Resonant tunneling in a Luttinger liquid for arbitrary barrier transmission
A numerically exact dynamical quantum Monte Carlo approach has been developed
and applied to transport through a double barrier in a Luttinger liquid with
arbitrary transmission. For strong transmission, we find broad Fabry-Perot
Coulomb blockade peaks, with a lineshape parametrized by a single parameter,
but at sufficiently low temperatures, non-Lorentzian universal lineshapes
characteristic of coherent resonant tunneling emerge, even for strong
interactions. For weak transmission, our data supports the recently proposed
correlated sequential tunneling picture and is consistent with experimental
results on intrinsic nanotube dots.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Damper reduces effects of resonance on force transducer
Viscous-film damper eliminates response lag of resonance generated noise when inserted into the thrust measuring system. This technique can be applied to automated devices when pulsed force or low order impact is involved, and where signal noise is produced by stopping or reversal of mechanical travel or by water hammer
Racetrack inflation with matter fields and cosmic strings
We consider the coupling of racetrack inflation to matter fields as realized in the D3/D7 brane system. In particular, we investigate the possibility of cosmic string formation in this system. We find that strings can form before or at the onset of racetrack inflation is possible, but they are then inflated away. Furthermore, string formation at the end of inflation is prevented by the presence of the moduli sector. As a consequence, no strings survive racetrack inflation
Muon Pair Production by Electron-Photon Scatterings
The cross section for muon pair productions by electrons scattering over
photons, , is calculated analytically in the leading order. It is
pointed out that for the center-of-mass energy range, ,
the cross section for is less than b. The differential
energy spectrum for either of the resulting muons is given for the purpose of
high-energy neutrino astronomy. An implication of our result for a recent
suggestion concerning the high-energy cosmic neutrino generation through this
muon pair is discussed.Comment: a comment added, to appear in Phys. Rev. D, Rapid Communicatio
Longevity of supersymmetric flat directions
We examine the fate of supersymmetric flat directions. We argue that the
non-perturbative decay of the flat direction via preheating is an unlikely
event. In order to address this issue, first we identify the physical degrees
of freedom and their masses in presence of a large flat direction VEV (Vacuum
Expectation Value). We explicitly show that the (complex) flat direction and
its fermionic partner are the only light {\it physical} fields in the spectrum.
If the flat direction VEV is much larger than the weak scale, and it has a
rotational motion, there will be no resonant particle production at all. The
case of multiple flat directions is more involved. We illustrate that in many
cases of physical interest, the situation becomes effectively the same as that
of a single flat direction, or collection of independent single directions. In
such cases preheating is not relevant. In an absence of a fast non-perturbative
decay, the flat direction survives long enough to affect thermalization in
supersymmetric models as described in hep-ph/0505050 and hep-ph/0512227. It can
also ``terminate'' an early stage of non-perturbative inflaton decay as
discussed in hep-ph/0603244.Comment: 9 revtex pages, v3: expanded discussion on two flat directions, minor

Intrinsic Coulomb blockade in multi-wall carbon nanotubes
Carbon nanotubes provide a new class of molecular wires that display new and
exciting mesoscopic transport properties. We provide a detailed theoretical
description for transport in multi-wall nanotubes, where both disorder and
strong interactions are important. The interplay of both aspects leads to a
particularly effective intrinsic Coulomb blockade for tunneling. The relation
to recent experiments is discussed.Comment: 13 pages, incl 2 figs, for: Special issue "Transport in Molecular

Aspects of warm-flat directions
Considering the mechanism of dissipative slow-roll that has been used in warm
inflation scenario, we show that dissipation may alter usual cosmological
scenarios associated with SUSY-flat directions. We mainly consider SUSY-flat
directions that have strong interactions with non-flat directions and may cause
strong dissipation both in thermal and non-thermal backgrounds. An example is
the Affleck-Dine mechanism in which dissipation may create significant (both
qualitative and quantitative) discrepancies between the conventional scenario
and the dissipative one. We also discuss several mechanisms of generating
curvature perturbations in which the dissipative field, which is distinguished
from the inflaton field, can be used as the source of cosmological
perturbations. Considering the Morikawa-Sasaki dissipative coefficient, the
damping caused by the dissipation may be significant for many MSSM flat
directions even if the dissipation is far from thermal equilibrium.Comment: 22 pages, accepted for publication in International Journal of Modern

Early versus late initiation of GH replacement in adult-onset hypopituitarism
Introduction: Adult-onset growth hormone deficiency (AGHD) is usually the last deficiency to be substituted in hypopituitarism. In children with documented GH deficiency, treatment without delay is crucial for achieving optimal effects on growth and development. In adults, it is not known whether a delay in treatment initiation influences biochemical response and the favourable physiological effects resulting from GH replacement therapy (GHRT). Methods: A total of 1085 GH-deficient adults from KIMS (Pfizer International Metabolic Database) were included, adequately replaced with all pituitary hormones except for GH at baseline. Patients were stratified by sex and age (20–50 years and ≥50 years) and subsequently divided into two groups below and above the median duration of unsubstituted AGHD for that subgroup. The median time of unsubstituted GHD for the total cohort was 2.53 years (P5 = 0.35, P95 = 24.42). Results: Beneficial effects of 4 years of GHRT were observed on lipids and quality of life iall subgroups. A decrease in waist circumference was observed only in older (>50 years) patients. There was no difference in IGF-I SDS and in GH dose required to normalize IGF-I in patients with a duration of unsubstituted AGHD above or below the median. No relevant differences were found between the groups for anthropometric measures, cardiovascular risk factors and quality of life scores. Conclusion: In contrast to GHD in children and adolescents, no difference could be established in treatment response between early or late initiation of GHRT in AGHD in terms of required GH dose, IGF-I, metabolic health and quality of life
