Avoiding space robot collisions utilizing the NASA/GSFC tri-mode skin sensor
A capacitance based proximity sensor, the 'Capaciflector' (Vranish 92), has been developed at the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA. We had investigated the use of this sensor for avoiding and maneuvering around unexpected objects (Mahalingam 92). The approach developed there would help in executing collision-free gross motions. Another important aspect of robot motion planning is fine motion planning. Let us classify manipulator robot motion planning into two groups at the task level: gross motion planning and fine motion planning. We use the term 'gross planning' where the major degrees of freedom of the robot execute large motions, for example, the motion of a robot in a pick and place type operation. We use the term 'fine motion' to indicate motions of the robot where the large dofs do not move much, and move far less than the mirror dofs, such as in inserting a peg in a hole. In this report we describe our experiments and experiences in this area
Quantized spin excitations in a ferromagnetic microstrip from microwave photovoltage measurements
Quantized spin excitations in a single ferromagnetic microstrip have been
measured using the microwave photovoltage technique. Several kinds of spin wave
modes due to different contributions of the dipole-dipole and the exchange
interactions are observed. Among them are a series of distinct dipole-exchange
spin wave modes, which allow us to determine precisely the subtle spin boundary
condition. A comprehensive picture for quantized spin excitations in a
ferromagnet with finite size is thereby established. The dispersions of the
quantized spin wave modes have two different branches separated by the
saturation magnetization.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Transport spin polarization of Ni_xFe_{1-x}: electronic kinematics and band structure
We present measurements of the transport spin polarization of Ni_xFe_{1-x}
(0<x<1) using the recently-developed Point Contact Andreev Reflection
technique, and compare them with our first principles calculations of the spin
polarization for this system. Surpisingly, the measured spin polarization is
almost composition-independent. The results clearly demonstrate that the sign
of the transport spin polarization does not coincide with that of the
difference of the densities of states at the Fermi level. Calculations indicate
that the independence of the spin polarization of the composition is due to
compensation of density of states and Fermi velocity in the s- and d- bands
Spin diffusion in doped semiconductors
The behavior of spin diffusion in doped semiconductors is shown to be
qualitatively different than in undoped (intrinsic) ones. Whereas a spin packet
in an intrinsic semiconductor must be a multiple-band disturbance, involving
inhomogeneous distributions of both electrons and holes, in a doped
semiconductor a single-band disturbance is possible. For n-doped nonmagnetic
semiconductors the enhancement of diffusion due to a degenerate electron sea in
the conduction band is much larger for these single-band spin packets than for
charge packets, and can exceed an order of magnitude at low temperatures even
for equilibrium dopings as small as 10^16 cm^-3. In n-doped ferromagnetic and
semimagnetic semiconductors the motion of spin packets polarized antiparallel
to the equilibrium carrier spin polarization is predicted to be an order of
magnitude faster than for parallel polarized spin packets. These results are
reversed for p-doped semiconductors.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Localized inhibition of protein phosphatase 1 by NUAK1 promotes spliceosome activity and reveals a MYC-sensitive feedback control of transcription.
Deregulated expression of MYC induces a dependence on the NUAK1 kinase, but the molecular mechanisms underlying this dependence have not been fully clarified. Here, we show that NUAK1 is a predominantly nuclear protein that associates with a network of nuclear protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) interactors and that PNUTS, a nuclear regulatory subunit of PP1, is phosphorylated by NUAK1. Both NUAK1 and PNUTS associate with the splicing machinery. Inhibition of NUAK1 abolishes chromatin association of PNUTS, reduces spliceosome activity, and suppresses nascent RNA synthesis. Activation of MYC does not bypass the requirement for NUAK1 for spliceosome activity but significantly attenuates transcription inhibition. Consequently, NUAK1 inhibition in MYC-transformed cells induces global accumulation of RNAPII both at the pause site and at the first exon-intron boundary but does not increase mRNA synthesis. We suggest that NUAK1 inhibition in the presence of deregulated MYC traps non-productive RNAPII because of the absence of correctly assembled spliceosomes
Longitudinal spin transport in diluted magnetic semiconductor superlattices: the effect of the giant Zeeman splitting
Longitudinal spin transport in diluted magnetic semiconductor superlattices
is investigated theoretically. The longitudinal magnetoconductivity (MC) in
such systems exhibits an oscillating behavior as function of an external
magnetic field. In the weak magnetic field region the giant Zeeman splitting
plays a dominant role which leads to a large negative magnetoconductivity. In
the strong magnetic field region the MC exhibits deep dips with increasing
magnetic field. The oscillating behavior is attributed to the interplay between
the discrete Landau levels and the Fermi surface. The decrease of the MC at low
magnetic field is caused by the exchange interaction between the electron
in the conduction band and the magnetic ions.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Oscillating magnetoresistance in diluted magnetic semiconductor barrier structures
Ballistic spin polarized transport through diluted magnetic semiconductor
(DMS) single and double barrier structures is investigated theoretically using
a two-component model. The tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of the system
exhibits oscillating behavior when the magnetic field are varied. An
interesting beat pattern in the TMR and spin polarization is found for
different NMS/DMS double barrier structures which arises from an interplay
between the spin-up and spin-down electron channels which are splitted by the
s-d exchange interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Co-ordination between Rashba spin-orbital interaction and space charge effect and enhanced spin injection into semiconductors
We consider the effect of the Rashba spin-orbital interaction and space
charge in a ferromagnet-insulator/semiconductor/insulator-ferromagnet junction
where the spin current is severely affected by the doping, band structure and
charge screening in the semiconductor. In diffusion region, if the the
resistance of the tunneling barriers is comparable to the semiconductor
resistance, the magnetoresistance of this junction can be greatly enhanced
under appropriate doping by the co-ordination between the Rashba effect and
screened Coulomb interaction in the nonequilibrium transport processes within
Hartree approximation.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Ground-state energy and spin in disordered quantum dots
We investigate the ground-state energy and spin of disordered quantum dots
using spin-density-functional theory. Fluctuations of addition energies
(Coulomb-blockade peak spacings) do not scale with average addition energy but
remain proportional to level spacing. With increasing interaction strength, the
even-odd alternation of addition energies disappears, and the probability of
non-minimal spin increases, but never exceeds 50%. Within a two-orbital model,
we show that the off-diagonal Coulomb matrix elements help stabilize a ground
state of minimal spin.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Theory of Magnetic Properties and Spin-Wave Dispersion for Ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As
We present a microscopic theory of the long-wavelength magnetic properties of
the ferromagnetic diluted magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. Details of the host
semiconductor band structure, described by a six-band Kohn-Luttinger
Hamiltonian, are taken into account. We relate our quantum-mechanical
calculation to the classical micromagnetic energy functional and determine
anisotropy energies and exchange constants. We find that the exchange constant
is substantially enhanced compared to the case of a parabolic heavy-hole-band
model.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
