Stereoselective reduction of imines with trichlorosilane using solid-supported chiral picolinamides
The stereoselective reduction of imines with trichlorosilane catalyzed by chiral Lewis bases is a well-established procedure for the synthesis of enantio-enriched amines. Five supported cinchona-based picolinamides have been prepared and their activity tested in a model reaction. The comparison of different supporting materials revealed that polystyrene gave better results than silica in terms of stereoselectivity. The applicability of the solid-supported catalyst of choice to the reduction of different imines was also demonstrated. Additionally, for the first time, a catalytic reactor containing a polymer-immobilized chiral picolinamide has been employed for the stereoselective reduction of imines with trichlorosilane under continuous flow conditions
Singular Scaling Functions in Clustering Phenomena
We study clustering in a stochastic system of particles sliding down a
fluctuating surface in one and two dimensions. In steady state, the
density-density correlation function is a scaling function of separation and
system size. This scaling function is singular for small argument -- it exhibits
a cusp singularity for particles with mutual exclusion, and a divergence for
noninteracting particles. The steady state is characterized by giant
fluctuations which do not damp down in the thermodynamic limit. The
autocorrelation function is a singular scaling function of time and system
size. The scaling properties are surprisingly similar to those for particles
moving in a quenched disordered environment that results if the surface is
frozen.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, Invited talk delivered at Statphys 23, Genova,

Obesity, inflammation, and insulin resistance
White adipose tissue (WAT) is considered an endocrine organ. When present in excess, WAT can influence metabolism via biologically active molecules. Following unregulated production of such molecules, adipose tissue dysfunction results, contributing to complications associated with obesity. Previous studies have implicated pro- and anti-inflammatory substances in the regulation of inflammatory response and in the development of insulin resistance. In obese individuals, pro-inflammatory molecules produced by adipose tissue contribute to the development of insulin resistance and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, the molecules with anti-inflammatory action, that have been associated with the improvement of insulin sensitivity, have your decreased production. Imbalance of these substances contributes significantly to metabolic disorders found in obese individuals. The current review aims to provide updated information regarding the activity of biomolecules produced by WAT
Extraction and bioanalysis of the ecotoxicologically relevant fraction of contaminants in sediments
Assessments of the risk connected to the contamination of soils and sediments should rely on a multidisciplinary approach based on both chemical and biological techniques (i.e., the sum of exposure and effects assessment). The dioxin-responsive, chemical-activated luciferase expression (DR-CALUX) bioassay is widely applied for evaluation of the toxicity of sediments after an exhaustive extraction of the contaminants, and results are used for risk assessment purposes. Approaches based on total extraction of contaminants do not take into account the importance of bioavailability and aging processes, thus leading to possible overestimations of risk. In the present work, an approach based on nonexhaustive extraction techniques in combination with an in vitro reporter gene assay was tested on sediment samples contaminated with dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and other xenobiotics. Tenax and hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin (HPCD) extractions over time were carried out to determine the bioavailable fractions, whereas the residual fractions were determined by means of a microwave-assisted exhaustive extraction. For both fractions, contaminant concentrations were quantified by gas chromatography¿mass spectrophotometry, and the toxic potency was determined by the DR-CALUX assay. Assessments of bioavailable fractions of PCBs by Tenax and HPCD gave comparable results and showed that after several years of aging, a considerable fraction (38¿70% of the total content for different PCBs) is still available and ecotoxicologically relevant. Coupling of nonexhaustive extraction and bioanalyses leads to a more realistic and, generally, much lower estimated risk for the toxicity of the extracts as compared to commonly adopted exhaustive techniques

Overview and prospects of the LBTI beyond the completed HOSTS survey
The Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI) combines the light from the two 8.4 m primary mirrors of the LBT for interferometry and adaptive optics (AO) imaging. With two high performance, state-of-the-art AO systems and adaptive secondary mirrors, a cryogenic instrument, and an edge-to-edge baseline of 23 m, the LBTI is a unique instrument for sensitive, high-angular resolution and high-contrast thermal infrared observations. After the successful completion of the NASA-funded HOSTS nulling interferometry survey for exozodiacal dust, our team is now completing the commissioning and extending the capabilities of other observing modes, namely Fizeau imaging interferometry, spectro-interferometry, integral field spectroscopy, non-redundant aperture masking, and coronagraphy for general astronomical observations. In this paper we briefly review the design of the LBTI, summarize the results and performance of HOSTS, and describe the LBTI's wider current and future capabilities. © COPYRIGHT SPIE.
