    An exact master equation for the system-reservoir dynamics under the strong coupling regime and non-Markovian dynamics

    In this paper we present a method to derive an exact master equation for a bosonic system coupled to a set of other bosonic systems, which plays the role of the reservoir, under the strong coupling regime, i.e., without resorting to either the rotating-wave or secular approximations. Working with phase-space distribution functions, we verify that the dynamics are separated in the evolution of its center, which follows classical mechanics, and its shape, which becomes distorted. This is the generalization of a result by Glauber, who stated that coherent states remain coherent under certain circumstances, specifically when the rotating-wave approximation and a zero-temperature reservoir are used. We show that the counter-rotating terms generate fluctuations that distort the vacuum state, much the same as thermal fluctuations.Finally, we discuss conditions for non-Markovian dynamics

    Stage of detection and number of sprays for controlling soybean rust

    During winter extension meetings, three of the most common questions asked about Asian soybean rust were: when will soybean rust show up in the northern United States; how early should a spray application be made; and how many sprays would be needed. It is incorrect that once soybean rust outbreaks occur in coastal regions of the Gulf of Mexico, the disease can be airborne to Iowa within 2 to 3 days and defoliate soybeans in a week or two if no chemical is applied immediately after the spores arrive. Another recent question is whether spraying at the vegetative growth stage is needed. To address all these questions, we need to know the most likely stage of soybean rust when it appears in the United States

Because of the dry weather conditions that prevailed during the 2005 growing season, one cannot draw a meaningful conclusion.     Moderating effect of economic instability in the relationship between concentration of control and market value: empirical evidence in Latin America

    This paper investigates the moderating effect of economic instability in the relationship between the concentration of control and market value of firms. For this purpose, we built an unbalanced panel dataset composed of 341 Latin American companies from six countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. The results of the dynamic models, estimated using the systemic generalized method of moments, indicate, in general, that concentration of control only reduces the market value of firms in environments with high economic instability. Thus, this study provides empirical evidence that times of economic instability encourage controlling shareholders to act even more strongly in their own interests, which may result in the expropriation of the wealth of smaller shareholders.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    APPLICATIONS OF VORONOI AND DELAUNAY DIAGRAMS IN THE SOLUTION OF THE GEODETIC BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM

    Voronoi and Delaunay structures are presented as discretization tools to be used innumerical surface integration aiming the computation of geodetic problemssolutions, when under the integral there is a non-analytical function (e. g., gravityanomaly and height). In the Voronoi approach, the target area is partitioned intopolygons which contain the observed point and no interpolation is necessary, onlythe original data is used. In the Delaunay approach, the observed points are verticesof triangular cells and the value for a cell is interpolated for its barycenter. If theamount and distribution of the observed points are adequate, gridding operation isnot required and the numerical surface integration is carried out by point-wise. Evenwhen the amount and distribution of the observed points are not enough, thestructures of Voronoi and Delaunay can combine grid with observed points in orderto preserve the integrity of the original information. Both schemes are applied to thecomputation of the Stokes’ integral, the terrain correction, the indirect effect and thegradient of the gravity anomaly, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil area

    Path Integral Approach to Strongly Nonlinear Composite

    We study strongly nonlinear disordered media using a functional method. We solve exactly the problem of a nonlinear impurity in a linear host and we obtain a Bruggeman-like formula for the effective nonlinear susceptibility. This formula reduces to the usual Bruggeman effective medium approximation in the linear case and has the following features: (i) It reproduces the weak contrast expansion to the second order and (ii) the effective medium exponent near the percolation threshold are s=1s=1, t=1+κt=1+\kappa, where κ\kappa is the nonlinearity exponent.     Do the words matter? An analysis of the linguistic sentiment of earnings conference calls and abnormal stock returns in brazilian companies

    In finance and accounting literature, different aspects are presented as possible factors related to stock returns. More recently, studies have been dedicated to analyzing the potential influence of the tone and sentiment of corporate reports, newspaper articles, press releases, and investor message boards on stock prices. Thus, based on assumptions of Legitimacy Theory, we investigate whether cumulative abnormal returns (CAR) on the stocks of Brazilian listed companies are associated with the linguistic sentiment of quarterly earnings conference calls. Using a sample of 78 observations related to the conference calls of 24 companies listed in the Novo Mercado segment in 2016-2017, we measured CAR using the market model and the linguistic sentiment of earnings conference calls using IBM’s Watson Natural Language Understanding platform. An analysis of the results of statistical tests such as descriptive results, correlation matrix, and correspondence analysis enables it to be inferred that, in general, there is a positive association between cumulative abnormal returns and the optimism sentiment of quarterly conference calls. Thus, it is conjectured the possibility that the speeches made by managers in conference calls legitimize company performance in the market, by altering the perception of investors in the stock market and leading to implications for the value of the stocks traded.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Models and applications for risk assessment and prediction of Asian soybean rust epidemics

    Asian rust of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merril] is one of the most important fungal diseases of this crop worldwide. The recent introduction of Phakopsora pachyrhiziSyd. & P. Syd in the Americas represents a major threat to soybean production in the main growing regions, and significant losses have already been reported. P. pachyrhizi is extremely aggressive under favorable weather conditions, causing rapid plant defoliation. Epidemiological studies, under both controlled and natural environmental conditions, have been done for several decades with the aim of elucidating factors that affect the disease cycle as a basis for disease modeling. The recent spread of Asian soybean rust to major production regions in the world has promoted new development, testing and application of mathematical models to assess the risk and predict the disease. These efforts have included the integration of new data, epidemiological knowledge, statistical methods, and advances in computer simulation to develop models and systems with different spatial and temporal scales, objectives and audience. In this review, we present a comprehensive discussion on the models and systems that have been tested to predict and assess the risk of Asian soybean rust. Limitations, uncertainties and challenges for modelers are also discussed
