How Dry Are Red Mergers?
The focus of current research in galaxy evolution has increasingly turned to
understanding the effect that mergers have on the evolution of systems on the
red sequence. For those interactions purported to occur dissipationlessly (so
called "dry mergers"), it would appear that the role of gas is minimal.
However, if these mergers are not completely dry, then even low levels of gas
may be detectable. The purpose of our study is to test whether early type
galaxies with HI in or around them, or "wet" ellipticals, would have been
selected as dry mergers by the criteria in van Dokkum (2005, AJ, 130, 2647). To
that end, we examine a sample of 20 early types from the HI Rogues Gallery with
neutral hydrogen in their immediate environs. Of these, the 15 brightest and
reddest galaxies match the optical dry merger criteria, but in each case, the

Hygroscopic behavior of atmospherically relevant water-soluble carboxylic salts and their influence on the water uptake of ammonium sulfate
The hygroscopic behavior of atmospherically relevant water-soluble carboxylic salts and their effects on ammonium sulfate were investigated using a hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer (H-TDMA). No hygroscopic growth is observed for disodium oxalate, while ammonium oxalate shows slight growth (growth factor = 1.05 at 90%). The growth factors at 90% RH for sodium acetate, disodium malonate, disodium succinate, disodium tartrate, diammonium tartrate, sodium pyruvate, disodium maleate, and humic acid sodium salt are 1.79, 1.78, 1.69, 1.54, 1.29, 1.70, 1.78, and 1.19, respectively. The hygroscopic growth of mixtures of organic salts with ammonium sulfate, which are prepared as surrogates of atmospheric aerosols, was determined. A clear shift in deliquescence relative humidity to lower RH with increasing organic mass fraction was observed for these mixtures. Above 80% RH, the contribution to water uptake by the organic salts was close to that of ammonium sulfate for the majority of investigated compounds. The observed hygroscopic growth of the mixed particles at RH above the deliquescence relative humidity of ammonium sulfate agreed well with that predicted using the Zdanovskii-Stokes-Robinson (ZSR) mixing rule. Mixtures of ammonium sulfate with organic salts are more hygroscopic than mixtures with organic acids, indicating that neutralization by gas-phase ammonia and/or association with cations of dicarbonxylic acids may enhance the hygroscopicity of the atmospheric particles
The Surface Brightness Fluctuations and Globular Cluster Populations of M87 and its Companions
Using the surface brightness fluctuations in HST WFPC-2 images, we determine
that M87, NGC 4486B, and NGC 4478 are all at a distance of ~16 Mpc, while NGC
4476 lies in the background at ~21 Mpc. We also examine the globular clusters
of M87 using archived HST fields. We detect the bimodal color distribution, and
find that the amplitude of the red peak relative to the blue peak is greatest
near the center. This feature is in good agreement with the merger model of
elliptical galaxy formation, where some of the clusters originated in
progenitor galaxies while other formed during mergers.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
The Star Clusters in the Irregular Galaxy NGC 4449
We examine the star clusters in the irregular galaxy NGC 4449. We use a
near-infrared spectrum and broad-band images taken with the HST to place a
limit of 8--15 Myrs on the age of the bright central ojbect in NGC 4449. Its
luminosity and size suggest that it is comparable to young super star clusters.
However, there is a peculiar nucleated-bar structure at the center of this star
cluster, and we suggest that this structure is debris from the interaction that
has produced the counter-rotating gas systems and extended gas streamers in the
galaxy.
From the images we identify 60 other candidate compact star clusters in NGC
4449. Fourteen of these could be background elliptical galaxies or old globular
star clusters. Of the star clusters, three, in addition to the central object,
are potentially super star clusters, and many others are comparable to the
populous clusters found in the LMC. The star clusters span a large range in
ages with no obvious peak in cluster formation that might be attributed to the

Variational assimilation of Lagrangian trajectories in the Mediterranean ocean Forecasting System
Abstract. A novel method for three-dimensional variational assimilation of Lagrangian data with a primitive-equation ocean model is proposed. The assimilation scheme was implemented in the Mediterranean ocean Forecasting System and evaluated for a 4-month period. Four experiments were designed to assess the impact of trajectory assimilation on the model output, i.e. the sea-surface height, velocity, temperature and salinity fields. It was found from the drifter and Argo trajectory assimilation experiment that the forecast skill of surface-drifter trajectories improved by 15 %, that of intermediate-depth float trajectories by 20 %, and moreover, that the forecasted sea-surface height fields improved locally by 5 % compared to satellite data, while the quality of the temperature and salinity fields remained at previous levels. In conclusion, the addition of Lagrangian trajectory assimilation proved to reduce the uncertainties in the model fields, thus yielding a higher accuracy of the ocean forecasts
Source/load-pull noise measurements at ka band
This paper is focused on the extraction of the noise parameters of a linear active device by exploiting both forward and reverse noise power measurements associated with different termina-tions. In order for load-pull measurements to yield a significant marginal improvement (as compared to forward measurements only) it is expected that the device under test should appreciably deviate from unidirectionality. For this reason, the source/load-pull technique is applied to frequencies at which the considered devices are still usable but their reverse noise factor exhibits a measurable dependence on the output terminations. Details on the test bench set up to the purpose, covering the 20–40 GHz frequency range, are provided. A characterization campaign on a 60 nm gate length, 4 × 35 µm GaN-on-Si HEMT fabricated by OMMIC is illustrated
Structure of the Galaxies in the NGC 80 Group
BV-bands photometric data obtained at the 6-m telescope of the Special
Astrophysical Observatory are used to analyze the structure of 13 large disk
galaxies in the NGC 80 group. Nine of the 13 galaxies under consideration are
classified by us as lenticular galaxies. The stellar populations in the
galaxies are very different, from old ones with ages of T>10 Gyrs (IC 1541) to
relatively young, with the ages of T<2-3 Gyr (IC 1548, NGC 85). In one case,
current star formation is known (UCM 0018+2216). In most of the galaxies, more
precisely in all of them more luminous than M(B) -18, two-tiered
(`antitruncated') stellar disks are detected, whose radial surface brightness
profiles can be fitted by two exponential segments with different scalelengths
-- shorter near the center and longer at the periphery. All dwarf S0 galaxies
with single-scalelength exponential disks are close companions to giant
galaxies. Except for this fact, no dependence of the properties of S0 galaxies
on distance from the center of the group is found. Morphological traces of
minor merger are found in the lenticular galaxy NGC 85. Basing on the last two
points, we conclude that the most probable mechanisms for the transformation of
spirals into lenticular galaxies in groups are gravitational ones, namely,
minor mergers and tidal interactions.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, slightly improved version of the paper published

Surface circulation in the Liguro-Provençal basin as measured by satellite-tracked drifters (2007-2009)
The surface circulation in the Liguro-Provençal basin (Northwestern Mediterranean)
is studied using satellite-tracked drifters in 2007-2009. Complex circulation patterns
prevailed in the eastern Ligurian Sea, before the drifters eventually joined the
Northern Current (NC) in the coastal area off Genoa. Between 5°E and 7°E30’, most
drifters were advected offshore before heading to the east and eventually closing a
basin-wide cyclonic circulation. This offshore turning is related to the wind and wind
stress curl during Mistral events. Although the Western Corsican Current was well
delineated by the drifters, no signature of the Eastern Corsican Current was shown,
indicating limited connectivity between the Tyrrhenian and Ligurian seas in summer
2007. Pseudo-Eulerian velocity statistics were calculated in the coastal region
extending between Genoa and the Gulf of Lyons. Fast currents are evident on the
shelf break, especially off Imperia (maximum of 90 cm/s) where the bathymetric
slope is larger and the NC is closer to shore and narrower. In contrast, a stagnation
area inshore of the NC near Fréjus is characterized by little mean flow and low
velocity fluctuations. Mean currents are also reduced off Menton-Nice where the
variability is maximum. More to the west, the NC broadens and slightly reduces in
strength
Colloidal stability of tannins: astringency, wine tasting and beyond
Tannin-tannin and tannin-protein interactions in water-ethanol solvent
mixtures are studied in the context of red wine tasting. While tannin
self-aggregation is relevant for visual aspect of wine tasting (limpidity and
related colloidal phenomena), tannin affinities for salivary proline-rich
proteins is fundamental for a wide spectrum of organoleptic properties related
to astringency. Tannin-tannin interactions are analyzed in water-ethanol
wine-like solvents and the precipitation map is constructed for a typical grape
tannin. The interaction between tannins and human salivary proline-rich
proteins (PRP) are investigated in the framework of the shell model for
micellization, known for describing tannin-induced aggregation of beta-casein.
Tannin-assisted micellization and compaction of proteins observed by SAXS are
described quantitatively and discussed in the case of astringency
Monitoring international migration flows in Europe. Towards a statistical data base combining data from different sources
The paper reviews techniques developed in demography, geography and statistics that are useful for bridging the gap between available data on international migration flows and the information required for policy making and research. The basic idea of the paper is as follows: to establish a coherent and consistent data base that contains sufficiently detailed, up-to-date and accurate information, data from several sources should be combined. That raises issues of definition and measurement, and of how to combine data from different origins properly. The issues may be tackled more easily if the statistics that are being compiled are viewed as different outcomes or manifestations of underlying stochastic processes governing migration. The link between the processes and their outcomes is described by models, the parameters of which must be estimated from the available data. That may be done within the context of socio-demographic accounting. The paper discusses the experience of the U.S. Bureau of the Census in combining migration data from several sources. It also summarizes the many efforts in Europe to establish a coherent and consistent data base on international migration.
