In an unusual instance, live oil sardine in very good numbers were handpicked from the beach at Uchila and Ullal, near Someshwara 20 km south of Mangalore. The beach at Someshwara is very steep and the sea is very rough especially during the monsoon months

Genotoxic and antibacterial nature of biofabricated zinc oxide nanoparticles from Sida rhombifolia linn

    Get PDF
Phyto-assisted synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) has gained importance because of their stable and eco-friendly nature with significant biological properties compared to chemically synthesized NPs. In the present study biofabrication of ZnO-NPs were carried out using aqueous leaf extract of Sida rhombifolia Linn. The biofabricated ZnO-NPs showed an absorption peak at 307 nm and bandgap energy of 3.51 eV with an average size of similar to 30 nm. The XRD analysis revealed stiff narrow peaks confirming the particles were of no impurities, which were in agreement with EDS analysis. The biofabricated ZnO-NPs exhibited significant antibacterial activity with a MIC of 0.25 mg mL(-1) against E. coli, while it was 0.5 mg mL(-1) against B. subtilis and S. typhi. The live and dead cell analysis of the nanoparticles confirmed that the antibacterial activity was due to damage in the cell walls of the test pathogens. Further, the nanoparticles also offered significant antioxidant and genotoxic properties with an IC50 of 974.5 mu g mL(-1) and 548.4 mu g mL(-1), respectively

Heavy-Metal Concentrations in Sediments Collected from ICRISAT Lake, Patancheru, India

    Get PDF
To determine and characterize the initial background concentrations of heavy metals, a total of 50 sediment samples were collected from the largest lake at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Patancheru, India. The finely ground sediment samples were digested using a microwave-assisted digestion method and analyzed for 15 heavy metals using inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The results showed that the concentrations of the heavy metals varied greatly with metal and sediment sample, but in general the concentrations were low. Our results suggest that the sediments from this lake (15 ha in area) at the ICRISAT center do not appear contaminated with the heavy metals evaluated, and they indeed reflect normal background concentrations of these metals released through the natural process of weathering

(Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITKs’) of Indian Marine Fishermen with reference to Climate Change)

    Get PDF
The fisher folk of coastal India possess a rich repertoire of ancient knowledge and traditional wisdom with respect to various climate change related phenomena which they have made use of in their day to day fishing activities. This provides them, the rule of the thumb to be followed with respect to observed indicators or relationship with in events of climate change related inflections. These local fisher communities over centuries, have developed and implemented extensive mitigation and adaptation strategies that have enabled them reduce their vulnerability to past climate variability and change. However, the fact that this rich treasure house of indigenous wisdom which serves as a complement to modern scientific methods of adapting and mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change in fisheries has been largely ignored or rather receded into the mists of antiquity

Fishery trends of large pelagics along the Kerala coast

    Get PDF
The estimated average annual landings of large pelagics in Kerala during 2013 -2019 was 35678 t, which formed about 16% of the national average landings of large pelagics of India. The average group wise contribution during 2013-2019 was mainly by tunas (54%), billfishes (15%), seer fishes (14%) and barracudas (8%). The peak fishery occurred during October to March with trawl nets, gill nets and hooks & lines employed. The mechanized, motorized and traditional sectors tap the resources which have demand in the domestic as well as export markets and a supply chain is well established. Appropriate management measures for sustainable utilization are flagged

Demonstration of Mussel Farming in Karnataka: A Success Story

    Get PDF
Spat settlement along the Karnataka coast occurs during October to November. The mussel fishing season in the region also begins from October. The dense attachment of mussel spats occurs along with adult mussels in the intertidal and subtidal areas, which can be productively utilized for farming, provided a considerable numbers of farmers are involved to establish and maintain the link between mussel farmers and mussel fishers

Fishery, biology and population characteristics of longtail tuna, Thunnus tonggol (Bleeker, 1851) caught along the Indian coast

    Get PDF
The longtail tuna, Thunnus tonggol, Bleeker, 1851 is an economically important species from commercial and recreational point of view. The species inhabit shelf and oceanic waters of tropical and temperate regions of the Indo-Pacific between 47° N and 33° S (Froese and Pauly, 2009) and generally occupy neritic areas of the oceans close to land masses (Yesaki, 1994)

Pennella instructa infestations on billfishes caught from the Eastern Arabian Sea

    Get PDF
Billfish are large migratory pelagic fish that inhabit tropical and subtropical oceans. There are ten species worldwide, categorized under Sailfish, Marlins, Spearfishes, and Swordfish. Sailfish and marlins caught from the Eastern Arabian Sea were found to be infested with an enigmatic parasite Pennella instructa. This infestation was recorded for five consecutive years (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023) during data collection. Pennella oken, 1815 (family Pennellidae, order Siphonostomatoida), presently known as Pennella instructa Wilson C.B., 1917 is a genus of largesized mesoparasitic copepod parasites with peculiar morphology (Kabata, 1979)
