Universal quantum information compression and degrees of prior knowledge
We describe a universal information compression scheme that compresses any
pure quantum i.i.d. source asymptotically to its von Neumann entropy, with no
prior knowledge of the structure of the source. We introduce a diagonalisation
procedure that enables any classical compression algorithm to be utilised in a
quantum context. Our scheme is then based on the corresponding quantum
translation of the classical Lempel-Ziv algorithm. Our methods lead to a
conceptually simple way of estimating the entropy of a source in terms of the
measurement of an associated length parameter while maintaining high fidelity
for long blocks. As a by-product we also estimate the eigenbasis of the source.
Since our scheme is based on the Lempel-Ziv method, it can be applied also to
target sequences that are not i.i.d.Comment: 17 pages, no figures. A preliminary version of this work was

Investigating A State-Funded Disciplinary Literacy Program In Kentucky For Educators Of Adolescent Students
This case study describes a professional learning opportunity for educators of adolescents, namely the Literacy for Adolescent Teachers (LAT), at a regional midsize university in Kentucky. The LAT is a year-long experience that enrollees undertake to grow professionally by gaining specific literacy skills. This study focuses specifically on participant experience with the disciplinary literacy content, strategies, and resources presented at the summer program. This investigation sought to understand if participation in the disciplinary literacy program impacted the participants’ perceptions of literacy and their dispositional attitudes toward integrating literacy into their professional practice. The data revealed that participants in the LAT joined the program with a text-based perception of literacy, which also impacted how they viewed the integration of literacy in their practice. By the end of the program, the participants gained a broader perception of literacy, which shifted their understanding of how literacy was integrated into their instruction
Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy for Perinatal Women at Risk for Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a lifelong diagnosis with high morbidity. The perinatal period represents a high-risk interval for conversion to bipolar disorder, thought to be amplified by the destabilizing effects of sleep and daily rhythm disruption. Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, an effective adjunctive treatment for bipolar disorder, also shows promise as an intervention for adolescents at familial risk for bipolar disorder; however, it has not been evaluated in at-risk perinatal women. Utilizing a randomized control trial, we will investigate the benefit of interpersonal and social rhythm therapy in reducing symptom burden among perinatal women at risk for bipolar disorder. We hypothesize that women receiving our intervention will spend, on average, more weeks symptom-free compared to enhanced treatment-as-usual. This study addresses the current lack of clinical options in pregnancy for women at risk for bipolar disorder and may elucidate methods to moderate or prevent the morbidity associated with new diagnosis

Local Law Enforcement\u27s Counter Terrorism Capabilities.
The purpose of this study was to analyze local law enforcement\u27s counter-terrorism capabilities as it relates to the varying size of United States local law enforcement agencies. Data for the study came from a study entitled Impact of Terrorism on State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies and Criminal Justice Systems in the United States, 2004 . Statistical analysis revealed that there are large disparities in the allocation of resources to intelligence gathering, analyzing, and sharing between smaller local law enforcement agencies and their larger counterparts. Furthermore, smaller agencies are not interacting with federal agencies in a manner consistent with the interactions between larger agencies and federal authorities. However, the study did reveal officers in smaller local law enforcement agencies have undertaken the duties of homeland security on a level commensurate with those in larger local law enforcement agencies
