    Modeling a Slicer Mirror Using Zemax User-Defined Surface

    A slicer mirror is a complex surface composed by many tilted and decentered mirrors sub-surfaces. The major difficulty to model such a complex surface is the large number of parameters used to define it. The Zemax's multi-configuration mode is usually used to specify each parameters (tilts, curvatures, decenters) for each mirror sub-surface which are then considered independently. Otherwise making use of the User-Defined Surface (UDS-DLL) Zemax capability, we are able to consider the set of sub-surfaces as a whole surface. In this paper, we present such a UDS-DLL tool comparing its performance with those of the classical multi-configuration mode. In particular, we explore the use of UDS-DLL to investigate the cross-talk due to the diffraction on the slicer array mirrors which has been a burden task when using multi-configuration mode.Comment: Submitted to the proceedings of the Durham Integral Field Spectroscopy Workshop July 4th-8th 200

    Chemical Abundances from the Continuum

    The calculation of solar absolute fluxes in the near-UV is revisited, discussing in some detail recent updates in theoretical calculations of bound-free opacity from metals. Modest changes in the abundances of elements such as Mg and the iron-peak elements have a significant impact on the atmospheric structure, and therefore self-consistent calculations are necessary. With small adjustments to the solar photospheric composition, we are able to reproduce fairly well the observed solar fluxes between 200 and 270 nm, and between 300 and 420 nm, but find too much absorption in the 270-290 nm window. A comparison between our reference 1D model and a 3D time-dependent hydrodynamical simulation indicates that the continuum flux is only weakly sensitive to 3D effects, with corrections reaching <10% in the near-UV, and <2% in the optical.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the conference A Stellar Journey, a symposium in celebration of Bengt Gustafsson's 65th birthday, June 23-27, 2008, Uppsal

    Extended Coronal Emission Lines in Active Galactic Nuclei

    VLT and NTT spectra are used to examine the nuclear and extended coronal line emission in a sample of well-known Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies. The excellent spatial resolution obtained with VLT allowed us to map [SiVI] 1.963 μ\mum and [SiVII] 2.48 μ\mum on scales of up to 20 pc. Coronal line emission, extended to distances of ∼\sim100 pc, is detected in some of the lines analyzed, particularly in [FeX] 6374\AA, [FeXI] 7891\AA, and [SiVII] 2.48μ\mum. Most coronal lines are strongly asymmetric towards the blue and broader than low-ionization lines. This result is particularly important for Circinus, where previous observations had failed at detecting larger widths for high-ionization lines. Photoionization models are used to investigate the physical conditions and continuum luminosities necessary to produced the observed coronal emission.     In-Situ Particle Acceleration in Extragalactic Radio Hot Spots: Observations Meet Expectations

    We discuss, in terms of particle acceleration, the results from optical VLT observations of hot spots associated with radio galaxies. On the basis of observational and theoretical grounds, it is shown that: 1. relatively low radio-radio power hot spots are the optimum candidates for being detected at optical waves. This is supported by an unprecedented optical detection rate of 70% out of a sample of low radio power hot spots. 2. the shape of the synchrotron spectrum of hot spots is mainly determined by the strength of the magnetic field in the region. In particular, the break frequency, related to the age of the oldest electrons in the hot spots, is found to increase with decreasing synchrotron power and magnetic field strength.     Prospects for transient gravitational waves at r-mode frequencies associated with pulsar glitches

    t Glitches in pulsars are likely to trigger oscillation modes in the fluid interior of neutron stars. We examined these oscillations specifically at r-mode frequencies. The excited r-modes will emit gravitational waves and can have long damping time scales (minutes - days). We use simple estimates of how much energy the glitch might put into the r-mode and assess the detectability of the emitted gravitational waves with future interferometers

Scientific Reports, 10(1), (2020): 3610, doi:10.1038/s41598-020-60441-4.Several seamounts have been identified as hotspots of marine life in the Azores, acting as feeding stations for top predators, including cetaceans. Passive acoustic monitoring is an efficient tool to study temporal variations in the occurrence and behaviour of vocalizing cetacean species. We deployed bottom-moored Ecological Acoustic Recorders (EARs) to investigate the temporal patterns in acoustic presence and foraging activity of oceanic dolphins at two seamounts (Condor and Gigante) in the Azores. Data were collected in March–May 2008 and April 2010–February 2011. Dolphins were present year round and nearly every day at both seamounts. Foraging signals (buzzes and bray calls) were recorded in >87% of the days dolphin were present. There was a strong diel pattern in dolphin acoustic occurrence and behaviour, with higher detections of foraging and echolocation vocalizations during the night and of social signals during daylight hours. Acoustic data demonstrate that small dolphins consistently use Condor and Gigante seamounts to forage at night. These results suggest that these seamounts likely are important feeding areas for dolphins.
