Temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the conductivity of YBaCuO films in the vicinity of superconducting transition: Effect of Tc-inhomogeneity
Temperature and magnetic field dependences of the conductivity of YBaCuO
films in the transition region are analyzed taking into account spatial
inhomogeneity in transition temperature, Tc.
(i) An expression for the superconducting contribution to conductivity,
\sigma_s(T,H,Tc), of a homogeneous superconductor for H<<Hc2(T=0) is obtained
using the solution of the Ginzburg-Landau equation in form of perturbation
expansions [S.Ullah, A.T.Dorsey, PRB 44, 262 (1991)].
(ii) The error in \sigma_s(T,H,Tc) occurring due to the presence of
Tc-inhomogeneity is calculated and plotted on an H-T plane diagram. These
calculations use an effective medium approximation and a Gaussian distribution
of Tc.
(iii) Measuring the temperature dependences of a voltage, induced by a
focused electron beam, we determine spatial distributions of the critical
temperature for YBaCuO microbridges with a 2 micron resolution. A typical
Tc-distribution dispersion is found to be approximately 1K. For such
dispersion, error in \sigma_s(T,H,Tc) due to Tc-inhomogeneity exceeds 30% for
magnetic fields H < 1 T and temperatures |T-Tc| < 0.5 K.
(iv) Experimental R(T,H) dependences of resistance are well described by a
numerical solution of a set of Kirchoff equations for the resistor network
based on the measured spatial distributions of Tc and the expression for

Theory of Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy of Magnetic-Field-Induced Discrete Nodal States in a D-Wave Superconductor
In the presence of an external magnetic field, the low lying elementary
excitations of a d-wave superconductor have quantized energy and their momenta
are locked near the node direction. It is argued that these discrete states can
most likely be detected by a local probe, such as a scanning tunneling
microscope. The low temperature local tunneling conductance on the Wigner-Seitz
cell boundaries of the vortex lattice is predicted to show peaks spaced as . The peak is anomalous, and it is present only
if the superconducting order parameter changes sign at certain points on the
Fermi surface. Away from the cell boundary, where the superfluid velocity is
nonzero, each peak splits, in general, into four peaks, corresponding to the

Environmental drivers of distribution and reef development of the Mediterranean coral Cladocora caespitosa
Cladocora caespitosa is the only Mediterranean scleractinian similar to tropical reef-building corals. While this species is part of the recent fossil history of the Mediterranean Sea, it is currently considered endangered due to its decline during the last decades. Environmental factors affecting the distribution and persistence of extensive bank reefs of this endemic species across its whole geographic range are poorly understood. In this study, we examined the environmental response of C. caespitosa and its main types of assemblages using ecological niche modeling and ordination analysis. We also predicted other suitable areas for the occurrence of the species and assessed the conservation effectiveness of Mediterranean marine protected areas (MPAs) for this coral. We found that phosphate concentration and wave height were factors affecting both the occurrence of this versatile species and the distribution of its extensive bioconstructions in the Mediterranean Sea. A set of factors (diffuse attenuation coefficient, calcite and nitrate concentrations, mean wave height, sea surface temperature, and shape of the coast) likely act as environmental barriers preventing the species from expansion to the Atlantic Ocean and the Black Sea. Uncertainties in our large-scale statistical results and departures from previous physiological and ecological studies are also discussed under an integrative perspective. This study reveals that Mediterranean MPAs encompass eight of the ten banks and 16 of the 21 beds of C. caespitosa. Global unmet needs in cardiac surgery
More than 6 billion people live outside industrialized countries and have insufficient access to cardiac surgery. Given the recently confirmed high prevailing mortality for rheumatic heart disease in many of these countries together with increasing numbers of patients needing interventions for lifestyle diseases due to an accelerating epidemiological transition, a significant need for cardiac surgery could be assumed. Yet, need estimates were largely based on extrapolated screening studies while true service levels remained unknown. A multi-author effort representing 16 high-, middle-, and low-income countries was undertaken to narrow the need assessment for cardiac surgery including rheumatic and lifestyle cardiac diseases as well as congenital heart disease on the basis of existing data deduction. Actual levels of cardiac surgery were determined in each of these countries on the basis of questionnaires, national databases, or annual reports of national societies. Need estimates range from 200 operations per million in low-income countries that are nonendemic for rheumatic heart disease to >1,000 operations per million in high-income countries representing the end of the epidemiological transition. Actually provided levels of cardiac surgery range from 0.5 per million in the assessed low- and lower-middle income countries (average 107 ± 113 per million; representing a population of 1.6 billion) to 500 in the upper-middle-income countries (average 270 ± 163 per million representing a population of 1.9 billion). By combining need estimates with the assessment of de facto provided levels of cardiac surgery, it emerged that a significant degree of underdelivery of often lifesaving open heart surgery does not only prevail in low-income countries but is also disturbingly high in middle-income countries

Islands beneath islands: phylogeography of a groundwater amphipod crustacean in the Balearic archipelago
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Metacrangonyctidae (Amphipoda, Crustacea) is an enigmatic continental subterranean water family of marine origin (thalassoid). One of the species in the genus, <it>Metacrangonyx longipes</it>, is endemic to the Balearic islands of Mallorca and Menorca (W Mediterranean). It has been suggested that the origin and distribution of thalassoid crustaceans could be explained by one of two alternative hypotheses: (1) active colonization of inland freshwater aquifers by a marine ancestor, followed by an adaptative shift; or (2) passive colonization by stranding of ancestral marine populations in coastal aquifers during marine regressions. A comparison of phylogenies, phylogeographic patterns and age estimations of clades should discriminate in favour of one of these two proposals.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Phylogenetic relationships within <it>M. longipes </it>based on three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and one nuclear marker revealed five genetically divergent and geographically structured clades. Analyses of cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (<it>cox1</it>) mtDNA data showed the occurrence of a high geographic population subdivision in both islands, with current gene flow occurring exclusively between sites located in close proximity. Molecular-clock estimations dated the origin of <it>M. longipes </it>previous to about 6 Ma, whereas major cladogenetic events within the species took place between 4.2 and 2.0 Ma.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>M. longipes </it>displayed a surprisingly old and highly fragmented population structure, with major episodes of cladogenesis within the species roughly correlating with some of the major marine transgression-regression episodes that affected the region during the last 6 Ma. Eustatic changes (vicariant events) -not active range expansion of marine littoral ancestors colonizing desalinated habitats-explain the phylogeographic pattern observed in <it>M. longipes</it>.</p
Expansion and subfunctionalisation of flavonoid 3',5'-hydroxylases in the grapevine lineage
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Flavonoid 3',5'-hydroxylases (F3'5'Hs) and flavonoid 3'-hydroxylases (F3'Hs) competitively control the synthesis of delphinidin and cyanidin, the precursors of blue and red anthocyanins. In most plants, <it>F3'5'H </it>genes are present in low-copy number, but in grapevine they are highly redundant.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The first increase in <it>F3'5'H </it>copy number occurred in the progenitor of the eudicot clade at the time of the γ triplication. Further proliferation of <it>F3'5'H</it>s has occurred in one of the paleologous loci after the separation of Vitaceae from other eurosids, giving rise to 15 paralogues within 650 kb. Twelve reside in 9 tandem blocks of ~35-55 kb that share 91-99% identity. The second paleologous <it>F3'5'H </it>has been maintained as an orphan gene in grapevines, and lacks orthologues in other plants. Duplicate <it>F3'5'H</it>s have spatially and temporally partitioned expression profiles in grapevine. The orphan <it>F3'5'H </it>copy is highly expressed in vegetative organs. More recent duplicate <it>F3'5'H</it>s are predominately expressed in berry skins. They differ only slightly in the coding region, but are distinguished in the structure of the promoter. Differences in <it>cis</it>-regulatory sequences of promoter regions are paralleled by temporal specialisation of gene transcription during fruit ripening. Variation in anthocyanin profiles consistently reflects changes in the <it>F3'5'H </it>mRNA pool across different cultivars. More <it>F3'5'H </it>copies are expressed at high levels in grapevine varieties with 93-94% of 3'5'-OH anthocyanins. In grapevines depleted in 3'5'-OH anthocyanins (15-45%), fewer <it>F3'5'H </it>copies are transcribed, and at lower levels. Conversely, only two copies of the gene encoding the competing F3'H enzyme are present in the grape genome; one copy is expressed in both vegetative and reproductive organs at comparable levels among cultivars, while the other is transcriptionally silent.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results suggest that expansion and subfunctionalisation of <it>F3'5'H</it>s have increased the complexity and diversification of the fruit colour phenotype among red grape varieties.</p
Electronic beam shifts in monolayer graphene superlattice
Electronic analogue of generalized Goos-H\"{a}nchen shifts is investigated in
the monolayer graphene superlattice with one-dimensional periodic potentials of
square barriers. It is found that the lateral shifts for the electron beam
transmitted through the monolayer graphene superlattice can be negative as well
as positive near the band edges of zero- gap, which are different from
those near the band edges of Bragg gap. These negative and positive beam shifts
have close relation to the Dirac point. When the condition () is satisfied, the beam shifts can be controlled from
negative to positive when the incident energy is above the Dirac point, and
vice versa. In addition, the beam shifts can be greatly enhanced by the defect
mode inside the zero- gap. These intriguing phenomena can be verified
in a relatively simple optical setup, and have potential applications in the

Courting the South: Lula’s Trade Diplomacy
Scholarly consensus regarding Brazil's Lula government characterizes its economic policy as surprisingly conservative but its foreign policy as roughly in line with the traditionally leftist principles of the Workers' Party. While broadly accurate, this perspective tells us little about trade diplomacy, which cuts across these two policy areas. In this article we explain why Lula's trade diplomacy has hewed much more closely to his broader foreign policy strategy than his economic model, despite the critical role of trade in Brazil's recent economic growth. We argue that two key factors have lowered the costs of adopting a combative, South-South orientation, allowing Lula to use trade diplomacy as a tool for appealing to party loyalists. One is the inherently muted short-term impact of trade diplomacy on key macro-economic outcomes. The other is the failure of the traditional trading powers to offer the incentives necessary to successfully conclude the major North-South trade talks they had initiated
