    The longstanding problem of moving discrete solitary waves in nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger lattices is revisited. The context is photorefractive crystal lattices with saturable nonlinearity whose grand-canonical energy barrier vanishes for isolated coupling strength values. {\em Genuinely localised travelling waves} are computed as a function of the system parameters {\it for the first time}.     A phenomenological model of the superconducting state of the Bechgaard salts

    We present a group theoretical analysis of the superconducting state of the Bechgaard salts, e.g., (TMTSF)_2PF_6 or (TMTSF)_2ClO_6. We show that there are eight symmetry distinct superconducting states. Of these only the (fully gapped, even frequency, p-wave, triplet) 'polar state' is consistent with the full range of the experiments on the Bechgaard salts. The gap of the polar state is d(k) (psi_uk,0,0), where psi_uk may be any odd parity function that is translationally invariant.Comment: 4 pages, no figure

    Background: Chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as ME (CFS/ME), is a condition characterised primarily by severe, disabling fatigue, of unknown origin, which has a poor prognosis and serious personal and economic consequences. Evidence for the effectiveness of any treatment for CFS/ME in primary care, where most patients are seen, is sparse. Recently, a brief, pragmatic treatment for CFS/ME, based on a physiological dysregulation model of the condition, was shown to be successful in improving fatigue and physical functioning in patients in secondary care. The treatment involves providing patients with a readily understandable explanation of their symptoms, from which flows the rationale for a graded rehabilitative plan, developed collaboratively with the therapist. The present trial will test the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of pragmatic rehabilitation when delivered by specially trained general nurses in primary care. We selected a client-centred counselling intervention, called supportive listening, as a comparison treatment. Counselling has been shown to be as effective as cognitive behaviour therapy for treating fatigue in primary care, is more readily available, and controls for supportive therapist contact time. Our control condition is treatment as usual by the general practitioner (GP). Methods and design: This study protocol describes the design of an ongoing, single-blind, pragmatic randomized controlled trial of a brief (18 week) self-help treatment, pragmatic rehabilitation, delivered by specially trained nurse-therapists in patients' homes, compared with nurse-therapist delivered supportive listening and treatment as usual by the GP. An economic evaluation, taking a societal viewpoint, is being carried out alongside the clinical trial. Three adult general nurses were trained over a six month period to deliver the two interventions. Patients aged over 18 and fulfilling the Oxford criteria for CFS are assessed at baseline, after the intervention, and again one year later. Primary outcomes are self-reported physical functioning and fatigue at one year, and will be analysed on an intention-to-treat basis. A qualitative study will examine the interventions' mechanisms of change, and also GPs' drivers and barriers towards referral

    The effect of irradiation-induced disorder on the conductivity and critical temperature of the organic superconductor κ\kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2_2Cu(SCN)2_2

    We have introduced defects into clean samples of the organic superconductor κ\kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2_2Cu(SCN)2_2 in order to determine their effect on the temperature dependence of the conductivity and the critical temperature TcT_{\rm c}. We find a violation of Matthiessen's rule that can be explained by a model of the conductivity involving a defect-assisted interlayer channel which acts in parallel with the band-like conductivity. We observe an unusual dependence of TcT_{\rm c} on residual resistivity which is not consistent with the generalised Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory for an order parameter with a single component, providing an important constraint on models of the superconductivity in this material

    On the computational content of Zorn's lemma

    We give a computational interpretation to an abstract instance of Zorn's lemma formulated as a wellfoundedness principle in the language of arithmetic in all finite types. This is achieved through G\"odel's functional interpretation, and requires the introduction of a novel form of recursion over non-wellfounded partial orders whose existence in the model of total continuous functionals is proven using domain theoretic techniques. We show that a realizer for the functional interpretation of open induction over the lexicographic ordering on sequences follows as a simple application of our main results

    Effects of deposit-feeding bivalve (Macomona liliana) density on intertidal sediment stability

    Effects of macrofaunal feeding and bioturbation on intertidal sediment stability (u*crit) were investigated by manipulating density (0-3 x ambient) of the facultative deposit-feeding wedge shell (Macomona liliana) on the Tuapiro sandflat in Tauranga Harbour, New Zealand. Sediment stability increased up to 200% with decreasing M. liliana density and this was correlated with greater sediment microalgal biomass and mucilage content. The change in stability occurred despite homogeneity of grain size amongst experimental treatments, highlighting the importance of macrofaunal-microbial relationships in determining estuarine sediment erodibility

    Age-Five Results from the Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program Slash Pine Polymix Trials

    The Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program (CFGRP) has completed polymix test installation for the second generation of slash pine (White, et al. 1993).The objective of this testing is to evaluate the general combining ability of advanced generation slash pine selections for rust resistance and individual tree volume. The eight tests comprising Polymix Series I were established in the winter of 1997-1998 and contain 139 polymix families. The field design for this test series was randomized complete block with twenty blocks of single-tree plots per location. Great care was taken in selection and silvicultural treatment of these sites. The resulting age-five single-tree heritabilities for rust resistance and individual tree volume were 0.26 and 0.30, respectively. These heritabilities are from twice to three times those realized from first generation tests at the same age. The differences between heritabilities across generations result from better silvicultural treatment which provided a more uniform environment and faster growth, and from a better field design which positioned the offspring more efficiently across the environment. Increases in the heritability of rust resistance are most probably due to the uniform environment for growth. The more uniform environment also affected the difference between filler and non-filler microsites making the types of microsite appear less different than was previously assumed.Papers and abstracts from the 27th Southern Forest Tree Improvement Conference held at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma on June 24-27, 2003
