Pilot Experiments with Electrodialysis and Ozonation for the Production of a Fertilizer from Urine

    Get PDF
Pilot tests were performed with a process combination of electrodialysis and ozonation for the removal of micropollutants and the concentration of nutrients in urine. In continuous and batch experiments, maximum concentration factors up to 3.5 and 4.1 were obtained, respectively. The desalination capacity did not decrease significantly during continuous operation periods of several weeks. Membrane cleaning after 195 days resulted in approximately 35% increase in desalination rate. The Yeast Estrogen Screen (YES), a bioassay that selectively detects oestrogenic compounds, confirmed that about 90% of the oestrogenic activity was removed by electrodialysis. HPLC analysis showed that ibuprofen was removed to a high extent, while other micropollutants were below the detection limit. In view of the fact that ibuprofen is among the most rapidly transported micropollutants in electrodialysis processes, this result indicates that electrodialysis provides an effective barrier for micropollutants. Standardised plant growth tests were performed in the field with the salt solution resulting from the treatment by electrodialysis and subsequent ozonation. The results show that the plant height is comparable to synthetic fertilisers, but the crop yield is slightly lower. The latter is probably caused by volatilisation losses during field application, which can be prevented by improved application technologies

    Melting of Polydisperse Hard Disks

The melting of a polydisperse hard disk system is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations in the semigrand canonical ensemble. This is done in the context of possible continuous melting by a dislocation unbinding mechanism, as an extension of the 2D hard disk melting problem. We find that while there is pronounced fractionation in polydispersity, the apparent density-polydispersity gap does not increase in width, contrary to 3D polydisperse hard spheres. The point where the Young's modulus is low enough for the dislocation unbinding to occur moves with the apparent melting point, but stays within the density gap, just like for the monodisperse hard disk system. Additionally, we find that throughout the accessible polydispersity range, the bound dislocation-pair concentration is high enough to affect the dislocation unbinding melting as predicted by Kosterlitz, Thouless, Halperin, Nelson and Young.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

Ultrafiltration (UF) has been proven to be very effective in the treatment of water for the removal of particles, colloids and microorganisms. However, household application of UF is limited due to membrane fouling which results in complex and maintenance-intensive UF systems

Critical role of metals in biochemical properties of xylose isomerase

    Get PDF
Improving the activity of xylose isomerase (XI) is highly desired for achieving efficient fermentation of xylose in lignocellulosic biomass using XI-expressing S. cerevisiae. XI is a metalloenzyme which requires two bivalent metals for its catalytic activity. The enzyme from Piromyces sp. E2 (PirXI)[1],[2] is activated with various metal ions including Mg2+, Mn2+, Ca2+, Co2+, Zn2+ and Fe2+. The biochemical properties of PirXI are dependent on the types of its metal cofactors. Moreover, the enzyme shows different affinities towards these metals. Characterization of these properties is critical for understanding the enzyme behavior in vivo and to further adapt the enzyme to the cytosolic metal environment. Recently, we have shown that altered intracellular metal composition can improve anaerobic growth of a xylose-fermenting strain by enhancing the activity of PirXI[3]. Furthermore, our current study on PirXI and other studies on different XIs have shown that it is also possible to change the metal preferences of the enzyme[4]. A PirXI variant with a single amino acid substitution in the proximity of the metal binding residues showed significant changes in metal preference compared to the wild-type PirXI. Further exploration on metal specificity of PirXI is necessary to optimize the in vivo enzyme activity. A phase I and pharmacokinetic study of the combination of capecitabine and docetaxel in patients with advanced solid tumours

    Get PDF
Capecitabine and docetaxel are both active against a variety of solid tumours, while their toxicity profiles only partly overlap. This phase I study was performed to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and side-effects of the combination, and to establish whether there is any pharmacokinetic interaction between the two compounds. Thirty-three patients were treated with capecitabine administered orally twice daily on days 1–14, and docetaxel given as a 1 h intravenous infusion on day 1. Treatment was repeated every 3 weeks. The dose of capecitabine ranged from 825 to 1250 mg m–2twice a day and of docetaxel from 75 to 100 mg m–2. The dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) was asthenia grade 2–3 at a dose of 1000 mg m–2bid of capecitabine combined with docetaxel 100 mg m–2. Neutropenia grade 3–4 was common (68% of courses), but complicated by fever in only 2.4% of courses. Other non-haematological toxicities were mild to moderate. There was no pharmacokinetic interaction between the two drugs. Tumour responses included two complete responses and three partial responses. Capecitabine 825 mg m–2twice a day plus docetaxel 100 mg m–2was tolerable, as was capecitabine 1250 mg m–2twice a day plus docetaxel 75 mg m–2. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig

Tackling Exascale Software Challenges in Molecular Dynamics Simulations with GROMACS

GROMACS is a widely used package for biomolecular simulation, and over the last two decades it has evolved from small-scale efficiency to advanced heterogeneous acceleration and multi-level parallelism targeting some of the largest supercomputers in the world. Here, we describe some of the ways we have been able to realize this through the use of parallelization on all levels, combined with a constant focus on absolute performance. Release 4.6 of GROMACS uses SIMD acceleration on a wide range of architectures, GPU offloading acceleration, and both OpenMP and MPI parallelism within and between nodes, respectively. The recent work on acceleration made it necessary to revisit the fundamental algorithms of molecular simulation, including the concept of neighborsearching, and we discuss the present and future challenges we see for exascale simulation - in particular a very fine-grained task parallelism. We also discuss the software management, code peer review and continuous integration testing required for a project of this complexity.Comment: EASC 2014 conference proceedin

This research has been supported by the Dragon 4 program funded by ESA (4000121469/17/I-NB), the Swiss National Science Foundation (grant nos. IZLCZ2_169979/1 and 200021E_177652/1) and the Strategic Priority Research Program of Chinese Academy of Sciences (grant no. XDA20100300).Meltwater from the cryosphere contributes a significant fraction of the freshwater resources in the countries receiving water from the Third Pole. Within the ESA-MOST Dragon 4 project, we addressed in particular changes of glaciers and proglacial lakes and their interaction. In addition, we investigated rock glaciers in permafrost environments. Here, we focus on the detailed investigations which have been performed in the Poiqu River Basin, central Himalaya. We used in particular multi-temporal stereo satellite imagery, including high-resolution 1960/70s Corona and Hexagon spy images and contemporary Pleiades data. Sentinel-2 data was applied to assess the glacier flow. The results reveal that glacier mass loss continuously increased with a mass budget of −0.42 ± 0.11 m w.e.a−1 for the period 2004–2018. The mass loss has been primarily driven by an increase in summer temperature and is further accelerated by proglacial lakes, which have become abundant. The glacial lake area more than doubled between 1964 and 2017. The termini of glaciers that flow into lakes moved on average twice as fast as glaciers terminating on land, indicating that dynamical thinning plays an important role. Rock glaciers are abundant, covering approximately 21 km2, which was more than 10% of the glacier area (approximately 190 km2) in 2015. With ongoing glacier wastage, rock glaciers can become an increasingly important water resource.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
