Zrównoważone style życia - ujęcie teoretyczne
In a globalized world a chosen, by an individual or a group, lifestyle does
not make a constatnt element of existance, but just an option, that might be picked on
the basis of social situation, historical moment or geographical placement. Depending on
the fact how deep it is rooted in a recognised value system it may form a less or more
permament shape of everyday life. This rule refers also to lifestyles defined as sustainable
or ecological ones. The process of their creation is linked to a deeper reflection on
what we buy, how we consume and how we organize our everyday activities. It also
depends on a social and cultural capital of groups and individuals. In their analysis,
a reflection on dependence between social and class location of people and a quality
of natural environment they live in appears. A lifestyle, among others, includes such
dimensions of everyday life as: level and character of consumption, ways of spending
free time, character of social contacts or activities connected with health care and wellness.
In the following text chosen aspects of the above are discussed

Czy ponowoczesność potrzebuje utopii?
Katarzyna Ponikowska‑Cichoń confronts a classic notion of utopia, both an escapist one,
dreaming about the past and calling for its restitution and a heroic one referring to the past (referring to both the past and the future), activating both individuals and masses with a modern (postmodern) way of functioning a utopian thinking. The author, claiming bankruptcy of all ideologies in the period of fluid post‑modernity,
at the same time is against dissociating oneself from the category of utopia. She proves that the need to change the world for better still accompanies people and considers an exemplification of reviving religious communities or ecological movements. As Ponikowska‑Cichoń claims, utopias are still present in reality, following the Foucault’s heterotopia
Tożsamość ekologiczna : refleksja socjologiczna
Defining the concept of ecological identity constitutes a certain intellectual challenge due to
its multifaceted nature, as well as the popularity of the term “ecology” itself. The author refers to
the concept of ecological identity, based on theoretical assumptions, among others, Naess’s, Thomashow’s,
Urry’s, or Singer’s, who present eco- or biocentric views. However, identity based on
the relation between man and hi or her environment does not always underlie a deeper reflection,
spirituality, or conscious axiological system. Aside from the signs, expressed for example in the
activity of ecological movements, or lifestyles embedded in deep relation with nature, the article
also provides patterns of behavior of consumers who are responsible for modern, enthusiastic
trend to be attracted by all that is natural, while, at the same time, bearing signs of ephemerid
and transience. Expressions of ecological identity can thus be found on different levels of activity
both of individuals, as well as social groups. Their form and content may be regarded as an interesting
source of sociological reflection
Polityczne implikacje aliansów feminizmu i ekologii
Szczególne miejsce zostanie przyznane polskiej partii Zielonych 2004. [fragm.
Świadomość ekologiczna i jej badanie.
Primary central nervous system lymphoma in immunocompetent patients
Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare malignancy, exclusively arising in central nervous system (CNS) and in the intraocular compartment, accounting for 4% of all intracranial tumors. Recently, the incidence of PCNSL is progressively increasing in immunocompetent patients and in the elderly age group. CNS involvement and diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) histology in 95% of cases are responsible for an aggressive clinical course of this malignancy. Particular microenvironment and blood-brain barrier (BBB) strongly affect therapeutic approach. Namely R-CHOP regimen being a standard treatment in systemic DLBCL is not sufficient in PCNSL because of its poor ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Therefore, chemotherapy incorporating high-dose methotrexate, able to cross BBB and radiotherapy are the backbone of CNS lymphoma treatment. Although this combined modality has improved outcomes regarding radiotherapy alone, it can induce severe neurotoxicity (radiotherapy being the main cause), particularly in patients older than 60 years. Therefore, recent studies have addressed the question how to optimize chemotherapy in order to avoid up-front radiotherapy without worsening the results. High-dose chemotherapy together with autologous stem cell transplantation is another treatment option for younger patients, whereas the blood-brain barrier disruption (BBBD) followed by intra-arterial chemotherapy is regarded as an experimental modality
Erectile dysfunction in diabetes patients
WSTĘP. Zaburzenia erekcji są jednym z późnych powikłań
cukrzycy, a mechanizm powstawania tych
i szerszego poznania problemu.
MATERIAŁ I METODY. W Katedrze i Zakładzie Balneologii
i Medycyny Fizykalnej przeprowadzono badania
ankietowe dotyczące życia intymnego mężczyzn.
Retrospektywna anonimowa ankieta składała się
z wywiadu oraz 5 pytań dotyczących jakości sfery
intymnej. Badania trwały od lipca 2006 do sierpnia
2009 roku. Przebadano łącznie 205 pacjentów, w tym
115 mężczyzn chorych na cukrzycę i 90 pacjentów
bez zaburzeń gospodarki wodorowęglanowej.
WYNIKI
1. Spośród chorych na cukrzycę 5,2% ocenia bardzo
wysoko możliwość osiągnięcia erekcji (14,4%
w grupie kontrolnej).
2. Jedynie u 22,7% chorych na cukrzycę prawie zawsze
wystąpiła erekcja (48,9% w grupie kontrolnej).
3. Aż 10,4% chorych na cukrzycę prawie nigdy nie
utrzymało erekcji podczas stosunku płciowego.
4. Zadowolenie z życia intymnego występuje tylko
u 43,5% chorych (71,1% w grupie kontrolnej).
WNIOSKI
1. Chorych na cukrzycę należy objąć właściwym
postępowaniem balneofizjoterapeutyczno-psychologicznym,
uwzględniając możliwości leczenia
sanatoryjnego.
2. Pacjentów zmagających się z impotencją warto
poddać zabiegom, które wpływają na czynne
przekrwienie miednicy mniejszej. (Diabet. Prakt.
2010; 11, 6: 216–220)BACKGROUND. Erecticle dysfunctions are one of the
last diabetes complication. The mechanism of this
problem is very composite. It mostly occurs as a result
of accumulation of many factors. The problem
induced us to deepen this matter and to gain broader
knowledge about that. Erectile dysfunction is one
of the late complications of diabetes, and the
mechanism of these disorders is very complex.
Frequently they result from the cumulation of many
factors. This is a problem that has prompted us to
explore this subject and a wider understanding of
the problem.
MATERIAL AND METHODS. In the Department of
Balneology and Physical Medicine there were
conducted surveys on men’s intimate life. A retrospective
anonymous questionnaire consisted of
interviews and five questions on the quantity and
quality of the intimate sphere. The studies lasted
from July 2006 to August 2009. We examined a total
of 205 patients, including 115 men with diabetes
and 90 patients without disturbances of bicarbonate.RESULTS
1. 5.2% of diabetic patients estimate it at very high
level the potential to achieve an erection (14.4%
in the control group).
2. Only 22.7% of patients with diabetes had nearly
always erection (48.9% in the control group).
3. As many as 10.4% of diabetic patients almost
never maintained an erection during sexual
intercourse.
4. Satisfaction with intimate life only occurs in 43.5%
of patients (71.1% in the control group). (Diabet.

The Major Heat Shock Proteins, Hsp70 and Hsp90, in 2-Methoxyestradiol-Mediated Osteosarcoma Cell Death Model
2-Methoxyestradiol is one of the natural 17β-estradiol derivatives and a potential novel anticancer agent currently being under evaluation in advanced phases of clinical trials. However, the mechanism of anticancer action of 2-methoxyestradiol has not been yet fully established. In our previous studies we have demonstrated that 2-methoxyestradiol selectively induces the expression and nuclear translocation of neuronal nitric oxide synthase in osteosarcoma 143B cells. Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are factors involved in the regulation of expression and activity of nitric oxide synthases. Herein, we chose osteosarcoma cell lines differed in metastatic potential, metastatic 143B and highly metastatic MG63.2 cells, in order to further investigate the anticancer mechanism of 2-methoxyestradiol. The current study aimed to determine the role of major heat shock proteins, Hsp90 and Hsp70 in 2-methoxyestradiol-induced osteosarcoma cell death. We focused on the implication of Hsp90 and Hsp70 in control under expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase, localization of the enzyme, and further generation of nitro-oxidative stress. To give the insight into the role of Hsp90 in regulation of anticancer efficacy of 2-methoxyestradiol, we used geldanamycin as a potent Hsp90 inhibitor. Herein, we evidenced that inhibition of Hsp90 controls the protein expression of 2-methoxyestradiol-induced neuronal nitric oxide synthase and inhibits enzyme nuclear translocation. We propose that decreased level of neuronal nitric oxide synthase protein after a combined treatment with 2-methoxyestradiol and geldanamycin is directly associated with the accompanying upregulation of Hsp70 and downregulation of Hsp90. This interaction resulted in abrogation of anticancer efficacy of 2-methoxyestradiol by geldanamycin
