The dynamical nature of time
It is usually assumed that the "" parameter in the equations of dynamics
can be identified with the indication of the pointer of a clock. Things are not
so easy, however. In fact, since the equations of motion can be written in
terms of but also of , being any well behaved function, each
one of those infinite parametric times is as good as the Newtonian one to
study classical dynamics. Here we show that the relation between the
mathematical parametric time in the equations of dynamics and the physical
dynamical time that is measured with clocks is more complex and subtle
than usually assumed. These two times, therefore, must be carefully
distinguished since their difference may have significant consequences.
Furthermore, we show that not all the dynamical clock-times are necessarily
equivalent and that the observational fingerprint of this non-equivalence has
the same form as that of the Pioneer anomaly.Comment: 13 pages, no figure

Neighbor cache prefetching for multimedia image and video processing
Cache performance is strongly influenced by the type of locality embodied in programs. In particular, multimedia programs handling images and videos are characterized by a bidimensional spatial locality, which is not adequately exploited by standard caches. In this paper we propose novel cache prefetching techniques for image data, called neighbor prefetching, able to improve exploitation of bidimensional spatial locality. A performance comparison is provided against other assessed prefetching techniques on a multimedia workload (with MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 decoding, image processing, and visual object segmentation), including a detailed evaluation of both the miss rate and the memory access time. Results prove that neighbor prefetching achieves a significant reduction in the time due to delayed memory cycles (more than 97% on MPEG-4 with respect to 75% of the second performing technique). This reduction leads to a substantial speedup on the overall memory access time (up to 140% for MPEG-4). Performance has been measured with the PRIMA trace-driven simulator, specifically devised to support cache prefetching
Improving data prefetching efficacy in multimedia applications
The workload of multimedia applications has a strong impact on cache memory performance, since the locality of memory references embedded in multimedia programs differs from that of traditional programs. In many cases, standard cache memory organization achieves poorer performance when used for multimedia. A widely-explored approach to improve cache performance is hardware prefetching, which allows the pre-loading of data in the cache before they are referenced. However, existing hardware prefetching approaches are unable to exploit the potential improvement in performance, since they are not tailored to multimedia locality. In this paper we propose novel effective approaches to hardware prefetching to be used in image processing programs for multimedia. Experimental results are reported for a suite of multimedia image processing programs including MPEG-2 decoding and encoding, convolution, thresholding, and edge chain coding
Multibaseline phase unwrapping for InSAR topography estimation
Multibaseline Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Interferometry (INSAR) can be successfully exploited for automatic phase unwrapping and high quality Digital Elevation Model (DEM) reconstruction. The information coming from several
interferograms with different baselines increases the elevation ambiguity interval and allows automatic phase unwrapping. The height of each pixel in the image is
considered as a random variable: a Maximum-Likelihood (ML) estimation of the height is carried out by exploiting the probability density function of the interferometric phase, that depends on the local coherence value. After phase unwrapping is possible to combine all the information available, getting a combined DEM that is more reliable than each single DEM. Results obtained using ERS-1/2 SAR data gathered over Vesuvius and Etna are presented. In both cases an accuracy better than 8 meters was obtained
PIXE and ToF-SIMS analysis of streaker samplers filters
This paper presents methodological innovations introduced in the characterisation of urban aerosol collected in Italy in a recent campaign. Two complementary ion beam analysis (IBA) techniques were used to analyse Nuclepore filters used in continuous streaker samplers to collect airborne particles in four Italian towns. Na to Pb elemental concentrations were obtained by particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE), while time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) produced, on the same samples, time trends for several elements and molecular fragments. In addition, light attenuation measurements were used as a tracer for black carbon. The data produced by these three techniques was merged into a unique data set to address the characterisation of particulate matter sources. Correlations between elemental concentration trends (PIXE) and relative trends for molecular fragments (ToF-SIMS) and black carbon (light attenuation) have been studied by cluster and principal component analysis

structure in a coherently driven broad-area vertical-cavity surface-emitting
laser (VCSEL) operated below threshold. Control is achieved by
electro-optically steering a writing beam through a pre-programmable switch
