PROCESS OPTIMIZATION BY APPLYING THE RESPONSE SURFACE METHODOLOGY (RSM) TO THE ABRASIVE SUSPENSION WATER JET CUTTING OF PHENOLIC COMPOSITES

    Get PDF
The paper introduces the study on the cutting of the industrial composite phenolic resin, based on the thermoset materials reinforced with cotton cloth by the Abrasive Water Suspension Jet (AWSJ). The size reduction of abrasive grains during the formation of the jet and the erosion phenomenon are shown. The results of the machining process's critical factors as nozzle length, nozzle diameter, and abrasive mass flow rate on the maximal cutting depth, are indicated. To build a model of the process, the method of the response surface (RSM) was applied. The second-degree multinomial equation is selected for creating the cutting model. The research indicates the optimal control factors of the process, to achieve the best cutting depth performance

Feasibility study on the use of fractal analysis for evaluating the surface quality generated by waterjet

The paper presents the fractal analysis application for a simple evaluation of the quality of waterjet treated surfaces, especially after abrasive waterjet cutting. This analysis will enable the elimination of subjective assessments of treated surfaces. This will ensure a clear estimate of the quality of the surface and the ability to objectively compare the quality of the cutting edge obtained by using different cutting parameters

Abrasive waterjet machining of three-dimensional structures from bulk metallic glasses and comparison with other techniques

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are a promising class of engineering materials, but they can be difficult to machine due to high hardness and a metastable structure. Crystallization due to machining can have negative effects, such as a decreased load-bearing capacity of fabricated parts, and thus should be avoided. Here, a Zr-based BMG was machined using abrasive waterjet (AWJ), electrical discharge, ns-pulsed laser engraving, and conventional dry-milling techniques. Characterization of the processed material indicated that AWJ preserves the amorphous phase and provides the combination of speed and flexibility required to rapidly fabricate small three-dimensional parts, while the other techniques did not achieve these goals. As proof-of-principle, a screw, similar to an orthopedic implant, was rapidly machined from the BMG using AW

Experimental in-vitro bone cements disintegration with ultrasonic pulsating water jet for revision arthroplasty

The paper deals with the study of using the selective property of ultrasonic pulsating water jet for the disintegration of the interface created by bone cement between cemented femoral stem and trabecular bone tissue as a potential technique for revision arthroplasty. Six types of commercial bone cements based on Polymethyl Methacrylate were used for investigation. The cements were mixed using the DePuy - SmartMix (R) CTS / vacuum mixing bowl. Mechanical properties of hardened bone cements were determined by nanoindentation. The bone cement samples were disintegrated using the pulsating water jet technology. The water pressure varied between 8 divided by 20 MPa. A circular nozzle with an orifice diameter of 0,7 mm was used for water jetting. The stand-off distance from the target material was 2 mm and the traverse speed 1 mm/s. The volume of material removal and depth of created traces were measured by MicroProf FRT optical profilometer. The results positively support an assumption that pulsating water jet has a potential to be a suitable technique for the quick and safe disintegration of bone cement during revision arthroplasty

Optimizacija rezanja z abrazivnim vodnim curkom po metodi CODAS ob upoštevanju medsebojno odvisnih parametrov obdelave

The paper shows performance optimization effects of steel machining by abrasive water jet (AWJ). An innovative combinative distance-based assessment method (CODAS) is implemented for the optimization of cutting parameters like pump pressure, feed rate, and abrasive flow rate over cutting depth, and cut kerf surface roughness. The CODAS algorithm is among those based on measuring the distance between a scenario (in this case processing parameters in terms of performance and quality indicators) - and a certain benchmark. A benchmark is a specific hypothetical set of processing parameters devised or determined from available data. To determine the best set of process control parameters, a CODAS approach was performed with some weighting determinations. To set the initial parameters of the weights, it was proposed to calculate based on entropy weight method (EWM), that measures output value dispersion in cutting process. This technique simplifies multiple compound responses by preserving a single response
