Detection of mecC-Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates in river water : a potential role for water in the environmental dissemination

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a public health concern due to limited treatment options. The recent description of a mecA homologue, mecC in human and cattle, led to studies to detect this new variant in human and other animal species. Detection of mecC in wild boar and fallow deer in a Spanish game estate led us to further investigate the presence of mecC-MRSA at this location. Samples from cattle, wild animals, workers and river water were tested. A further three mecC-MRSA isolates were obtained from river water. Molecular characterization (multilocus sequence typing and spa typing) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (broth microdilution) showed that isolates were similar to those detected in wild animals. Whole genome sequencing confirmed that the isolates from the river water and wild animals in the same geographic area were all closely related isolates of ST425 mecC-MRSA. The presence of mecC-MRSA in the river water highlights the potential role of water in the dissemination of mecC-MRSA

Multiresistant Salmonella enterica serovar 4,[5],12:i:- in Europe: a new pandemic strain?

A marked increase in the prevalence of S. enterica serovar 4,[5],12:i:- with resistance to ampicillin, streptomycin, sulphonamides and tetracyclines (R-type ASSuT) has been noted in food-borne infections and in pigs/pig meat in several European countries in the last ten years. One hundred and sixteen strains of S. enterica serovar 4,[5],12:i:- from humans, pigs and pig meat isolated in England and Wales, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the Netherlands were further subtyped by phage typing, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multilocus variable number tandem repeat analysis to investigate the genetic relationship among strains. PCR was performed to identify the fljB flagellar gene and the genes encoding resistance to ampicillin, streptomycin, sulphonamides and tetracyclines. Class 1 and 2 integrase genes were also sought. Results indicate that genetically related serovar 4,[5],12:i:- strains of definitive phage types DT193 and DT120 with ampicillin, streptomycin, sulphonamide and tetracycline resistance encoded by blaTEM, strA-strB, sul2 and tet(B) have emerged in several European countries, with pigs the likely reservoir of infection. Control measures are urgently needed to reduce spread of infection to humans via the food chain and thereby prevent the possible pandemic spread of serovar 4,[5],12:i:- of R-type ASSuT as occurred with S. Typhimurium DT104 during the 1990s

Estudio del comportamiento de un STU utilizando fluidos dilatantes

Los STU (Unidades de Transmisión de Choque) son dispositivos antisísmicos de respuesta variable en función la velocidad de aplicación de la carga. Pese a ser dispositivos simples y fiables su uso no está muy extendido debido a la falta de información sobre los mismos. Para su funcionamiento necesitan fluidos no-newtonianos en su interior, y el objetivo de este proyecto es determinar la idoneidad o no de los fluidos dilatantes (STF), aquellos que aumentan su viscosidad con la velocidad de deformación. Al igual que los STU, los fluidos STF son poco conocidos, por lo que también se pretende profundizar en la compresión de los mismos llegando a establecer las bases de su comportamiento. Con ese objetivo se han sintetizado dos fluidos de este tipo para su caracterización reológica, y una vez hecho esto se ha procedido a establecer un modelo numérico del comportamiento de un STU desarrollado por el departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica a partir de los datos obtenidos.Shock Transmission Units (STU) are anti-seismic devices whose response changes with the velocity of the excitation given. Despite being simple and reliable, their use is not widely extended due to the lack of information about them. They contain a non-Newtonian fluid responsible for their behavior. The aim of this project is to determine whether or not Shear Thickening Fluids (STF), those whose viscosity increases as shear rate rises, are suitable for being used in STUs. As is the case with STUs, STFs are not widely known, so another purpose is to deepen in the understanding while laying the groundwork for their behavior. With this purpose, two fluids have been synthetized and then rheologically tested. Ética y TIC

El desarrollo y la utilización de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) representan un reto a la ética, de la misma forma que lo fue cualquier avance tecnológico en cualquier otra época. Nadie duda de que la revolución industrial fuera una etapa necesaria de progreso y que, con todo mérito, forme parte de los cimientos que fundamentan nuestra sociedad. Sin embargo, como ejemplo de esa experiencia histórica, la sociedad victoriana retratada por Charles Dickens refleja unas prácticas terriblemente injustas que no dudaríamos en denunciar como carentes de toda ética. Entonces, ¿existe alguna maldad en el progreso? Evidentemente, no. En nuestra época las TIC son las que representan el progreso, estando presentes en todo cuanto nos rodea, lo impregnan prácticamente todo, interviniendo o en su producción o en su funcionamiento. Las ONG desplazadas en África se valen de las TIC para el desarrollo de su actividad en favor de la ayuda humanitaria, pero también las utilizan los traficantes de armas (aunque con un balance de recursos distinto). La tecnología nunca ha tenido un valor moral en sí misma, es su uso el que le da un carácter perverso, virtuoso o, cuando menos, éticamente pertinente
