Telemedicine and PTSD assessment of veterans: A study of equivalence between videoconferencing (VTC) and face-to-face (FTF) methods

    Get PDF
Telemedicine systems use telecommunications technology to provide health care services to clients with distance barriers to providers. This is relevant for America’s veterans who require services for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but find that these specialty services are not always available locally. This study compared a face-to-face (FTF) Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) interview and a videoconferencing (VTC) administration of the CAPS. Participants were 20 male veterans referred to a veteran’s affairs center for a PTSD assessment. Correlations between assessments ranged from .74 - .92, and statistical equivalence was demonstrated at 90% confidence intervals. Sensitivity of the VTC interview was found to be 94%, and specificity was found to be 33% as compared with the FTF criterion. Additional analyses indicated that a working alliance was established with VTC, and the majority of veterans reported satisfaction with the VTC method and would utilize this technology for service barriers

The following paper is in attempt reveal, analyze and explain the effects the North American Free Trade Agreement specifically along the US-Mexican border region. Starting with the agreement itself, the ratification, and the elements surrounding its implementation, this paper will then move through analyzing the quantitative and qualitative effects NAFTA has had along the border region of the United States and Mexico. Taking those effects, the comparison enshrined in the title: whether free trade frees people (free as in a better life) will be tested and analyzed for a possible grading the results of NAFTA has had. Finally, the future of this legislation will be discussed for its saliency in modern politics, and its jeopardy of continuing are an interesting backdrop to the legislation itself

Predictors of help-seeking in returning Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) veterans

Despite a significant number of Afghanistan and Iraqi veterans who reported symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, the majority of these veterans did not seek help for these problems. Past research has shown several variables that may contribute to an individual seeking help for a mental health problem including demographic variables, nature and severity of the mental health problem, and psychological variables. All Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) veterans and service members that registered with the Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System between 2001 and 2007 were contacted by mail and asked to participate in the Internet-based survey. Participants were asked to complete several questionnaires regarding their current physical and psychological health, social support, self-efficacy, stigma, and barriers relating to seeking help for a psychological or physical problem as well as informal and formal help-seeking patterns. The primary goal of this study was to examine predictors of help-seeking for a psychological problem within the framework of a new model of help-seeking. Results indicated a significant model fit in the multiple linear regression analyses for help-seeking intentions; however, results were not strong in the logistic analyses for past help-seeking behavior. Interestingly, the independent variable, attitudes toward seeking mental health services, was a significant coefficient in all psychological and physical help-seeking models. Implications for this population regarding assessment, outreach, and program development are discussed

Educators\u27 support of the cultivation of self-determination and self-advocacy of students with disabilities

    Get PDF
In a society that appears to take independence for granted at times, it has become more and more of a necessity for educators to combat this trend and foster independence within students. One way educators can foster independence is by supporting the cultivation of self-determination and self-advocacy within students during the school-age years. As part of this project, a literature review was conducted to compile the components of self-determination and self-advocacy of students with learning disabilities and mild cognitive impairments. Working definitions of these two attributes were then created from these components. This project will explore the cultivation of self-determination and self-advocacy within students through strategies involving classroom culture, classroom expectations, teacher-family communication, student-led Individualized Education Programs (IEP), and strategic lesson planning

El seviche, los anticuchos, los tamales y la mazamorra en las Tradiciones de Ricardo Palma

This research work refers to the information offered by Don Ricardo Palma, in his Traditions, on four emblematic dishes of Peruvian cuisine: the seviche, the anticuchos, and the tamales, as well as the sweet mazamorra. The name of the tradition in which each reference appears is indicated, and data offered by other authors of long ago are added. Also, to rescue the old recipes for preparing the dishes mentioned, we include these, which we have taken from authors of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Keywords: Ricardo Palma, Traditions, Peruvian Cuisine, History of Peru, seviche, anticuchos, tamales, mazamorra, recipes of Peruvian cuisine of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Precision medicine in heart failure no longer a visual theory but a realistic opportunity

    Get PDF
Over the last decades, major advances in the understanding of pathophysiology in a wide spectrum of cardiovascular diseases provided several effective pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies [1]. Along with novel rehabilitation and follow up strategies, these advances have improved the survival rate of cardiac diseases, globally, and contributed generally to a significant increase in life expectancy [2]. As a consequence, there is a parallel increase of patients suffering from challenging and multifaceted syndromes such as heart failure (HF). HF is a recognised pandemic disease, with a progressively increasing prevalence in the aging population [3]. It is a major public health issue, considering both its social and economic implications. HF patients are characterised by a high level of complexity because of the advanced age and the presence of multiple relevant comorbidities requiring dedicated polytherapy [1]. Therefore, overall mortality of HF patients is still unacceptably high, exceeding that of several neoplasms, carrying a risk of approximately 10% at 12 months from clinical onset [4]

Non-contact direct measurement of the magnetocaloric effect in thin samples

    Get PDF
An experimental setup, based on a non-contact temperature sensor, is proposed to directly measure the magnetocaloric effect of samples few micrometers thick. The measurement of the adiabatic temperature change of foils and ribbons is fundamental to design innovative devices based on magnetocaloric thin materials or micro-structuring bulk samples. The reliability of the proposed setup is demonstrated by comparing the measurements performed on a bulk gadolinium sample with the results obtained by an experimental setup based on a Cernox bare chip thermoresistance and by in-field differential scanning calorimetry. We show that this technique can measure the adiabatic temperature variation on gadolinium sheets as thin as 27 ”m. Heat transfer simulations are added to describe the capability of the presented technique
