    Decay-assisted collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy: Application to neutron-deficient francium

    This paper reports on the hyperfine-structure and radioactive-decay studies of the neutron-deficient francium isotopes 202206^{202-206}Fr performed with the Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at the ISOLDE facility, CERN. The high resolution innate to collinear laser spectroscopy is combined with the high efficiency of ion detection to provide a highly-sensitive technique to probe the hyperfine structure of exotic isotopes. The technique of decay-assisted laser spectroscopy is presented, whereby the isomeric ion beam is deflected to a decay spectroscopy station for alpha-decay tagging of the hyperfine components. Here, we present the first hyperfine-structure measurements of the neutron-deficient francium isotopes 202206^{202-206}Fr, in addition to the identification of the low-lying states of 202,204^{202,204}Fr performed at the CRIS experiment.Comment: Accepted for publication with Physical Review

    Laser spectroscopy of francium isotopes at the borders of the region of reflection asymmetry

    The magnetic dipole moments and changes in mean-square charge radii of the neutron-rich 218m,219,229,231Fr^{218m,219,229,231}\text{Fr} isotopes were measured with the newly-installed Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) beam line at ISOLDE, CERN, probing the 7s 2S1/27s~^{2}S_{1/2} to 8p 2P3/28p~^{2}P_{3/2} atomic transition. The δr2A,221\delta\langle r^{2}\rangle^{A,221} values for 218m,219Fr^{218m,219}\text{Fr} and 229,231Fr^{229,231}\text{Fr} follow the observed increasing slope of the charge radii beyond N = 126N~=~126. The charge radii odd-even staggering in this neutron-rich region is discussed, showing that 220Fr^{220}\text{Fr} has a weakly inverted odd-even staggering while 228Fr^{228}\text{Fr} has normal staggering. This suggests that both isotopes reside at the borders of a region of inverted staggering, which has been associated with reflection-asymmetric shapes. The g(219Fr)=+0.69(1)g(^{219}\text{Fr}) = +0.69(1) value supports a π1h9/2\pi 1h_{9/2} shell model configuration for the ground state. The g(229,231Fr)g(^{229,231}\text{Fr}) values support the tentative Iπ(229,231Fr)=(1/2+)I^{\pi}(^{229,231}\text{Fr}) = (1/2^{+}) spin, and point to a πs1/21\pi s_{1/2}^{-1} intruder ground state configuration.Comment: Accepted for publication with Physical Review

    Mining and Visualizing Research Networks using the Artefact-Actor-Network Approach

In the context of scientific events and topical Research Networks, researchers use Social Media as one main communication channel. This raises the question, how to monitor and analyze such Research Networks. In this chapter we argue that Artefact-Actor-Networks (AANs) serve well for modeling, storing and mining the social interactions around digital learning resources originating from various learning services. In order to deepen the model of AANs and its application to Research Networks, a relevant theoretical background as well as clues for a prototypical reference implementation are provided. This is followed by the analysis of six Research Networks and a detailed inspection of the results. Moreover, selected networks are visualized. Research Networks of the same type show similar descriptive measures while different types are not directly comparable to each other. Further, our analysis shows that narrowness of a Research Network's subject area can be predicted using the connectedness of semantic similarity networks. Finally conclusions are drawn and implications for future research are discussed

    Designing assisted living technologies 'in the wild' : preliminary experiences with cultural probe methodology

    Background There is growing interest in assisted living technologies to support independence at home. Such technologies should ideally be designed ‘in the wild’ i.e. taking account of how real people live in real homes and communities. The ATHENE (Assistive Technologies for Healthy Living in Elders: Needs Assessment by Ethnography) project seeks to illuminate the living needs of older people and facilitate the co-production with older people of technologies and services. This paper describes the development of a cultural probe tool produced as part of the ATHENE project and how it was used to support home visit interviews with elders with a range of ethnic and social backgrounds, family circumstances, health conditions and assisted living needs. Method Thirty one people aged 60 to 98 were visited in their homes on three occasions. Following an initial interview, participants were given a set of cultural probe materials, including a digital camera and the ‘Home and Life Scrapbook’ to complete in their own time for one week. Activities within the Home and Life Scrapbook included maps (indicating their relationships to people, places and objects), lists (e.g. likes, dislikes, things they were concerned about, things they were comfortable with), wishes (things they wanted to change or improve), body outline (indicating symptoms or impairments), home plan (room layouts of their homes to indicate spaces and objects used) and a diary. After one week, the researcher and participant reviewed any digital photos taken and the content of the Home and Life Scrapbook as part of the home visit interview. Findings The cultural probe facilitated collection of visual, narrative and material data by older people, and appeared to generate high levels of engagement from some participants. However, others used the probe minimally or not at all for various reasons including limited literacy, physical problems (e.g. holding a pen), lack of time or energy, limited emotional or psychological resources, life events, and acute illness. Discussions between researchers and participants about the materials collected (and sometimes about what had prevented them completing the tasks) helped elicit further information relevant to assisted living technology design. The probe materials were particularly helpful when having conversations with non-English speaking participants through an interpreter. Conclusions Cultural probe methods can help build a rich picture of the lives and experiences of older people to facilitate the co-production of assisted living technologies. But their application may be constrained by the participant’s physical, mental and emotional capacity. They are most effective when used as a tool to facilitate communication and development of a deeper understanding of older people’s needs

    Longitudinal impact of changes in the residential built environment on physical activity: findings from the ENABLE London cohort study.

    BACKGROUND: Previous research has reported associations between features of the residential built environment and physical activity but these studies have mainly been cross-sectional, limiting inference. This paper examines whether changes in a range of residential built environment features are associated with changes in measures of physical activity in adults. It also explores whether observed effects are moderated by socio-economic status. METHODS: Data from the Examining Neighbourhood Activity in Built Living Environments in London (ENABLE London) study were used. A cohort of 1278 adults seeking to move into social, intermediate, and market-rent East Village accommodation was recruited in 2013-2015, and followed up after 2 years. Accelerometer-derived steps (primary outcome), and GIS-derived measures of residential walkability, park proximity and public transport accessibility were obtained both at baseline and follow-up. Daily steps at follow-up were regressed on daily steps at baseline, change in built environment exposures and confounding variables using multilevel linear regression to assess if changes in neighbourhood walkability, park proximity and public transport accessibility were associated with changes in daily steps. We also explored whether observed effects were moderated by housing tenure as a marker of socio-economic status. RESULTS: Between baseline and follow-up, participants experienced a 1.4 unit (95%CI 1.2,1.6) increase in neighbourhood walkability; a 270 m (95%CI 232,307) decrease in distance to their nearest park; and a 0.7 point (95% CI 0.6,0.9) increase in accessibility to public transport. A 1 s.d. increase in neighbourhood walkability was associated with an increase of 302 (95%CI 110,494) daily steps. A 1 s.d. increase in accessibility to public transport was not associated with any change in steps overall, but was associated with a decrease in daily steps amongst social housing seekers (- 295 steps (95%CI - 595, 3), and an increase in daily steps for market-rent housing seekers (410 95%CI -191, 1010) (P-value for effect modification = 0.03). CONCLUSION: Targeted changes in the residential built environment may result in increases in physical activity levels. However, the effect of improved accessibility to public transport may not be equitable, showing greater benefit to the more advantaged
