The quantum maxima for the basic graphs of exclusivity are not reachable in Bell scenarios
A necessary condition for the probabilities of a set of events to exhibit
Bell nonlocality or Kochen-Specker contextuality is that the graph of
exclusivity of the events contains induced odd cycles with five or more
vertices, called odd holes, or their complements, called odd antiholes. From
this perspective, events whose graph of exclusivity are odd holes or antiholes
are the building blocks of contextuality. For any odd hole or antihole, any
assignment of probabilities allowed by quantum mechanics can be achieved in
specific contextuality scenarios. However, here we prove that, for any odd
hole, the probabilities that attain the quantum maxima cannot be achieved in
Bell scenarios. We also prove it for the simplest odd antiholes. This leads us
to the conjecture that the quantum maxima for any of the building blocks cannot
be achieved in Bell scenarios. This result sheds light on why the problem of
whether a probability assignment is quantum is decidable, while whether a
probability assignment within a given Bell scenario is quantum is, in general,
undecidable. This also helps to undertand why identifying principles for
quantum correlations is simpler when we start by identifying principles for
quantum sets of probabilities defined with no reference to specific scenarios.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Forensic genetic analysis of South Portuguese population with the six dye Powerplex® Fusion 6C
Poster apresentado no 28th Congress of International Society For Forensic Genetics (ISFG 2019), Praga, República Checa, 9-13 de Setembro de 2019As an improvement in efficiency and in Human Discrimination Power, the new six dye multiplex kit PowerPlex® Fusion 6C System, by Promega, available for human identification can co-amplify 27 loci, in a single reaction, have been introduced in the last years with great success. This kit allows the amplification and detection of autosomal loci included in the expanded Combined DNA Index System CODIS, plus the loci Penta D, PENTA E and SE33 as well as Amelogenin for gender determination. Furthermore, this kit includes three Y –STRs (DYS391, DYS576 and DYS570), allowing allelic attribution in a total of 27 loci. This genetic markers extension satisfies not only CODIS but also European Standard Set recommendations. Thinking about continuous human migration movements, especially in a very cosmopolitan region like Lisbon and south of Portugal, and also, in keeping population studies and actualized STR databases we decided to update our previous studies. Our sample is composed of 600 unrelated individuals, from paternity testing with laboratory identity anonymised. DNA was extracted by Prep-n-go BufferTM(Thermo-Fisher Scientific). PCR amplification was performed with PowerPlex® Fusion 6C System, according to manufacturer’s guidelines. Fragment analysis was carried out in an Applied Biosystems® 3500 Genetic Analyser. Electrophoresis results were analysed with GeneMapper® ID-X v1.4.
Allele frequencies and population statistics, including Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium p-values from exact test probabilities and forensic parameters were calculated with adequate software.
In conclusion, our population information was updated in order to apply most recent data in our casework weight of evidence.N/
QUANTIFILER®TRIO DNA method performance in a collection of ancient samples
Trabalho cientÃfico apresentado sob a forma de Poster no evento 9th ISABS Conference on Forensic Anthropologic Genetics and Mayo Clinicm Bol, Island of Brac, Croacia, 2015During the past few years significant progress has been made in solving technical challenges associated with STR profiling including the ability to analyze degraded DNA and low amounts of DNA. The result of these changes is that useful STR profiles can now be obtained from previously untypeable forensic DNA samples.
Analysis of DNA from ancient material represents an important role in molecular anthropology, although there are many limitations concerning low DNA quantity and/or degraded DNA, and/or PCR inhibitors. These factors can make it difficult to decide whether to continue with STR analysis, which STR panel to use and how much DNA to add to PCR reaction. With all these constraints, DNA quantification represents an important tool to decide which method will follow in order to improve workflow and have good results in less time-consuming.
The Quantifiler® Trio DNA method provides a quality index (QI) to detect the presence of degraded DNA along with PCR inhibitors. This guide allows the selection of the optimal short tandem repeat (STR) analysis chemistry (autosomal, or miniSTR) and streamlines the workflow while increasing downstream analysis success rates.
In order to compare DNA quality from different extraction methods, samples from 46 exhumed Middle Ages individuals were extracted with modified phenol-chloroform method and also PrepFiler Express BTAâ„¢ method.
DNA was quantified with Quantifiler® Trio DNA Quantification in an Applied Biosystems® 7500 Real-Time PCR System. Results were analyzed and allow us to point Quantifiler® Trio method as an important tool in pre-STR typing methods in ancient samplesN/
A review of the evidence on cognitive, functional and behavioral assessment for the diagnosis of dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is presented with revision and broadening of the recommendations on the use of tests and batteries in Brazil for the diagnosis of dementia due to AD. A systematic review of the literature (MEDLINE, LILACS and SCIELO database) was carried out by a panel of experts. Studies on the validation and/or adaptation of tests, scales and batteries for the Brazilian population were analyzed and classified according to level of evidence. There were sufficient data to recommend the IQCODE, DAFS-R, DAD, ADL-Q and Bayer scale for the evaluation of instrumental activities of daily living, and the Katz scale for the assessment of basic activities of daily living. For the evaluation of neuropsychiatric symptoms, the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) and the CAMDEX were found to be useful, as was the Cornell scale for depression in dementia. The MiniMental State Examination has clinical utility as a screening test, as do the multifunctional batteries (CAMCOG-R, ADAS-COG, CERAD and MDRS) for brief evaluations of several cognitive domains. There was sufficient evidence to recommend the CDR scale for clinical and severity assessment of dementia. Tests for Brazilian Portuguese are recommended by cognitive domain based on available data.
Abundances of Mn, Co and Eu in a sample of 20 F-G disk stars: the influence of hyperfine structure splitting
We present Mn, Co and Eu abundances for a sample of 20 disk F and G dwarfs
and subgiants with metallicities in the range -0.8 <= [Fe/H] <= +0.3. We
investigate the influence of hyperfine structure (HFS) on the derived
abundances of Mn and Co by using HFS data from different sources in the
literature, as well as calculated HFS from interaction factors A and B. Eu
abundances were obtained from spectral synthesis of one Eu II line that takes
into account HFS from a series of recent laboratory measurements. For the lines
analyzed in this study, we find that for manganese, the differences between
abundances obtained with different HFSs are no larger than 0.10 dex. Our cobalt
abundances are even less sensitive to the choice of HFS than Mn, presenting a
0.07 dex maximum difference between determinations with different HFSs.
However, the cobalt HFS data from different sources are significantly
different. Our abundance results for Mn offer an independent confirmation of
the results from Prochaska & McWilliam (2000), who favour type Ia supernovae as
the main nucleosynthesis site of Mn production, in contrast to trends of Mn
versus metallicity previously reported in the literature. For Co, we obtain
[Co/Fe] ~ 0.0 in the range -0.3 < [Fe/H] < +0.3 and [Co/Fe] rising to a level
of +0.2 when [Fe/H] decreases from -0.3 to -0.8, in disagreement with recent
results in the literature. The observed discrepancies may be attributed to the
lack of HFS in the works we used for comparison. Our results for Eu are in
accordance with low-mass type II supernovae being the main site of the
r-process nucleosynthesis.Comment: 8 pages, 6 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy
