Tucked away in the bogs and swamps of Wisconsin, and in similar habitats throughout the world, thrive a myriad of unicellular plants known as Desmids. They are among the most aesthetic of all microorganisms and vie with the glassywalled Diatoms as Jewel Plants. If it were not for the inquisitive biologist and the students of the microscopic cosmos, Desmids well might exist unnoticed. For although they have highly intriguing biological features they play no role in water spoilage problems, nor are they important in the food cycle of aquatic animals. Hence they do not attract attention nor invite the condemnations that are directed toward some other groups of algae such as the blue-greens
A Brief Summary of Work on Iowa Algae
My part in the taxonomic survey of the algal flora of Iowa began in the fall of 1924. It may be of interest at this time to summarize briefly the work done on the algae of Iowa, including my unpublished notes

NOTES ON INDONESIAN FRESHWATER ALGAE - IV. Concerning Euastrum moebii (Borge) Scott & Prescott comb. nov. and Euastrum turgidum Wallich.
The desmid presently known as Mierasterias moebii (Borge) West & West is transferred back to the genus Euastrum where it was originally placed by its discoverer, together with its several varieties, for reasons that are discussed in detail. There are described one new variety, var. diplocanthylum from Australia, and one new forma, var. tetrachastriforme fa. latum from Borneo. New illustrations are given for Euastrum, turgidum Wall., and criteria are suggested for differentiating this plant from the closely similar E. moebii
Parity violating pion electroproduction off the nucleon
Parity violating (PV) contributions due to interference between and
exchange are calculated for pion electroproduction off the nucleon. A
phenomenological model with effective Lagrangians is used to determine the
resulting asymmetry for the energy region between threshold and
resonance. The resonance is treated as a Rarita-Schwinger field with
phenomenological transition currents. The background contributions
are given by the usual Born terms using the pseudovector Lagrangian.

Additions and Confirmations to the Algal Flora of Itasca State Park I. Desmids and Diatoms from North Deming Pond
The summer desmid and diatom flora of North Deming Pond in lake Itasca State Park is presented. One hundred sixty desmid taxa representing 23 genera are recorded. Of these, 15 taxa appear to be park records and 82 are apparently Minnesota records. The desmid genera, Closterium, Cosmarium, Euastrum, Micrasterias, Pleurotaenium, and Staurastrum display the most taxa. The 136 diatom taxa recorded represent 27 genera. More than half of the taxa are assignable to the genera Eunotia, Navicula, Neidium, and Pinnularia. Given the brief and cursory nature of this study, the taxomic representation of these algae indicates high species richness and diversity in the Itasca Park area and suggests the need for further taxonomic inventory
