    New insights into the bioavailability of red raspberry anthocyanins and ellagitannins

    Red raspberries, containing ellagitannins and cyanidin-based anthocyanins, were fed to volunteers and metabolites appearing in plasma and urine were analysed by UHPLC-MS. Anthocyanins were not absorbed to any extent with sub nmol/L concentrations of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and a cyanidin-O-glucuronide appearing transiently in plasma. Anthocyanins excreted in urine corresponded to 0.007% of intake. More substantial amounts of phase II metabolites of ferulic acid and isoferulic acid, along with 4′-hydroxyhippuric acid, potentially originating from pH-mediated degradation of cyanidin in the proximal gastrointestinal tract, appeared in urine and also plasma where peak concentrations were attained 1–1.5 h after raspberry intake. Excretion of 18 anthocyanin-derived metabolites corresponded to 15.0% of intake, a figure substantially higher than obtained in other anthocyanin feeding studies. Ellagitannins pass from the small to the large intestine where the colonic microbiota mediate their conversion to urolithins A and B which appeared in plasma and were excreted almost exclusively as sulfate and glucuronide metabolites. The urolithin metabolites persisted in the circulatory system and were excreted in urine for much longer periods of time than the anthocyanin metabolites although their overall urinary recovery was lower at 7.0% of intake. It is events originating in the proximal and distal gastrointestinal tract, and subsequent phase II metabolism, that play an important role in the bioavailability of both anthocyanins and ellagitannins and it is their metabolites which appear in the circulatory system, that are key to elucidating the mode of action(s) underlying the protective effects of these compounds on human health

Penelitian tugas akhir ini mengkaji tentang Profil Wisatawan di Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui dari daerah mana saja wisatawan yang berkunjung ke Museum Radya Pustaka, bagaimana ciri-ciri wisatawan yang berkunjung ke Museum Radya Pustaka serta harapan-harapan yang diinginkan wisatawan terhadap Museum Radya Pustaka. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara dengan narasumber wisatawan yang berkujung di Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta tempat penulis melakukan penelitian, serta studi pustaka dan studi dokumen guna menambah sumber data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) Sebagian besar wisatawan yang datang berasal dari Semarang sebesar 32%. (2) Mayoritas wisatawan yang berkunjung ke Museum Radya Pustaka berusia antara 17-25 tahun dan kebanyakan dari mereka adalah pelajar atau mahasiswa dengan prosentase 52%. (3) Sebagian besar wisatawan yang datang ke Museum Radya Pustaka adalah bertujuan untuk melakukan penelitian yaitu sebesar 34%. (4) Harapan wisatawan yang berkunjung terhadap kelangsungan Museum Radya Pustaka sebagian besar adalah agar ditingkatkan lagi pengelolaan dan keamanan museum, agar kejadian hilangnya benda-benda koleksi museum tidak terulang lagi dikemudian hari. Kesimpulan dari hasil penelitian ini bahwa wisatawan yang berkujung ke Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta mayoritas berasal dari Semarang, mayoritas berusia 17-25 tahun dan kebanyakan dari mereka adalah berprofesi sebagai pelajar dan mahasiswa. Kebanyakan wisatawan yang datang bertujuan untuk melakukan penelitian, serta harapan wisatawan terhadap Museum Radya Pustaka adalah supaya lebih ditingkatkan lagi pengelolaan dan keamanan museum

    Adsorption dynamics of gases and vapors on the nanoporous metal organic framework material Ni-2(4,4 '-bipyridine)(3)(NO3)(4): guest modification of host sorption behavior

    This study combines measurements of the thermodynamics and kinetics of guest sorption with powder X-ray diffraction measurements of the nanoporous metal organic framework adsorbent (host) at different adsorptive (guest) loadings. The adsorption characteristics of nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and ethanol and methanol vapors on Ni2(4,4'-bipyridine)3(NO3)4 were studied over a range of temperatures as a function of pressure. Isotherm steps were observed for both carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide adsorption at approximately 10-20% of the total pore volume and at approximately 70% of total pore volume for methanol adsorption. The adsorption kinetics obey a linear driving force (LDF) mass transfer model for adsorption at low surface coverage. At high surface coverage, both methanol and ethanol adsorption follow a combined barrier resistance/diffusion model. The rates of adsorption in the region of both the carbon dioxide and methanol isotherm steps were significantly slower than those observed either before or after the step. X-ray diffraction studies at various methanol loadings showed that the host structure disordered initially but underwent a structural change in the region of the isotherm step. These isotherm steps are ascribed to discrete structural changes in the host adsorbent that are induced by adsorption on different sites. Isotherm steps were not observed for ethanol adsorption, which followed a Langmuir isotherm. Previous X-ray crystallography studies have shown that all the sites are equivalent for ethanol adsorption on Ni2(4,4'-bipyridine)3(NO3)4, with the host structure undergoing a scissoring motion and the space group remaining unchanged during adsorption. The activation energies and preexponential factors for methanol and ethanol adsorption were calculated for each pressure increment at which the linear driving force model was obeyed. There was a good correlation between activation energy and ln(preexponential factor), indicating a compensation effect. The results are discussed in terms of reversible adsorbate/adsorbent (guest/host) structural changes and interactions and the adsorption mechanism. The paper contains the first evidence of specific interactions between guests and functional groups leading to structural change in flexible porous coordination polymer frameworks

    Mood, mileage and the menstrual cycle

    Forty women took part in a study to determine the effects of high-intensity training and the menstrual cycle on mood states. Half of the sample were competitive distance runners following a training load of between 50 km and 130 km running per week. Seven athletes were amenorrhoeic and 13 either eumenorrhoeic or oligomenorrhoeic. The remaining 20 subjects were inactive women who menstruated regularly. The mean age of all 40 subjects was 29 years. Each subject completed two identical Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaires. The 33 menstruating subjects completed both a premenstrual and a midcycle form and the amenorrhoeic athletes completed the questionnaires at a 3-week interval, which acted as a control for the potential effects of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) among the menstruating females. Results showed highly significant differences in mood profiles among amenorrhoeic athletes, non-amenorrhoeic athletes and inactive women. The greatest difference was between premenstrual and midcycle measures for the inactive group. PMS appears to cause marked negative mood swings among menstruating women which the POMS inventory is sensitive in detecting. While the lowerintensity- training runners appeared to benefit psychologically from a training distance of approximately 50km week-', high-intensity training had an adverse effect on mood
