Smoothed Particle Magnetohydrodynamics (some shocking results...)
There have been some issues in the past in attempts to simulate magnetic
fields using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. SPH is well
suited to star formation problems because of its Lagrangian nature. We present
new, stable and conservative methods for magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in SPH and
present numerical tests on both waves and shocks in one dimension to show that
it gives robust and accurate results.Comment: Kluwer latex, 6 pages, 3 figures; Proceedings of the International

The Eschatology of the Dead Sea Scrolls
The Dead Sea sect represents a unique view of Second Temple Judaism at an important juncture with the beginning of Jewish Christianity. A study of the eschatological views of the sect provides an historical and theological background for comparison with the views of Jesus and of early Jewish Christianity recorded in the New Testament. It further illustrates why Jewish eschatology should be a course of study within Jewish Studies and New Testament studies
The Health Crisis for CHA Families
Outlines a study of long-term trends in the health status of Chicago's distressed public housing residents, including chronic illness, disability, mortality rates, and anxiety. Examines limited effects of moving to better housing and their implications

Open plan and academe: pre- and post-hoc conversations
There now exists a strong body of evidence that creative workplaces can, in certain circumstances, exert beneficial influences on organisational cultures and outputs. Academia tends to resist such spaces and faculty buildings. The reasons are explored but the reactions of staff are not found to be different from those reported in the literature on general creative spaces. The success or failure of team oriented workspaces is in large part a socially constructed perception influenced by the manner of implementation and management. As elsewhere new workplaces are about new conversations. The cases studied lead to a model of the tensions inherent in workplace redesign.</p
Analysis of some methods for obtaining sea surface temperature from satellite observations
Satellite measurements of sea surface temperature must be corrected for atmospheric moisture, cloud contamination, reflected solar radiation and other sources of error. Procedures for reducing errors are discussed. It appears that routine accuracies of 1 C are possible, given low noise spectral measurements in the infrared
The nature of multiple solutions for surface wind speed over the oceans from scatterometer measurements
The satellite SEASAT-A will carry a radar scatterometer in order to measure microwave backscatter from the sea surface. From pairs of radar measurements at angles separated by 90 deg in azimuth the surface wind speed and direction may be inferred, though not uniquely. The character of the solutions for wind speed and direction is displayed, as well as the nature of the ambiguities of these solutions. An economical procedure for handling such data is described, plus a criterion for the need for conventional (surface) data in order to resolve the ambiguities of solutions
A solution to the overdamping problem when simulating dust-gas mixtures with smoothed particle hydrodynamics
We present a fix to the overdamping problem found by Laibe & Price (2012)
when simulating strongly coupled dust-gas mixtures using two different sets of
particles using smoothed particle hydrodynamics. Our solution is to compute the
drag at the barycentre between gas and dust particle pairs when computing the
drag force by reconstructing the velocity field, similar to the procedure in
Godunov-type solvers. This fixes the overdamping problem at negligible
computational cost, but with additional memory required to store velocity
derivatives. We employ slope limiters to avoid spurious oscillations at shocks,
finding the van Leer Monotonized Central limiter most effective.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted to MNRA
