The development and variation of selected prepositional phrases in contemporary Czech

Disertační práce se zabývá dynamickými procesy v předložkovém systému současné češtiny. V úvodní části je představena motivace a struktura práce. Druhá část shrnuje různá pojetí slovního druhu předložek tradičně uváděná v české literatuře a charakteristické rysy obou hlavních podtypů této kategorie, tj. předložek primárních a sekundárních. U sekundárních předložek komentuje zejména prepozicializaci, tedy gramatikalizační proces jejich vzniku. Hlavní pozornost se zde upírá k významu: jaké rysy má význam u předložek jakožto funkčních lexémů a jaké významové rysy s sebou přinášejí předložky do větších celků. Těmito celky jsou z různých úhlů pohledu nejen spojení předložky a pádu a spojení valenční vycházející ze slovesného jádra, ale i prefigované tvary, v nichž se většina prefixů generuje právě z předložek primárních. Na hodnotu významu práce nahlíží zejména skrze kognitivní přístup ke zkoumání jazyka, sekundárně pak zmiňuje také postavení předložek v rámci tezí konstrukční gramatiky, která na ně pohlíží dvěma způsoby: jako na konstrukce samostatné i jako na součásti konstrukcí jiných. Třetí kapitola se zaměřuje na proces jazykové změny s ohledem právě na změny předložkového systému ve flektivním jazyce. V kontextu...This doctoral dissertation is concerned with the dynamic processes that are at play in the development of the system of prepositions in contemporary Czech. In the first part, I review different treatments of prepositions as a word class in the Czech linguistic tradition. I use available descriptive accounts to discuss the features of two main subtypes of this category, i.e. primary and secondary prepositions, focusing in particular on the process of 'prepositionalization' of secondary prepositions, i.e. the grammaticalization path that leads to their emergence. The primary focus of the first part of the dissertation is the role of meaning and the semantic features of prepositions as function words, as well as the meaning which prepositions contribute to more complex linguistic items, i.e. the interrelation of prepositions and case marking and valency patterns derived from verbs. I also draw attention to prefixed words which are, in the majority of cases, derived from primary prepositions. I approach meaning mainly from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, employing also the view of construction grammar which treats prepositions both as constructions in their own right and as parts of higher order constructions. The Dog in Linguistic Picture of the World in Czech

I. Abstract This paper is based on the theoretical principes of the Polish ethnolinguistic works introduced in the first part of this paper. We pay special attention to the theory of anthropocentrism of a natural language. The main focus of this theory is the differentiation between "one's own" and "human" on one side and "someone else's" and "non-human"on the other in a cognitive comprehension of the world. We further apply the anthropocentric approach to outline the conceptualization of domestic animals in the Czech language. The second part of the text deals with the expression pes (‚dog') in Czech and its derivatives, their position within the lexical system, their semantics, connotations and the stereotypes associated with them. The conclusion presents a cognitive definition of the concept pes (‚dog') in Czech. The definition builds upon the entry structure of the Polish Dictionary of Folk Stereotypes and Symbols

The Internet Language Reference Book

The ILRB has been created by two cooperating teams - by the team of the Institute of Czech Language, Czech Academy of Sciences and the team of the NLP Centre at the Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University (2004-2008). The tool consists of two sections: wordlist and reference (explanatory) one. Comments and remarks are welcome and should be send to the address [email protected]. 1. Wordlist section It contains more than 60 000 dictionary entries and is based on the glossary of the School Rules of Czech Orthography, the Dictionary of the Literary Czech and selected entries from the New Dictionary of Words of Foreign Origin and Dictionary of Neologisms. The entries typically include information that is asked about frequently by the users. Also inflectional forms of the particular words forms are offered in the form of tables thanks to the morphological analyzer ajka created at the Faculty of Informatics, MU. The dictionary part is linked to the explanatory one through the hypertext links. 2. Reference section It comprises the explanations about linguistic phenomena described in the Rules of Czech Orthography and contemporary Czech grammars, frequently and repeatedly asked by the users turning to the Linguistic Advisory Line in the Institute of Czech Language. In the offered explanations some typical spelling problems are dealt with including the appropriate recommendations.
