Integration of speech and gesture in aphasia
BACKGROUND: Information from speech and gesture is often integrated to comprehend a message. This integration process requires the appropriate allocation of cognitive resources to both the gesture and speech modalities. People with aphasia are likely to find integration of gesture and speech difficult. This is due to a reduction in cognitive resources, a difficulty with resource allocation or a combination of the two. Despite it being likely that people who have aphasia will have difficulty with integration, empirical evidence describing this difficulty is limited. Such a difficulty was found in a single case study by Cocks et al. in 2009, and is replicated here with a greater number of participants.
AIMS: To determine whether individuals with aphasia have difficulties understanding messages in which they have to integrate speech and gesture.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: Thirty-one participants with aphasia (PWA) and 30 control participants watched videos of an actor communicating a message in three different conditions: verbal only, gesture only, and verbal and gesture message combined. The message related to an action in which the name of the action (e.g., 'eat') was provided verbally and the manner of the action (e.g., hands in a position as though eating a burger) was provided gesturally. Participants then selected a picture that 'best matched' the message conveyed from a choice of four pictures which represented a gesture match only (G match), a verbal match only (V match), an integrated verbal-gesture match (Target) and an unrelated foil (UR). To determine the gain that participants obtained from integrating gesture and speech, a measure of multimodal gain (MMG) was calculated.
OUTCOMES & RESULTS: The PWA were less able to integrate gesture and speech than the control participants and had significantly lower MMG scores. When the PWA had difficulty integrating, they more frequently selected the verbal match.
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: The findings suggest that people with aphasia can have difficulty integrating speech and gesture in order to obtain meaning. Therefore, when encouraging communication partners to use gesture alongside language when communicating with people with aphasia, education regarding the types of gestures that would facilitate understanding is recommended

Oral iron exacerbates colitis and influences the intestinal microbiome
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with anaemia and oral iron replacement to correct this can be problematic, intensifying inflammation and tissue damage. The intestinal microbiota also plays a key role in the pathogenesis of IBD, and iron supplementation likely influences gut bacterial diversity in patients with IBD. Here, we assessed the impact of dietary iron, using chow diets containing either 100, 200 or 400 ppm, fed ad libitum to adult female C57BL/6 mice in the presence or absence of colitis induced using dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), on (i) clinical and histological severity of acute DSS-induced colitis, and (ii) faecal microbial diversity, as assessed by sequencing the V4 region of 16S rRNA. Increasing or decreasing dietary iron concentration from the standard 200 ppm exacerbated both clinical and histological severity of DSS-induced colitis. DSS-treated mice provided only half the standard levels of iron ad libitum (i.e. chow containing 100 ppm iron) lost more body weight than those receiving double the amount of standard iron (i.e. 400 ppm); p<0.01. Faecal calprotectin levels were significantly increased in the presence of colitis in those consuming 100 ppm iron at day 8 (5.94-fold) versus day-10 group (4.14-fold) (p<0.05), and for the 400 ppm day-8 group (8.17-fold) versus day-10 group (4.44-fold) (p<0.001). In the presence of colitis, dietary iron at 400 ppm resulted in a significant reduction in faecal abundance of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, and increase of Proteobacteria, changes which were not observed with lower dietary intake of iron at 100 ppm. Overall, altering dietary iron intake exacerbated DSS-induced colitis; increasing the iron content of the diet also led to changes in intestinal bacteria diversity and composition after colitis was induced with DSS
Raman Spectroscopy of Mott insulator states in optical lattices
We propose and analyse a Raman spectroscopy technique for probing the
properties of quantum degenerate bosons in the ground band of an optical
lattice. Our formalism describes excitations to higher vibrational bands and is
valid for deep lattices where a tight-binding approach can be applied to the
describe the initial state of the system. In sufficiently deep lattices,
localized states in higher vibrational bands play an important role in the
system response, and shifts in resonant frequency of excitation are sensitive
to the number of particles per site. We present numerical results of this
formalism applied to the case of a uniform lattice deep in the Mott insulator

AC-induced superfluidity
We argue that a system of ultracold bosonic atoms in a tilted optical lattice
can become superfluid in response to resonant AC forcing. Among others, this
allows one to prepare a Bose-Einstein condensate in a state associated with a
negative effective mass. Our reasoning is backed by both exact numerical
simulations for systems consisting of few particles, and by a theoretical

Spontaneous separation of two-component Fermi gases in a double-well trap
The two-component Fermi gas in a double-well trap is studied using the
density functional theory and the density profile of each component is
calculated within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We show that the two
components are spatially separate in the two wells once the repulsive
interaction exceeds the Stoner point, signaling the occurrence of the
ferromagnetic transition. Therefore, the double-well trap helps to explore
itinerant ferromagnetism in atomic Fermi gases, since the spontaneous

Hot and repulsive traffic flow
We study a message passing model, applicable also to traffic problems. The
model is implemented in a discrete lattice, where particles move towards their
destination, with fluctuations around the minimal distance path. A repulsive
interaction between particles is introduced in order to avoid the appearance of
traffic jam. We have studied the parameter space finding regions of fluid
traffic, and saturated ones, being separated by abrupt changes. The improvement
of the system performance is also explored, by the introduction of a
non-constant potential acting on the particles. Finally, we deal with the
