    Insect Resistance Management for Bt Corn : An Assessment of Community Refuge Schemes

    Because of Bt corn's efficacy in controlling European corn borer, farmers are required to implement an insect resistance management (IRM) program that constrains each farmer to plant no more than 80% of the farm s corn to Bt varieties. This refuge must be planted within a half-mile of Bt corn and must be contained on the same farm. Community refuge schemes, those which allow the refuge area to be planted on a neighboring farm, have been proposed. In this analysis, we estimate the potential gains to all farms in the community in two representative locations: Pennsylvania and Iowa. The results of a decision analysis model show that the potential gains are very small; the greatest is only 652overa2000acrecommunity(652 over a 2000-acre community (0.33 per acre). This gain would almost certainly be offset by the costs of developing such a community.Includes bibliographical reference

    Direct search methods for nonlinearly constrained optimization using filters and frames

    Abstract. A direct search method for nonlinear optimization problems with nonlinear inequality constraints is presented. A filter based approach is used, which allows infeasible starting points. The constraints are assumed to be continuously differentiable, and approximations to the constraint gradients are used. For simplicity it is assumed that the active constraint normals are linearly independent at all points of interest on the boundary of the feasible region. An infinite sequence of iterates is generated, some of which are surrounded by sets of points called bent frames. An infinite subsequence of these iterates is identified, and its convergence properties are studied by applying Clarke's non-smooth calculus to the bent frames. It is shown that each cluster point of this subsequence is a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker point of the optimization problem under mild conditions which include strict differentiability of the objective function at each cluster point. This permits the objective function to be non-smooth, infinite, or undefined away from these cluster points. When the objective function is only locally Lipschitz at these cluster points it is shown that certain directions still have interesting properties at these cluster points

    Photoproduction of phi(1020) mesons on the proton at large momentum transfer

    The cross section for ϕ\phi meson photoproduction on the proton has been measured for the first time up to a four-momentum transfer -t = 4 GeV^2, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. At low four-momentum transfer, the differential cross section is well described by Pomeron exchange. At large four-momentum transfer, above -t = 1.8 GeV^2, the data support a model where the Pomeron is resolved into its simplest component, two gluons, which may couple to any quark in the proton and in the ϕ\phi.Comment: 5 pages; 7 figure

    Overlapping promoter targeting by Elk-1 and other divergent ETS-domain transcription factor family members

    ETS-domain transcription factors play important roles in controlling gene expression in a variety of different contexts; however, these proteins bind to very similar sites and it is unclear how in vivo specificity is achieved. In silico analysis is unlikely to reveal specific targets for individual family members and direct experimental approaches are therefore required. Here, we take advantage of an inducible dominant-negative expression system to identify a group of novel target genes for the ETS-domain transcription factor Elk-1. Elk-1 is thought to mainly function through cooperation with a second transcription factor SRF, but the targets we identify are largely SRF-independent. Furthermore, we demonstrate that there is a high degree of overlapping, cell type-specific, target gene binding by Elk-1 and other ETS-domain transcription factors. Our results are therefore consistent with the notion that there is a high degree of functional redundancy in target gene regulation by ETS-domain transcription factors in addition to the specific target gene regulation that can be dictated through heterotypic interactions exemplified by the Elk-1-SRF complex

    Genomic Expansion of Magnetotactic Bacteria Reveals an Early Common Origin of Magnetotaxis with Lineage-specific Evolution

    The origin and evolution of magnetoreception, which in diverse prokaryotes and protozoa is known as magnetotaxis and enables these microorganisms to detect Earth’s magnetic field for orientation and navigation, is not well understood in evolutionary biology. The only known prokaryotes capable of sensing the geomagnetic field are magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), motile microorganisms that biomineralize intracellular, membrane-bounded magnetic single-domain crystals of either magnetite (Fe3O4) or greigite (Fe3S4) called magnetosomes. Magnetosomes are responsible for magnetotaxis in MTB. Here we report the first large-scale metagenomic survey of MTB from both northern and southern hemispheres combined with 28 genomes from uncultivated MTB. These genomes expand greatly the coverage of MTB in the Proteobacteria, Nitrospirae, and Omnitrophica phyla, and provide the first genomic evidence of MTB belonging to the Zetaproteobacteria and “Candidatus Lambdaproteobacteria” classes. The gene content and organization of magnetosome gene clusters, which are physically grouped genes that encode proteins for magnetosome biosynthesis and organization, are more conserved within phylogenetically similar groups than between different taxonomic lineages. Moreover, the phylogenies of core magnetosome proteins form monophyletic clades. Together, these results suggest a common ancient origin of iron-based (Fe3O4 and Fe3S4) magnetotaxis in the domain Bacteria that underwent lineage-specific evolution, shedding new light on the origin and evolution of biomineralization and magnetotaxis, and expanding significantly the phylogenomic representation of MTB

    Q2Q^2 Dependence of Quadrupole Strength in the γpΔ+(1232)pπ0\gamma^*p\to\Delta^+(1232)\to p \pi^0 Transition

    Models of baryon structure predict a small quadrupole deformation of the nucleon due to residual tensor forces between quarks or distortions from the pion cloud. Sensitivity to quark versus pion degrees of freedom occurs through the Q2Q^2 dependence of the magnetic (M1+M_{1+}), electric (E1+E_{1+}), and scalar (S1+S_{1+}) multipoles in the γpΔ+pπ0\gamma^* p \to \Delta^+ \to p \pi^0 transition. We report new experimental values for the ratios E1+/M1+E_{1+}/M_{1+} and S1+/M1+S_{1+}/M_{1+} over the range Q2Q^2= 0.4-1.8 GeV2^2, extracted from precision p(e,ep)πp(e,e 'p)\pi^{\circ} data using a truncated multipole expansion.     The e p -> e' p eta reaction at and above the S11(1535) baryon resonance

    New cross sections for the reaction e p -> ep eta are reported for total center of mass energy W = 1.5--1.86 GeV and invariant momentum transfer Q^2 = 0.25--1.5 GeV^2. This large kinematic range allows extraction of important new information about response functions, photocouplings, and eta N coupling strengths of baryon resonances. Expanded W coverage shows sharp structure at W \~ 1.7 GeV; this is shown to come from interference between S and P waves and can be interpreted in terms of known resonances. Improved values are derived for the photon coupling amplitude for the S11(1535) resonance.Comment: 11 pages, RevTeX, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    The Microbial Communities in Male First Catch Urine Are Highly Similar to Those in Paired Urethral Swab Specimens

    Urine is the CDC-recommended specimen for STI testing. It was unknown if the bacterial communities (microbiomes) in urine reflected those in the distal male urethra. We compared microbiomes of 32 paired urine and urethral swab specimens obtained from adult men attending an STD clinic, by 16S rRNA PCR and deep pyrosequencing. Microbiomes of urine and swabs were remarkably similar, regardless of STI status of the subjects. Thus, urine can be used to characterize urethral microbiomes when swabs are undesirable, such as in population-based studies of the urethral microbiome or where multiple sampling of participants is required
