Reliability study of refractory gate gallium arsenide MESFETS
Refractory gate MESFET's were fabricated as an alternative to aluminum gate devices, which have been found to be unreliable as RF power amplifiers. In order to determine the reliability of the new structures, statistics of failure and information about mechanisms of failure in refractory gate MESFET's are given. Test transistors were stressed under conditions of high temperature and forward gate current to enhance failure. Results of work at 150 C and 275 C are reported
Brane world creation from flat or almost flat space in dynamical tension string theories
There is great interest in the construction of brane worlds, where matter and
gravity are forced to be effective only in a lower dimensional surface , the
brane . How these could appear as a consequence of string theory is a crucial
question and this has been widely discussed. Here we will examine a distinct
scenario that appears in dynamical tension theories and where string tension is
positive between two surfaces separated by a short distance and at the two
surfaces themselves the string tensions become infinite, therefore producing an
effective confinement of the strings and therefore of all matter and gravity to
the space between these to surfaces, which is in fact a new type of stringy
brane world scenario. The basic formulation for obtaining this scenario consist
of assuming two types of strings characterized by a different constant of
integration related to the spontaneous string tension generation. These string
tension multiplied by the embedding metric define conformally related metrics
that both satisfy Einsteins equation. The braneworlds appear very naturally
when these two metrics are both flat spaces related by a special conformal
transformation. The two types of string tensions are determined and they blow
up at two close expanding surfaces. A puzzling aspect appears then: the
construction is based on flat spaces, but then there are also strings with very
large tension near the boundaries of the braneworld,so can the back reaction
from the infinite tension strings destroy the flat space background?.
Fortunatelly that can be resolved using the mechanism Universe creation from
almost flat (or empty) spaces, which incorporates a gas of very large string
tensions in a membrane, studied before in 1+1 membranes in a 2+1 embedding
space and now is generalized for a 1+(D-2) membrane moving in a 1+(D-1) space.Comment: Motivated on our previous paper, arXiv:2107.08005 [hep-th], we study
a gravity picture that allows to understand those results from a different
angle, 1O pages, typos corrected, a subsection eliminated. This is the final

Child externalising and internalising behaviour and parental wellbeing during the Covid-19 pandemic
In this study we surveyed families' experiences with parental depression, stress, relationship conflict and child behavioural issues during 6 months of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic through the Covid-19: Global Social Trust and Mental Health Study. The current analyses used data collected from online surveys completed by adults in 66 countries from 17 April 2020 to 13 July 2020 (Wave I), followed by surveys 6 months later at Wave II (17 October 2020-31 January 2021). Analyses were limited to 175 adult parents who reported living with at least one child under 18 years old at Wave I. Parents reported on children's level of externalising and internalising behaviour at Wave I. At Wave II, parents completed self-reported measures of stress, depression and inter-partner conflict. Child externalising behaviour at Wave I significantly predicted higher levels of parental stress at Wave II, controlling for covariates. Child internalising behaviour at Wave I did not predict parental stress or depression, controlling for covariates. Neither child externalising nor internalising behaviour predicted parental relationship conflict. The overall findings demonstrate that child behaviour likely influenced parental stress during the Covid-19 pandemic. Findings suggest that mental health interventions for children and parents may improve the family system during times of disaster

A miniaturized digital telemetry system for physiological data transmission
A physiological date telemetry system, consisting basically of a portable unit and a ground base station was designed, built, and tested. The portable unit to be worn by the subject is composed of a single crystal controlled transmitter with AM transmission of digital data and narrowband FM transmission of voice; a crystal controlled FM receiver; thirteen input channels follwed by a PCM encoder (three of these channels are designed for ECG data); a calibration unit; and a transponder control system. The ground base station consists of a standard telemetry reciever, a decoder, and an FM transmitter for transmission of voice and transponder signals to the portable unit. The ground base station has complete control of power to all subsystems in the portable unit. The phase-locked loop circuit which is used to decode the data, remains in operation even when the signal from the portable unit is interrupted
The cell biology of Listeria monocytogenes infection: the intersection of bacterial pathogenesis and cell-mediated immunity
Listeria monocytogenes has emerged as a remarkably tractable pathogen to dissect basic aspects of cell biology, intracellular pathogenesis, and innate and acquired immunity. In order to maintain its intracellular lifestyle, L. monocytogenes has evolved a number of mechanisms to exploit host processes to grow and spread cell to cell without damaging the host cell. The pore-forming protein listeriolysin O mediates escape from host vacuoles and utilizes multiple fail-safe mechanisms to avoid causing toxicity to infected cells. Once in the cytosol, the L. monocytogenes ActA protein recruits host cell Arp2/3 complexes and enabled/vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein family members to mediate efficient actin-based motility, thereby propelling the bacteria into neighboring cells. Alteration in any of these processes dramatically reduces the ability of the bacteria to establish a productive infection in vivo
The PAMP c-di-AMP Is Essential for Listeria monocytogenes Growth in Rich but Not Minimal Media due to a Toxic Increase in (p)ppGpp
SummaryCyclic di-adenosine monophosphate (c-di-AMP) is a widely distributed second messenger that appears to be essential in multiple bacterial species, including the Gram-positive facultative intracellular pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. In this study, the only L. monocytogenes diadenylate cyclase gene, dacA, was deleted using a Cre-lox system activated during infection of cultured macrophages. All ΔdacA strains recovered from infected cells harbored one or more suppressor mutations that allowed growth in the absence of c-di-AMP. Suppressor mutations in the synthase domain of the bi-functional (p)ppGpp synthase/hydrolase led to reduced (p)ppGpp levels. A genetic assay confirmed that dacA was essential in wild-type but not strains lacking all three (p)ppGpp synthases. Further genetic analysis suggested that c-di-AMP was essential because accumulated (p)ppGpp altered GTP concentrations, thereby inactivating the pleiotropic transcriptional regulator CodY. We propose that c-di-AMP is conditionally essential for metabolic changes that occur in growth in rich medium and host cells but not minimal medium
Frequency of Multiple Paternity in the Spiny Dogfish Squalus acanthias in the Western North Atlantic
Multiple paternity (MP) has been shown to be widespread in elasmobranch fishes although its prevalence and the number of sires per litter vary considerably among species. In the squaloid shark Squalus acanthias, MP has been reported, but whether it is a common feature of the species\u27 reproductive strategy is unknown. In this study, we determined the frequency of MP in 29 litters of S. acanthias sampled from the lower Chesapeake Bay and coastal Virginia waters, using 7 highly polymorphic nuclear DNA microsatellite loci. Only 5 litters (17% of the total) were genetically polyandrous, with at least 2 sires per litter. Litter size increased with female size but was similar between polyandrous and monandrous females
