Spitzer Observations of NGC 1333: A Study of Structure and Evolution in a Nearby Embedded Cluster
We present a comprehensive analysis of structure in the young, embedded
cluster, NGC 1333 using members identified with Spitzer and 2MASS photometry
based on their IR-excess emission. In total, 137 members are identified in this
way, composed of 39 protostars and 98 more evolved pre-main sequence stars with
disks. Of the latter class, four are transition/debris disk candidates. The
fraction of exposed pre-main sequence stars with disks is 83% +/- 11%, showing
that there is a measurable diskless pre-main sequence population. The sources
in each of the Class I and Class II evolutionary states are shown to have very
different spatial distributions relative to the distribution of the dense gas
in their natal cloud. However, the distribution of nearest neighbor spacings
among these two groups of sources are found to be quite similar, with a strong
peak at spacings of 0.045 pc. Radial and azimuthal density profiles and surface
density maps computed from the identified YSOs show that NGC 1333 is elongated
and not strongly centrally concentrated, confirming previous claims in the
literature. We interpret these new results as signs of a low velocity
dispersion, extremely young cluster that is not in virial equilibrium.Comment: 59 pages, 20 figures, accepted to ApJ, verion with full resolution

High-Mass Proto-Stellar Candidates - I : The Sample and Initial Results
We describe a systematic program aimed at identifying and characterizing
candidate high-mass proto-stellar objects (HMPOs). Our candidate sample
consists of 69 objects selected by criteria based on those established by
Ramesh & Sridharan (1997) using far-infrared, radio-continuum and molecular
line data. Infrared-Astronomical-Satellite (IRAS) and
Midcourse-Space-Experiment (MSX) data were used to study the larger scale
environments of the candidate sources and to determine their total luminosities
and dust temperatures. To derive the physical and chemical properties of our
target regions, we observed continuum and spectral line radiation at millimeter
and radio wavelengths. We imaged the free-free and dust continuum emission at
wavelengths of 3.6 cm and 1.2 mm, respectively, searched for H2O and CH3OH
maser emission and observed the CO 2-1 and several NH3 lines toward all sources
in our sample. Other molecular tracers were observed in a subsample. The
presented results indicate that a substantial fraction of our sample harbors
HMPOs in a pre-UCHII region phase, the earliest known stage in the high-mass
star formation process.Comment: 16 pages, 11 eps-figures. Astrophysical Journal, in pres
Trapped Rydberg Ions: From Spin Chains to Fast Quantum Gates
We study the dynamics of Rydberg ions trapped in a linear Paul trap, and
discuss the properties of ionic Rydberg states in the presence of the static
and time-dependent electric fields constituting the trap. The interactions in a
system of many ions are investigated and coupled equations of the internal
electronic states and the external oscillator modes of a linear ion chain are
derived. We show that strong dipole-dipole interactions among the ions can be
achieved by microwave dressing fields. Using low-angular momentum states with
large quantum defect the internal dynamics can be mapped onto an effective spin
model of a pair of dressed Rydberg states that describes the dynamics of
Rydberg excitations in the ion crystal. We demonstrate that excitation transfer
through the ion chain can be achieved on a nanosecond timescale and discuss the
implementation of a fast two-qubit gate in the ion chain.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure
Modification of radiation pressure due to cooperative scattering of light
Cooperative spontaneous emission of a single photon from a cloud of N atoms
modifies substantially the radiation pressure exerted by a far-detuned laser
beam exciting the atoms. On one hand, the force induced by photon absorption
depends on the collective decay rate of the excited atomic state. On the other
hand, directional spontaneous emission counteracts the recoil induced by the
absorption. We derive an analytical expression for the radiation pressure in
steady-state. For a smooth extended atomic distribution we show that the
radiation pressure depends on the atom number via cooperative scattering and
that, for certain atom numbers, it can be suppressed or enhanced.Comment: 8 pages, 2 Figure
The Interspersed Spin Boson Lattice Model
We describe a family of lattice models that support a new class of quantum
magnetism characterized by correlated spin and bosonic ordering [Phys. Rev.
Lett. 112, 180405 (2014)]. We explore the full phase diagram of the model using
Matrix-Product-State methods. Guided by these numerical results, we describe a
modified variational ansatz to improve our analytic description of the
groundstate at low boson frequencies. Additionally, we introduce an
experimental protocol capable of inferring the low-energy excitations of the
system by means of Fano scattering spectroscopy. Finally, we discuss the
implementation and characterization of this model with current circuit-QED
technology.Comment: Submitted to EPJ ST issue on "Novel Quantum Phases and Mesoscopic

Quantum critical states and phase transitions in the presence of non equilibrium noise
Quantum critical points are characterized by scale invariant correlations and
correspondingly long ranged entanglement. As such, they present fascinating
examples of quantum states of matter, the study of which has been an important
theme in modern physics. Nevertheless very little is known about the fate of
quantum criticality under non equilibrium conditions. In this paper we
investigate the effect of external noise sources on quantum critical points. It
is natural to expect that noise will have a similar effect to finite
temperature, destroying the subtle correlations underlying the quantum critical
behavior. Surprisingly we find that in many interesting situations the
ubiquitous 1/f noise preserves the critical correlations. The emergent states
show intriguing interplay of intrinsic quantum critical and external noise
driven fluctuations. We demonstrate this general phenomenon with specific
examples in solid state and ultracold atomic systems. Moreover our approach
shows that genuine quantum phase transitions can exist even under non
equilibrium conditions.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
Quantum gases in trimerized kagom\'e lattices
We study low temperature properties of atomic gases in trimerized optical
kagom\'{e} lattices. The laser arrangements that can be used to create these
lattices are briefly described. We also present explicit results for the
coupling constants of the generalized Hubbard models that can be realized in
such lattices. In the case of a single component Bose gas the existence of a
Mott insulator phase with fractional numbers of particles per trimer is
verified in a mean field approach. The main emphasis of the paper is on an
atomic spinless interacting Fermi gas in the trimerized kagom\'{e} lattice with
two fermions per site. This system is shown to be described by a quantum spin
1/2 model on the triangular lattice with couplings that depend on the bond
directions. We investigate this model by means of exact diagonalization. Our
key finding is that the system exhibits non-standard properties of a quantum
spin-liquid crystal: it combines planar antiferromagnetic order in the ground
state with an exceptionally large number of low energy excitations. The
possibilities of experimental verification of our theoretical results are
critically discussed.Comment: 19 pages/14 figures, version to appear in Phys. Rev. A., numerous

Discovery of New Milky Way Star Cluster Candidates in the 2MASS Point Source Catalog II. Physical Properties of the Star Cluster CC01
Three new obscured Milky Way clusters were detected as surface density peaks
in the 2MASS point source catalog during our on-going search for hidden
globular clusters and massive Arches-like star clusters. One more cluster was
discovered serendipitously during a visual inspection of the candidates.
The first deep J, H, and Ks imaging of the cluster [IBP2002] CC01 is
presented. We estimated a cluster age of ~1-3 Myr, distance modulus of
(m-M)0=12.56+-0.08 mag (D=3.5 Kpc), and extinction of AV~7.7 mag. We also
derived the initial mass function slope for the cluster: Gamma=-2.23+-0.16. The
integration over the initial mass function yielded a total cluster mass
M_{total}<=1800+-200Msol. CC01 appears to be a regular, not very massive star
cluster, whose formation has probably been induced by the shock front from the
nearby HII region Sh2-228.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted in A&
