Strong uniqueness for stochastic evolution equations with unbounded measurable drift term
We consider stochastic evolution equations in Hilbert spaces with merely
measurable and locally bounded drift term and cylindrical Wiener noise. We
prove pathwise (hence strong) uniqueness in the class of global solutions. This
paper extends our previous paper (Da Prato, Flandoli, Priola and M. Rockner,
Annals of Prob., published online in 2012) which generalized Veretennikov's
fundamental result to infinite dimensions assuming boundedness of the drift
term. As in our previous paper pathwise uniqueness holds for a large class, but
not for every initial condition. We also include an application of our result
to prove existence of strong solutions when the drift is only measurable,
locally bounded and grows more than linearly.Comment: The paper will be published in Journal of Theoretical Probability.

The Double-Lined Spectroscopic Binary Haro 1-14c
We report detection of the low-mass secondary in the spectroscopic binary
Haro 1-14c in the Ophiuchus star forming region. The secondary/primary mass
ratio is . With an estimated photometric primary mass of 1.2
, the secondary mass is and the projected
semi-major axis is AU. The system is well-suited for astrometric
mapping of its orbit with the current generation of ground-based IR
interferometers. This could yield precision values of the system's component
masses and distance.Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letter

The GL 569 Multiple System
We report the results of high spectral and angular resolution infrared
observations of the multiple system GL 569 A and B that were intended to
measure the dynamical masses of the brown dwarf binary believed to comprise GL
569 B. Our analysis did not yield this result but, instead, revealed two
surprises. First, at age ~100 Myr, the system is younger than had been reported
earlier. Second, our spectroscopic and photometric results provide support for
earlier indications that GL 569 B is actually a hierarchical brown dwarf triple
rather than a binary. Our results suggest that the three components of GL 569 B
have roughly equal mass, ~0.04 Msun.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical

Superdiffusion in Decoupled Continuous Time Random Walks
Continuous time random walk models with decoupled waiting time density are
studied. When the spatial one jump probability density belongs to the Levy
distribution type and the total time transition is exponential a generalized
superdiffusive regime is established. This is verified by showing that the
square width of the probability distribution (appropriately defined)grows as
with when . An important connection
of our results and those of Tsallis' nonextensive statistics is shown. The
normalized q-expectation value of calculated with the corresponding
probability distribution behaves exactly as in the asymptotic
limit.Comment: 9 pages (.tex file), 1 Postscript figures, uses revtex.st
Tuning and Locking the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances of CuS (Covellite) Nanocrystals by an Amorphous CuPdxS Shell
[Image: see text] We demonstrate the stabilization of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in a semiconductor-based core–shell heterostructure made of a plasmonic CuS core embedded in an amorphous-like alloyed CuPd(x)S shell. This heterostructure is prepared by reacting the as-synthesized CuS nanocrystals (NCs) with Pd(2+) cations at room temperature in the presence of an electron donor (ascorbic acid). The reaction starts from the surface of the CuS NCs and proceeds toward the center, causing reorganization of the initial lattice and amorphization of the covellite structure. According to density functional calculations, Pd atoms are preferentially accommodated between the bilayer formed by the S–S covalent bonds, which are therefore broken, and this can be understood as the first step leading to amorphization of the particles upon insertion of the Pd(2+) ions. The position and intensity in near-infrared LSPRs can be tuned by altering the thickness of the shell and are in agreement with the theoretical optical simulation based on the Mie–Gans theory and Drude model. Compared to the starting CuS NCs, the amorphous CuPd(x)S shell in the core–shell nanoparticles makes their plasmonic response less sensitive to a harsh oxidation environment (generated, for example, by the presence of I(2))
Dimension-independent Harnack inequalities for subordinated semigroups
Dimension-independent Harnack inequalities are derived for a class of
subordinate semigroups. In particular, for a diffusion satisfying the
Bakry-Emery curvature condition, the subordinate semigroup with power
satisfies a dimension-free Harnack inequality provided ,
and it satisfies the log-Harnack inequality for all Some
infinite-dimensional examples are also presented
Carbon nanotubes and catalysis: the many facets of a successful marriage
Carbon nanotubes have emerged as unique carbon allotropes that bear very interesting prospects in catalysis. Their use is mostly related to that of supports for inorganic metal catalysts, including molecular catalysts, metal nanoparticles, metal oxides or even more complex hierarchical hybrids. However, several reports have shown that they can intriguingly act as metal-free catalysts, with performance often superior to that of other carbon materials, in particular when ad hoc organic functional groups are attached prior to catalytic screening. The range of catalytic reactions is quite wide, and it includes standard organic synthesis, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis as well as other important industrial processes. In the last few years, the energy sector has acquired a dominant role as one of the most sought-after fields of application, given its ever-increasing importance in society
Masses and Distance of the Young Binary NTTS 045251+3016
As part of our continuing campaign to measure the masses of pre-main sequence
stars dynamically and thus to assess the reliability of the discrepant
theoretical calculations of contraction to the main sequence, we present new
results for NTTS 045251+3016, a visual and double-lined spectroscopic binary in
the Taurus Star Forming Region. We obtained new high angular resolution
astrometry and high spectral resolution spectroscopy at Keck Observatory. The
new data lead to a significant revision of previously published orbital
parameters. In particular, we find that the masses of the primary and secondary
are 0.86+/-0.11 and 0.55+/-0.05 M_sun, respectively, smaller than previously
reported, and that the system lies 158.7+/-3.9 pc from the sun, further than
previously reported.Comment: 36pp; accepted for publication in the Ap
Soft Body Impact Against Aeronautical Structures
Statistics show that impacts of soft body against aeronautical structure are not so rare events. The damage caused by the impact of hailstones or of birds can sometimes be so heavy to compromise the service life of the vehicle. Companies, research centers and universities are interested in the evaluation of the effects of this kind of events and lots of researching works have been recently developed in this field. In this paper, an overview of the last studies performed at the Laboratory for the Safety in Transports (LaST – Crash Lab.) of Politecnico of Milan are presented throughout experimental tests and numerical finite element models. The validity of the correlation results method to prevent possible heavy consequence caused by these events is shown
