurring around the pitch border. Almost all (90.6%) were indirect references to alcohol brands (e.g., references to well-known slogans), compared to only 9.4% direct references to brands (e.g., brand names). The frequency of references to alcohol marketing was high. Although the overall proportion of direct brand references was low, the high proportion of indirect references demonstrates that alcohol producers were able to circumvent the French national law governing alcohol marketing (the Loi Évin) using indirect “alibi marketing”.     Modeling Checkpoint-Based Movement with the Earth Mover's Distance

    Movement data comes in various forms, including trajectory data and checkpoint data. While trajectories give detailed information about the movement of individual entities, checkpoint data in its simplest form does not give identities, just counts at checkpoints. However, checkpoint data is of increasing interest since it is readily available due to privacy reasons and as a by-product of other data collection. In this paper we propose to use the Earth Mover’s Distance as a versatile tool to reconstruct individual movements or flow based on checkpoint counts at different times. We analyze the modeling possibilities and provide experiments that validate model predictions, based on coarse-grained aggregations of data about actual movements of couriers in London, UK. While we cannot expect to reconstruct precise individual movements from highly granular checkpoint data, the evaluation does show that the approach can generate meaningful estimates of object movements.
