    Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new disease with different phases that can be catastrophic for subpopulations of patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary disease states at baseline. Appreciation for these different phases and treatment modalities, including manipulation of ventilatory settings and therapeutics, has made it a less lethal disease than when it emerged earlier this year. Different aspects of the disease are still largely unknown. However, laboratory investigation and clinical course of the COVID-19 show that this new disease is not a typical acute respiratory distress syndrome process, especially during the first phase. For this reason, the best strategy to be applied is to treat differently the single phases and to support the single functions of the failing organs as they appear

    Although pain treatment has been described as a fundamental human right, the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic forced healthcare systems worldwide to redistribute healthcare resources toward intensive care units and other COVID-19 dedicated sites. As most chronic pain services were subsequently deemed non-urgent, all outpatient and elective interventional procedures have been reduced or interrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to reduce the risk of viral spread. The shutdown of pain services jointly to the home lockdown imposed by governments has affected chronic pain management worldwide with additional impact on patients' psychological health. Therefore, the aim of this review is to analyze the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on chronic pain treatment and to address what types of strategies can be implemented or supported in order to overcome imposed limitations in delivery of chronic pain patient care

    Palliative care in the ICU: relief of pain, dyspnea, and thirst-A report from the IPAL-ICU Advisory Board

    Purpose: Pain, dyspnea, and thirst are three of the most prevalent, intense, and distressing symptoms of intensive care unit (ICU) patients. In this report, the interdisciplinary Advisory Board of the Improving Palliative Care in the ICU(IPAL-ICU) Project brings together expertise in both critical care and palliative care along with current information to address challenges in assessment and management. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive review of literature focusing on intensive care and palliative care research related to palliation of pain, dyspnea, and thirst. Results: Evidence-based methods to assess pain are the enlarged 0-10 Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for ICU patients able to self-report and the Critical Care Pain Observation Tool or Behavior Pain Scale for patients who cannot report symptoms verbally or non-verbally. The Respiratory Distress Observation Scale is the only known behavioral scale for assessment of dyspnea, and thirst is evaluated by patient self-report using an 0-10 NRS. Opioids remain the mainstay for pain management, and all available intravenous opioids, when titrated to similar pain intensity end points, are equally effective. Dyspnea is treated (with or without invasive or non-invasive mechanical ventilation) by optimizing the underlying etiological condition, patient positioning and, sometimes, supplemental oxygen. Several oral interventions are recommended to alleviate thirst. Systematized improvement efforts addressing symptom management and assessment can be implemented in ICUs. Conclusions: Relief of symptom distress is a key component of critical care for all ICU patients, regardless of condition or prognosis. Evidence-based approaches for assessment and treatment together with well-designed work systems can help ensure comfort and related favorable outcomes for the critically ill

    Sistema de información de tráfico vehicular en rutas

    La presente publicación trata de un proyecto ya en curso que consiste en desarrollar el hardware y software de un sistema de información para la adquisición y análisis de datos de tráfico vehicular en rutas pavimentadas. El mismo se compone de varios subsistemas, entre ellos, el de adquisición de datos "in situ", el de transmisión inalámbrica y el de almacenamiento y procesamiento. Mediante sensores instalados en ruta, se toman datos sobre los vehículos que atraviesan una determinada arteria (sin interrupción del flujo vehicular), se analizan y procesan los datos y se los envía en forma remota a una central para la elaboración de informes estadísticos. Este tipo de tecnología será de gran importancia ya que permitirá caracterizar el flujo vehicular, permitiendo administrar y planificar el uso, mantenimiento y construcción de nuevas y mejores rutas, además de aportar herramientas para aumentar la seguridad en las mismas.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ
