    Efficient Universal Noiseless Source Codes

    Although the existence of universal noiseless variable-rate codes for the class of discrete stationary ergodic sources has previously been established, very few practical universal encoding methods are available. Efficient implementable universal source coding techniques are discussed in this paper. Results are presented on source codes for which a small value of the maximum redundancy is achieved with a relatively short block length. A constructive proof of the existence of universal noiseless codes for discrete stationary sources is first presented. The proof is shown to provide a method for obtaining efficient universal noiseless variable-rate codes for various classes of sources. For memoryless sources, upper and lower bounds are obtained for the minimax redundancy as a function of the block length of the code. Several techniques for constructing universal noiseless source codes for memoryless sources are presented and their redundancies are compared with the bounds. Consideration is given to possible applications to data compression for certain nonstationary sources

    Ovarian follicular waves and secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone after administration of GnRH at estrus

    An experiment was conducted to examine the effects of GnRH on the secretion of FSH, LH, estradiol, and progesterone in serum and changes in ovarian structures. Dairy cows were assigned randomly to receive either 100 μg of GnRH or saline 12 hr after estrus (day 0) was detected. Blood was collected daily to assess changes in serum estradiol and progesterone and every 12 min for 8 hr on days 8 and 15 after estrus to assess concentrations of FSH and LH. Diameter and number of follicles were determined daily by real-time ultrasonography. Two patterns of follicular development were observed. The day of peak diameter of each dominant follicle (three or four per cycle) was synchronous with increases in estradiol in serum. The dominant follicle grew at a faster rate in all GnRH-treated cows. We concluded that administering GnRH at estrus increased the pulse frequency of FSH on days 8 and 15 of the cycle, altered follicular dynamics of dominant follicles of the subsequent estrous cycle, and tended to increase concentrations of progesterone in serum of cows

    Use of milk progesterone and PGF2α in a scheduled insemination program

    Holstein cows milked twice daily were assigned to be inseminated at their first detected estrus (control) after 42 days in milk or received PGFza (PG) after 42 days, if they had a high milk progesterone (P4) test on any of 3 consecutive Mondays until first inseminated. Milk P4 tests and injections of PG were given on Mondays, and most of the breeding occurred on Thursdays and Fridays. The proportion of cows inseminated within 21 days of the beginning of the breeding period was greater in the milk P4 + PG group (52.8%) than in the control (38.9%). Compared to controls, use of PG reduced days to first service by 12.2 ± 3.1 d, calving intervals by 23.3 ± 8.9 d, rate of reproductive culling, and cost per pregnancy. We concluded that using PG as a management tool in an AI program is warranted and cost effective.     We report an infrared optical study of the pnictide high-temperature superconductor BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 and its parent compound BaFe2As2. We demonstrate that electronic correlations are moderately strong and do not change across the spin-density wave transition or with doping. By examining the energy scale and direction of spectral weight transfer, we argue that Hund\u27s coupling J is the primary mechanism that gives rise to correlations

    Online adaptive planning methods for intensity-modulated radiotherapy

    Online adaptive radiation therapy aims at adapting a patient's treatment plan to their current anatomy to account for inter-fraction variations before daily treatment delivery. As this process needs to be accomplished while the patient is immobilized on the treatment couch, it requires time-efficient adaptive planning methods to generate a quality daily treatment plan rapidly. The conventional planning methods do not meet the time requirement of online adaptive radiation therapy because they often involve excessive human intervention, significantly prolonging the planning phase. This article reviews the planning strategies employed by current commercial online adaptive radiation therapy systems, research on online adaptive planning, and artificial intelligence's potential application to online adaptive planning.<br/

    We present a comprehensive infrared spectroscopic study of lattice dynamics in the pnictide parent compound BaFe2_2As2_2. In the tetragonal structural phase, we observe the two degenerate symmetry-allowed in-plane infrared active phonon modes. Following the structural transition from the tetragonal to orthorhombic phase, we observe splitting into four non-degenerate phonon modes and a significant phonon strength enhancement. These detailed data allow us to provide a physical explanation for the anomalous phonon strength enhancement as the result of anisotropic conductivity due to Hund's coupling.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

    An infrared probe of the insulator-to-metal transition in GaMnAs and GaBeAs

    We report infrared studies of the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) in GaAs doped with either magnetic (Mn) or non-magnetic acceptors (Be). We observe a resonance with a natural assignment to impurity states in the insulating regime of Ga1−x_{1-x}Mnx_xAs, which persists across the IMT to the highest doping (16%). Beyond the IMT boundary, behavior combining insulating and metallic trends also persists to the highest Mn doping. Be doped samples however, display conventional metallicity just above the critical IMT concentration, with features indicative of transport within the host valence band
