    An abstraction and refinement computational approach to safety verification of discrete time nonlinear systems

    This paper addresses safety verification of nonlinear systems through invariant set computation. More precisely, our goal is verifying if the state of a given discrete time nonlinear system will keep evolving within a safe region, starting from a given set of initial conditions. To this purpose, we introduce a conformant PieceWise Affine (PWA) abstraction of the nonlinear system, which is instrumental to computing a conservative approximation of its maximal invariant set within the safe region. If the obtained set covers the set of initial conditions, safety is proven. Otherwise, subsequent refinements of the PWA abstraction are performed, either on the whole safe region or on some appropriate subset identified through a guided refinement approach and containing the set of initial conditions. Some numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach

    Assessment of susceptibility to European stone fruit yellows phytoplasma of new plum variety and five rootstock/plum variety combinations

    Two separate experiments were carried out to assess the plum susceptibility to infection by European stone fruit yellows phytoplasmas during a five years period. Commercial varieties/cultivars and new selections grafted on Myrabolan 29C were evaluated in at least two plots of four plants each. Visual inspection and PCR/RFLP identification of phytoplasmas detected an increasing phytoplasma presence in both symptomatic and asymptomatic plants. Eight Japanese plum selections showed ESFY symptoms or pathogen presence in the 50% of the plants and nine selections showed ESFY infection in 20% of the plants. Only nine selections showed absence of both symptoms and pathogen. Although the European selections/cultivars were not symptomatic, plants belonging to six of these cultivars were positive for phytoplasma infection. The evaluation of cultivar/rootstock combinations indicate phytoplasma presence from the first year after plantation on. Two of the rootstocks seem to induce a delay in symptoms appearance and cultivar T.C. Sun resulted to be the most susceptible to the disease independently from the rootstock employed.     Effects of NSAIDs and paracetamol (acetaminophen) on protein kinase C epsilon translocation and on substance P synthesis and release in cultured sensory neurons.

    Celecoxib, diclofenac, ibuprofen, and nimesulide are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) very commonly used for the treatment of moderate to mild pain, together with paracetamol (acetaminophen), a very widely used analgesic with a lesser anti-inflammatory effect. In the study reported here, we tested the efficacy of celecoxib, diclofenac, and ibuprofen on preprotachykinin mRNA synthesis, substance P (SP) release, prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) release, and protein kinase C epsilon (PKC\u25b) translocation in rat cultured sensory neurons from dorsal root ganglia (DRGs). The efficacy of these NSAIDs was compared with the efficacy of paracetamol and nimesulide in in vitro models of hyperalgesia (investigated previously). While nimesulide and paracetamol, as in previous experiments, decreased the percentage of cultured DRG neurons showing translocation of PKC\u25b caused by 100 nM thrombin or 1 \u3bcM bradykinin in a dose-dependent manner, the other NSAIDs tested did not have a significant effect. The amount of SP released by peptidergic neurons and the expression level of preprotachykinin mRNA were assessed in basal conditions and after 70 minutes or 36 hours of stimulation with an inflammatory soup (IS) containing potassium chloride, thrombin, bradykinin, and endothelin-1. The release of SP at 70 minutes was inhibited only by nimesulide, while celecoxib and diclofenac were effective at 36 hours. The mRNA basal level of the SP precursor preprotachykinin expressed in DRG neurons was reduced only by nimesulide, while the increased levels expressed during treatment with the IS were significantly reduced by all drugs tested, with the exception of ibuprofen. All drugs were able to decrease basal and IS-stimulated PGE(2) release. Our study demonstrates novel mechanisms of action of commonly used NSAIDS

    In this manuscript we present an original implementation of network management functions in the context of Software Defined Networking. We demonstrate a full integration of an artificial intelligence driven management, an SDN control plane, and a programmable data plane. Constraint Programming is used to implement a management operating system that accepts high level specifications, via a northbound interface, in terms of operational objective and directives. These are translated in technology-specific constraints and directives for the SDN control plane, leveraging the programmable data plane, which is enriched with functionalities suited to feed data that enable the most effective operation of the “intelligent” control plane, by exploiting the language

    Bronchoalveolar lavage in systemic sclerosis with lung involvement: role and correlations with functional, radiological and scintigraphic parameters

    To evaluate the role and the prognostic value of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in scleroderma patients withinterstitial lung disease. We reviewed the records of 79 patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) who had dyspnea and pulmonary involvement and underwent BAL study. Sixty-two patients were prospectively followed up for 12–36 months and re-evaluated by pulmonary function tests (PFTs). Seventy-nine SSc patients were enrolled (71 F and 8 M), 55 with limited and 24 with a diVuse form; mean age55 +/- 13 years; mean disease duration 55.2 +/- 59 months. All patients were ANA positive, of these 30 were anti-topoisomerase-1 positive (anti-Topo1) and 22 were anti-centromere positive (ACA). Thirty-one patients had alveolitis (39.2%) that was neutrophilic in 12 patients, eosinophilic in 3 and mixed (neutrophilic and eosinophilic) in 16 patients. Compared to patients without alveolitis, those with alveolitis had a significant reduction of carbon monoxide diffusing capacity (DLCO), forced vital capacity (FVC) and more elevated lung high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scores. Furthermore, alveolar clearance was signiWcantly accelerated. No differences were found between patients with and without alveolitis regarding disease subsets (diffuse vs limited-SSc); a significant predominance of anti-Topo1 antibodies was foundin the alveolitis group and of ACA antibodies in the non-alveolitiscohort. During the follow-up, (range: 12–36 months) 62patients, 26 with and 36 without alveolitis were re-evaluated with PFTs. In the alveolitis group, 12 patients (46.1%)showed stable lung function parameters and 14 had worsened (53.8%). In this group, 20 patients (77%) received cyclophosphamide (CYC): 11 (55%) worsened (5 of them died of cardio-pulmonary complications) and 9 (45%) remained stable. Six patients could not be treated; of these 3 remained stableand 3 worsened. Among 36 patients with normal BAL, 11 (30.5%) showed stable lung function parameters, 13 improved (36.1%) and 12 worsened (33.3%); in this last group, 2 patients died of extra-pulmonary complications. Six patients, with progression of lung fibrosis, were treated with CYC: 3 of them improved and 3 remained stable. Our study revealed a trend toward a more severe course in the SSc patients with BAL alveolitis; probably the non-significant result is related to the low number of the examined subjects and to the selection criteria. However, BAL remains the only tool to exclude lung infections and, in our experience, a useful instrument to evaluate interstitial lung disease in SSc patients
