    Focusing in Multiwell Potentials: Applications to Ion Channels

    We investigate out of equilibrium stationary distributions induced by a stochastic dichotomous noise on double and multi-well models for ion channels. Ion-channel dynamics is analyzed both through over-damped Langevin equations and master equations. As a consequence of the external stochastic noise, we prove a non trivial focusing effect, namely the probability distribution is concentrated only on one state of the multi-well model. We also show that this focusing effect, which occurs at physiological conditions, cannot be predicted by a simple master equation approach.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    An accurate diagnosis of clinically distinct subgroups of aggressive mature B cell lymphomas is crucial for the choice of proper treatment. Presently, precise recognition of these disorders relies on the combination of morphological, immunophenotypical, and cytogenetic/molecular features. The diagnostic workup in such situations implies the application of costly and time-consuming analyses, which are not always required, since an intensified treatment option is reasonably reserved to fit patients. The Italian Group of Haematopathology proposes herein a practical algorithm for the diagnosis of aggressive mature B cell lymphomas based on a stepwise approach, aimed to select cases deserving molecular analysis, in order to optimize time and resources still assuring the optimal management for any patient

    Ultrafast dynamics in unaligned MWCNTs decorated with metal nanoparticles

    The relaxation dynamics of unaligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes decorated with metallic nanoparticles have been studied by using transient optical measurements. The fast dynamics due to the short-lived free-charge carriers excited by the pump are not affected by the presence of nanoparticles. Conversely, a second long dynamics, absent in bare carbon nanotubes, appears only in the decorated samples. A combination of experiment and theory allows us to ascribe this long dynamics to relaxation channels involving electronic states localized at the tube-nanoparticle interface

    Monitoring environmental catastrophe area through change detection techniques

    The use of satellite images has been very effective for monitoring the dynamics of the land use and occupation over time. For this purpose , the change detection techniques have been strong allies. These techniques have multiple complexities depending on the objective to be achieved. This study aims to evaluate the technique for land use and land cover changing detection in areas affected by the environmental disaster of November 2008 in the region of Morro do BaĂş, Santa Catarina, Brazil. A total of 04 (four) images from different dates between 1992 and 2009 (post-disaster) were used. The images were processed in vegetation index using bands 7 and 4 in order to minimize atmospheric and radiometric distortions. Shadow mask, construted from the digital terrain model, was developed to avoid false changes caused by shade. It was concluded that the georeferencing must be very accurate in applying these techniques. The vegetation index by using bands 7 and 4and the shadow mask, were effective in minimizing false changes. It showed that the techniques applied are effective to detect changes in areas affected by the disaster

    SUMMARY During the development of the GIFT (Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia) strain in Philippines sperm was frozen from a sample of males from founder stocks and subsequent generations. In this paper a comparison of progeny performance produced from cryopreserved sperm from the base population of the GIFT strain, with progeny from freshly colleted sperm from the ninth generation produced in Malaysia was conducted. Differences in performance were used to estimate the genetic change over these nine generations. GIFT proved to be a highly improved strain that had at least a 63 per cent advantage in growth rate accumulated over nine generations of non-continuous selection

    LRRK2 G2019S kinase activity triggers neurotoxic NSF aggregation

    Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by the progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons within the substantia nigra pars compacta and the presence of protein aggregates in surviving neurons. LRRK2 G2019S mutation is one of the major determinants of familial PD cases and leads to late-onset PD with pleomorphic pathology, including alpha-synuclein accumulation and deposition of protein inclusions. We demonstrated that LRRK2 phosphorylates N-ethylmaleimide sensitive factor (NSF). We observed aggregates containing NSF in basal ganglia specimens from G2019S carrier PD patients and in cellular and animal models expressing the LRRK2 G2019S variant. We found that LRRK2 G2019S kinase activity induces the accumulation of NSF in toxic aggregates. Noteworthy, the induction of autophagy cleared NSF aggregation and rescued motor and cognitive impairment observed in aged hG2019S BAC mice. We suggest that LRRK2 G2019S pathological phosphorylation hampers substrate catabolism, thus causing the formation of cytotoxic protein inclusions

    Transapical off-pump echo-guided mitral valve repair with neochordae implantation mid-term outcomes

    Background: The NeoChord echo-guided transapical beating heart repair is a promising early-stage minimally invasive surgical procedure for degenerative mitral valve (MV) regurgitation (DMR) correction. The technique has been improved since its inception following procedure standardization, patient selection optimization, and learning curve stabilization. We hereby present the mid-term clinical results through three years of our large single center experience. Methods: All consecutive patients with severe symptomatic DMR due to prolapse or flail of one or both mitral leaflets that underwent the NeoChord procedure between November 2013 and June 2019 were included. Patients were categorized according to MV anatomy; Type A isolated central posterior leaflet prolapse and/or flail, Type B posterior multi-segment prolapse and/or flail, Type C anterior and/or bi-leaflet prolapse or flail, Type D paracommissural prolapse and/or flail and/or significant leaflet and/or annular calcifications. Patients underwent clinical and echocardiographic follow-up at one, three, six, twelve months and yearly thereafter. Clinical outcomes and the composite primary endpoint (patient success) were defined according to Mitral Valve Academic Research Consortium (MVARC) criteria. Mitral regurgitation (MR) severity was graded as absent, mild, moderate and severe according to American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) and European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines. Results: Two hundred and three patients were included; median follow-up was 24 months [interquartile range (IQR), 9–36]. Median age was 64 years (IQR, 54–74 years), median Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Predicted Risk of Mortality (PROM) was 0.60% (IQR, 0.32–1.44%). There were 106 Type A patients (52.2%), 68 Type B (33.5%), 16 Type C (7.9%), and 13 Type D (6.4%). Kaplan-Meier estimate of survival was 99.0%±0.7% at one and two years and 94.0%±2.9% at three years. At one-year follow-up patient success was 91.2%±2.0% and 111 patients (74%) presented a residual MR mild or less (1+). At three-year follow-up patient success was 81.2%±3.8% and 32 patients (64%) had a residual MR mild or less (1+). Patient success was significantly different according to anatomical type (P=0.001). Echocardiographic analysis showed a significant acute left ventricle and left atrial reverse remodeling that was maintained up to three years. Conclusions: The NeoChord echo-guided transapical beating heart repair procedure demonstrated good clinical outcomes and echocardiographic results up to three-year follow-up

    The ISIS Project: Indications for Future Near-Earth Plasma Studies through Future Galileo Satellites

    The Earth’s plasmasphere variability is a consequence of the Sun’s forcing, determining our planet’s space weather. Plasmaspheric dynamics could be entirely caught only by studying together global and local proxies of the state of this extended system. The ISIS project (Inter-Satellite & In Situ plasmaspheric monitoring and modelling) aimed to design a system for the continuous monitoring of the Earth’s plasmasphere based on the future Galileo satellites. The efforts and expertise of ISC-CNR (Institute for Complex Systems of the National Research Council of Italy), INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia) and TAS-I (Thales Alenia Space - Italy) were put together in this work of assessment. ISIS Team proposed new experimental facilities of the Galileo satellites, designed to realize inter-satellite and in situ measurements to monitor global and local quantities; in particular, a scalable system of Langmuir probes was suggested, while the TEC along all possible inter-satellite ray paths throughout the plasmasphere could be monitored via phase- and group-delay analysis of inter-satellite radio signals
