Age Assessment of White Bass from Otoliths, Dorsal Spines and Scales
Otoliths, dorsal spines, and scales of 85 white bass collected in1987 from a pre-spawning group were used forage assessment. Agreement between spine and otolith ages were 78.3%, between scale and otolith ages was 68.2%. Unlike spine ages, percent agreement of scale ages with otolith ages decreased from small to large fish. Length-frequency analysis in conjunction with ages assessed by the three calcified structures showed that dorsal spines and scales underestimated white bass ages compared to the otoliths. Clarity of the otolith annuli, even of the older fish, makes them a reliable source for white bass age assessment
Age and Growth of Redear Sunfish Lepomis microlophus (Gunthur), from Bob Kidd Lake
Total lengths (62-285mm) and body scales from 75 redear sunfish collected by electroshocking from Bob Kidd Lake during October and November 1985 were used for this study. The length-frequency distribution yielded five age groups, however, the body scale analysis revealed eight age groups. The total length scale radius relationship was estimated as, TL = 17.98 + 0.92 Sr . Lengths attained at earlier ages were estimated by the Fraser-Lee method and the Bertlanffy growth model was fitted to the lengths for ages five through ten, and the resulting equation, L₁ = 295 [1 - exp — 0.29 (t - 1.83)], estimated lengths similar to the back- calculated lengths (r = 0.98)
COMPARATIVE TREND ANALYSIS IN COST OF PADDY CULTIVATION AND PROFITABILITY ACROSS THREE STATES OF INDIA
Agriculture has seen tremendous changes in the past century, with agricultural research investments paving the way for productivity gains leading to reduction in production costs and capacity to carter larger population. The contribution of agriculture to the GDP is on the decline and so does profitability. Farmer suicides were not a common phenomenon in India before 1990, but more than two lakh farmers committed suicides between 1990 and 2010. The underlying causes for failure in agriculture could be many including climate change, reduction in profitability and fragmentation of land. This article explores the trends in the cost of cultivation of paddy and its profitability in three Indian states of Kerala, Odisha and Tamil Nadu during the period 1999-2011. It is observed that the factors like hired machine and human labor, fertilizer, are all growing in varying proportions leading to an increase in the cost of cultivation. In the years showing profits, Profitability seemed to be averaging around ten percent and while in most of the years loss was reported. Over the years, the increase in cost of cultivation seems to be stable in contrast with the increase in value of paddy produced by farmers. The APM project has appropriately addressed issues of increasing cost of manures through introduction of vermicomposting. Other appropriate techniques and technologies have also been demonstrated for increased profitability. Efforts need to be taken to create an enabling environment to ensure a commensurate income to farmers for a dignified life
Single gap superconductivity in beta-Bi2Pd
beta-Bi2Pd compound has been proposed as another example of a multi-gap
superconductor [Y. Imai et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jap. 81, 113708 (2012)]. Here, we
report on measurements of several important physical quantities capable to show
a presence of multiple energy gaps on our superconducting single crystals of
beta-Bi2Pd with the critical temperature Tc close to 5 K. The calorimetric
study via a sensitive ac technique shows a sharp anomaly at the superconducting
transition, however only a single energy gap is detected. Also other
characteristics inferred from calorimetric measurements as the field dependence
of the Sommerfeld coefficient and the temperature and angular dependence of the
upper critical magnetic field point unequivocally to standard single s-wave gap
superconductivity. The Hall-probe magnetometry provides the same result from
the analysis of the temperature dependence of the lower critical field. A
single-gapped BCS density of states is detected by the scanning tunneling
spectroscopy measurements. Then, the bulk as well as the surface sensitive
probes evidence a standard conventional superconductivity in this system where
the topologically protected surface states have been recently detected by ARPES

Spin correlations among the charge carriers in an ordered stripe phase
We have observed a diffuse component to the low-energy magnetic excitation
spectrum of stripe-ordered La5/3Sr1/3NiO4 probed by neutron inelastic
scattering. The diffuse scattering forms a square pattern with sides parallel
and perpendicular to the stripe directions. The signal is dispersive, with a
maximum energy of ~10 meV. Probed at 2 meV the scattering decreases in strength
with increasing temperature, and is barely visible at 100 K. We argue that the
signal originates from dynamic, quasi- one-dimensional, antiferromagnetic
correlations among the stripe electrons.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. To be published in Physical Review Letter
Electrodynamics of the equatorial F-region ionosphere during pre-sunrise period
The electrodynamics of the pre-sunrise equatorial F-region is investigated using HF Doppler radar and digital ionosonde. The observations are limited to those days for which the radar probing frequency is below the ƒoF2 value. The ionosphere observation using HF Doppler radar exhibit interesting features during pre-sunrise period similar to the post sunset pre-reversal enhancement. The most striking feature observed during pre-sunrise period is the sudden downward excursion in the vertical drift around local sunrise followed by an upward turning. Pre-sunrise observations of vertical plasma drift and the sunrise downward excursion followed by an upward turning after the ground sunrise related to the zonal electric field at the equatorial F-region are the most significant results not reported earlier
Doping Dependence of Collective Spin and Orbital Excitations in Spin 1 Quantum Antiferromagnet LaSrNiO Observed by X-rays
We report the first empirical demonstration that resonant inelastic x-ray
scattering (RIXS) is sensitive to \emph{collective} magnetic excitations in
systems by probing the Ni -edge of LaSrNiO (). The magnetic excitation peak is asymmetric, indicating the
presence of single and multi spin-flip excitations. As the hole doping level is
increased, the zone boundary magnon energy is suppressed at a much larger rate
than that in hole doped cuprates. Based on the analysis of the orbital and
charge excitations observed by RIXS, we argue that this difference is related
to the orbital character of the doped holes in these two families. This work
establishes RIXS as a probe of fundamental magnetic interactions in nickelates
opening the way towards studies of heterostructures and ultra-fast pump-probe
experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, see ancillary files for the supplemental materia
Performance Evaluation and Experimental Studies on Metallised Gel Propellants
Metallised gel propellants offer higher specific impulse and volumetric loading, reduced vaporisation loss, spillage and slosh problems and easy storage in comparison to the conventional liquid propellants. Theoretical performance analysis of gel propellant containing Al in unsymmetrical dimethyl hydrazine-dinitrogen tetroxide (UDMH-N/sub 2/O/sub 4} system shows peak Isp (vacuum condition) of 316.7 s and 318.3 s at oxidiser/fuel (O/f) ratios of 1.5 and 1.0, respectively for 30 per cent and 40 per cent UDMH-Al gel propellants, under standard conditions. The effect of other parameters like area ratio and chamber pressure on performance has been brought out in view of mission oriented applications. Aluminium has been found to be a better choice over magnesium in metallised gel propellants. Experimental studies on UDMH gellation using propellant grade (15 micrometer)and pyrotechnic grade (1.5 micrometer)Al in 500g batch level show that gellant(methyl cellulose) concentration could be reduced by 50 percent using pyrotechnic grade Al. The pseudoplastic-thixotropic behaviour, flow rate through die holes, burst pressure tests and bulk density are studied. UDMH -25 to 30 per cent Al gels with both grades of Al are found to be stable, pseudoplastic (shear thinning) and thixotropic (time-dependent shear thinning), but their flow pattern through die holes differ in nature
ASSESSMENT OF FOOD AND NUTRIENT INTAKE OF COMMUNITIES ACROSS THREE AGRO-BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOTS IN INDIA
Balanced and adequate nutrition is important in improving the health of the community in general and of vulnerable groups in particular. Assessment of the nutritional status of a community is important for development of implementation strategies and suitable policies. Dietary assessment indicates whether intake of macro and micro nutrient are adequate. Anthropometric measurements and comparisons of nutrient intakes with reference values are easy and non-invasive, economical and sufficiently reliable methods for the determination of nutritional status. The present study uses micro-level data drawn from 24 hours recall diet survey to calculate the mean food and nutrient intake by communities in three agro-biodiversity hotspots. The 24 hours recall diet survey was carried out among households in three study locations during June to November 2013 among the project intervention and non-intervention groups. Information on age, sex, physiological status, physical activity of the household members who took meals during the previous 24 hours was collected for computing consumption unit. The result shows that cereals are the chief source of energy in the study locations contributing 70-80% of the daily energy intake. Mean intake of green leafy vegetable are negligible in the study locations. The intake of sugar and jaggery among the intervention group of Meenangadi is 48% higher than recommended dietary intake, while in the non-intervention group it is 28% higher; and 20% higher among the nonintervention group in the Kolli Hills. The intake of vitamin A is the lowest among other nutrients across the internvention and non-intervention groups in the study locations
